I recently watched the Chinese Virtual Grand Prix, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. There were definitely issues. Lando got disconnected again (and after 3 disconnections, I have to start to question Lando's end of the connection) as did (I think) Giovinazzi later on. But from a spectator standpoint, it was enjoyable - especially with no real F1 going on. And in the end, it's the fans who make - or break - any sport. So what does a racing game need to be eSports worthy? (Note: this is my opinion based on 2 decades of racing sims and an insane amount of watching F1) 1. It has to work well. The game itself must be solid and stable. Frame rate drops, connection burps, etc - anything that directly affects game play - are unacceptable. If the game stutters for one player, and it costs that player any time, it can not be considered ready for any form of serious competition. It would be like having a running race, but one of the runners will have banana peels thrown at them during the race. 2. It has to be enjoyable to watch. The commentators play a large role in that, but on-screen graphics need to be representative of real life. Being able to do replays of particular parts of the race - during the race. Having race information appear on screen as it normally would - timing tree, investigations by the Stewards, penalties awarded, basically make it look like an F1 race broadcast. Simple. Right? 🙂 3. It has to be realistic. This is probably the most controversial topic regarding this entire franchise. Is it realistic? Currently, based on the feedback in this forum and from other players, no. There are too many issues with the car to consider the game "accurate or true to life" per the definition of "realistic." But setting aside Webster for a moment, what does "realistic" mean to the player? If the player feels that the car behaves in the game the way they would expect it to in real life, then that is realistic. If you get onto the grass, expect less traction - but it needs to be like hitting real grass. If you graze a curb on a high speed corner at 200 mph with 1300 kgs of downforce, you shouldn't suddenly lose all traction and go into a forever-slide as if your tires have turned to molten rubber. (Or does that really happen to an F1 car? I've never driven a real one, unfortunately.) In this case, trying to model an F1 car - the most technologically advanced racing car on the planet - would require some extraordinary coding. My friend created the entire physics engine behind "Bass Pro Fisherman." That's a lot easier to simulate than all the workings of an F1 car, and even it was a rather complicated affair. But how complicated do you need to get? (Remember: uber realistic = complicated = expensive) Does the car need to have fully modelled tires, brake rotors, and every tiny bit of the barge boards, wings, etc? If you want to create a perfect simulator - and consequently charge thousands of dollars for it - then yes, go ahead and model the heck out of it. Make every surface as perfect as possible. Recalculate the loads on every point as many times per second as possible. And the vast majority of gamers wouldn't even notice. Heck, I would say a large number of the players of this game probably don't even have a driver's license, let alone driven at breakneck speed down a mountain road in a beat up Ford Courier that wasn't even fit for a parking lot. (fun story) However, despite the lack of "valid opinion about driving realism" they do buy video games. Lots of video games. And to them, the game is probably good enough. So, from a company stand-point, F1 2019 is wonderful. It sells in large numbers and most players enjoy the game. But to an eSports driver? Based on the feedback from hardcore fans in this forum, and out in the press, there's too much "video game" in the game, and although it's close to realistic most of the time, there are definitely areas that need to be addressed. Opinion: No professional driver should ever have to "learn to game the game" in order to be a successful eSport Race Driver. In other words, they should not have to learn the exceptions that would cause the car to slide or spin, or the "cheats" that allow you to get a faster time because the game "doesn't notice" (like being able to cut certain corners more than normal). The game should be close enough to reality that a pro driver can play and not feel like it's "a game." However, opinions aside, this IS E-sports we're discussing here. And by definition, they ARE games. So how to proceed? Codies is set on making this an eSports game. I think that's fantastic. But to me, the game isn't ready. There are too many issues with the car and the environment that are too far from "true driving." A curb that is ultra-slippery and causes an immediate slide - which itself goes on forever - is not realistic. However, on a positive note, I do believe the game is very close. If Codies can iron out the things that are still plaguing the driving - car handling, curb issues, etc - then I think they'll be in good shape. The casual gamer would still love it. Codies would sell lots of copies and stay in business. Yay! The hardcore racers would love it because it would be a realistic experience. Yay! The experience of driving an F1 car would be as close as virtually possible - short of creating a full simulator. So, in summary: If Codies insists on making the F1 franchise an eSport, the car needs to respond in the game as it would in real life. As perfectly as possible. Otherwise, you're asking Pro Drivers to "game the game" in order to win. It doesn't matter how that accuracy is accomplished - modelling of every part of the car and track, or just really good code that relates the car to the track and feeds that back to the driver. As long as it's 100% accurate (or as close as possible) then the end result is a great driving experience. And if you actually read all the way to here, thanks!

