Shakedown survey (+ how do I improve?)

Ah, well the suggestion is really only if you're a console player. It's the trick I used which gave me the single biggest improvement in times: using my TV zoom to simulate a Field-of-View adjustment. Sadly FoV is not available in software in the console versions. And DR2.0 has its default FoV quite wide, so objects distort at the sides of the picture, but worst of all, the road appears too damn small. But hey, it makes the game feel all awesome like Wipeout or something. If your TV allows it, you can use its zoom function to expand the image and basically re-create lowering the FoV. It's limited by the extent to which on-screen menu items become no longer visible. For me it's mainly the speedometer in the lower RH corner, but shifting the image as well as zooming allowed me to effectively lower the overall FoV to a really nice level that's a perfect overall balance. The other huge benefit is the game feels much more immersive to me, like I'm really in the car. It's something I've banged on a lot about on these forums, and a hat-tip to @A-M-A-R-85 for the work-around suggestion in the first place. As you're also playing on PC you've no doubt tried out the FoV adjustment slider on that platform!

It's true, PJ's tips videos are bona fide good stuff But I've got a tip you probably won't find elsewhere, if @EggBerry you happen to play on a console?

Shakedown survey (+ how do I improve?)

It's true, you really can enjoy this game without needing to come out on top. Coming in the top 16 should be a rewarding goal to set. And you will find improvements in your time come naturally, without even realising it sometimes. It's like playing a musical instrument, you often find yourself just getting better over time without pinpointing where exactly you made the upward jump. It's so much fun without having to be at the top anyway, because of the simulation nature of the game. That's why I love it so much, arcade games are meaningless without winning, whereas this game actually means something for every level of outcome.

I use them before basically every rally. They're enormously important, and go hand-in-hand with set-ups. If you're not paying real attention to set-ups, you're compromising your performance and enjoyment of DR. It becomes second-nature after a while and doesn't take very long to change your setups once you get the hang of the various elements. Shakedowns are your 'test your setup' time and are vital. Use them wisely but be careful not to smash your car in the process! In particular, use them to test for oversteer/understeer and fine-tune your setups so you are as nimble as possible.

Please remove the wheel punching animation

Need a rally gangsta game called Sainz Row Also kinda funny that DR2.0 gets complaints about the post race animation when the nearest alternative (cough cough WRC game) doesn't even have realistic hand animations for the actual race!

Recommend me a rally game for the XB360

The Xbox 360 allows you to play Richard Burns Rally. That is, the original Xbox game, which on the 360 is backwards