I was tinkering about with the camera settings (I normally play in T-Cam) and went "Hey, if I turn the angle settings way up, the cockpit camera looks real cool with the driver turning his head in the corners", so I captured that too and sent it to the video guys. 🙂

@BarryBL This should be the engine sound benchmark, a simple assetto corsa mod got the real sound so right the whines, rumbles pops, correct rev sound etc.....

Hi everyone, Another Thursday, and another something from us to whet your appetite for F1® 2020. Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing car and Circuit Zandvoort. A match made in heaven, and now here for you to check out in all its virtual glory for your first look at F1® 2020! The Dutch Grand Prix™ was due to take place this weekend, and whilst the real-life action on Zandvoort has been postponed, we’ve got a treat for you. Circuit Zandvoort is a unique circuit, with those steep banks, and, of course, that final corner. It’s a track steeped (if you’ll pardon our pun) in history, becoming an official part of the F1® calendar in 1952, and holding grands prix until 1985. 2020 is the year it makes its hugely anticipated return, and we can’t wait to race on it virtually, before the real-life cars do. “The team has done an incredible job in recreating every aspect of the circuit. The banked final corner heading into the long straight is something players are going to enjoy,” said Lee Mather, F1® Franchise Game Director here at Codies. “Circuit Zandvoort is highly technical with height variation, blind crests and unsighted braking points and corner apexes. It’s an onslaught on the senses and doesn’t give players a moment to rest.” We hope you enjoy the first-look at F1® 2020 in action. Zandvoort will be the first track on next season's Forum Championship for sure 🏎️ 🏁

Sorry, I looked for a sticky for this but couldn't find it. Also, I used search to see if this had been requested but again, nothing. I'd REALLY REALLY love to see the game show track sectors. Like, I'm in career mode, looking at lap times for other drivers, comparing my sector times to theirs but I have to Alt tab out of the game to go download a picture of the track's sectors. Seems REALLY easy to do and I just don't get how this was overlooked. Thanks!

I don't see how you can say that F1 games are as hard as some other titles. On rF2 I have to do 200 to 500 laps of practice in order to be able to control the car and do laps around a second slower than the leader. On F1 games I can just turn up and drive around with no worries about losing control and etc. Not the best example, but this is the one I have available. This mistake in a race a long time ago: It was significantly harder to stay in control of that car in rF2 and that single mistake cost me a pit stop as the tires were completely ruined as I was trying to not hit the wall. https://streamable.com/op3rn The most that could've happened in F1 games is probably that I'd just understeer and cut the corner. What makes other games harder than F1 games is that they're more unforgiving which harms being consistent and fast (which were what you considered to be hard)

If they want to stay in business, they need to keep selling the game. That means appealing to the wide audience. But if they want F1 to be an eSport, they need to fix the "unreality" of the driving experience. As you say, no racing game should be harder or easier to race in. Adding assists to help new or weak players is fine, as that helps with sales and creates a wider audience. But the driving in the game needs to be as close to real driving as possible.

I'm happy to take advice on the calibration as admittedly I haven't driven as much F1 2020 as I have DiRT Rally 2.0. If anyone has or knows of good settings, pass them on. 🙂 I use a Fanatec CSL Elite Base, CSL Elite Pedals with LC, and a ClubSport Formula V2 rim. All assists off. I used the "Increased Downforce" preset for this one (1 up from default), with some minor tweaks like lowering the differential (both accel and decel) and such. The only F1 2020 parts I work on are marketing/social asset creation, so I can't speak for anything developer-related, sorry.

Yay, it's finally out 🙂 I got to help out the F1 team by driving the laps for this video, then passed the capture onto the video team who did what they do best 😎 Some tips for when you all get to drive it yourselves in July: The thing I felt most when driving the circuit was the elevation change. The circuit leaps and dips in places you wouldn’t expect from an aerial view, making for a real good driving experience. The banking is the standout feature of the circuit and really needs to be experienced. Words and video are one thing but driving the two banked turns is another. Turn 3 (the banked hairpin at Hugenholtzbocht) will make or break your lap. It’s important to get the right line through Turn 2, brake early and turn in early, as it’s very easy to drift wide on the exit, especially if you’re using a steering wheel. Turn 7 is much like Pouhon at Spa, a fearsome high speed downhill section. With the right setup it may even be flat-out, but on my runs I was lifting slightly and shifting down to 7th gear. Turn 13 is the most amazing turn of the entire course, a steeply-banked turn unlike anything else on the calendar. Get it right and you’ll slighot out onto the main straight. It may take a while to get the hang of this circuit, so when you get your hands on F1 2020 I highly advise you load up a Free Practice session and do the Track Acclimatisation programme a few times. For those curious, driven on a Fanatec CSL Elite base, Formula V2 rim, and all assists off. Took about 20 laps to learn the layout and get a somewhat decent lap in.

sorry codemasters... this is the wrong way... which kind of customers do you want to make happy? babies? little children? customers who like to play F1 in style like need for speed? you still ignore the racing fans... the F1 lovers... the loyal customers who are racing for many seasons and enjoy league racing... no improvement on more realistic handling? or on realism itself like the original f1 hud (for strategy important), tyre wear, damage, mechanic failures, etc...? Codemasters are working for the wrong part of the customers - sorry but when i hear this, i am so disappointed - one more game for racing kids and not for lovers of this genre and realism... i think there could only be one reason for this decicions - money - because when this game is easy as for babies, all the kids will buy it!

Those that preordered are part of the problem as to why general release quality of today's games are so poor and bacause of that, anyone who does sell their soul for a few exclusive trinkets or 'hey, look at me, I'm playing the game three days before you' levels of status has zero sympathy from me. My feeling is that the sooner the ability to preorder (or rather, pay the full balance of a game up front) is removed from console storefronts the better it will be for everyone concerned.

Hey guys, I didn't find a wishlist thread discussing only about stages and locations. So I want to know your opinion, if you could choose 6 new locations for DiRT Rally 3, which ones would you choose and why? In my opinion the most important thing is to increase the number of stages in the current locations, adding stages in different areas of each country to have more variety in the environments. If we have that, I’ll be happy with just these four new locations: Ireland: I don't know why, but I love these narrow stages with that grass growing in the middle of the road. Indonesia: mud, narrow bridges, villages, palm forests, and it's a very nostalgic location for those who played rally games in the late 90s and early 2000s. Corsica: just because we need more tarmac stages and Corsica is classic. Kenya: I don't think I need to explain.

Iracing is no harder than f1 or any racing game, why are people going on about how hard racing games are, they aren't, you accelerate, you steer, you brake, simple. The hard thing is. To be consistent and fast, and that's the learning curve. Which you have to already do on f1 games, sooooo, why are they only making it easier and not not revising and adding as much depth to the simulation aspect. You said a broad audience, then contradict yourself, by implying f1 is easier. Why defend, we all know this is aimed at children, but it could be for the "hardcore" too. But it comes down to money, people think graphics guys are well paid, you wait to you hear what the physics/ coding guys earn. It would cut the profit margin in codes eyes, they don't see the long run, just the short term cash grab

Please, I have been a supporter of the series since the first one, who knew the launch would be such a shambles. Also this was the first game I have ever pre-ordered. Pre-ordering has little to do with the quality of this particular game..

That sounds like it should be easy. Get on it Codemasters!

Perfect mate! As long as you feel confident its good, you can push the car more and more 🙂 Make sure the brake bias isnt too far too the front. At some tracks you will lock up the rears and spin out haha. Let us know when you got in the 11's 😄

there have been bonus events that do not use DLC for many months (like, 8+). they used to be super rare, however, so I'm not surprised you didn't notice them (I estimate it was roughly one every 2 weeks). they are just more common now since it went on PS Plus, presumably to make the game a little more accessible to the many new players. getting lots of km into cars for engine upgrades and stuff is what career mode is for. if you don't want to do a whole championship, just do the events you like most and then abandon. it doesn't matter.

Because of great damage model. Every race was a high risk of spectacular crash. You simultaneously wanted it and tried to keep it clean. Now damage is reduced, it even doesnt affect handling (as far as I heard) so there is no tension during the race. It isn't alive anymore And it has disgusting environment
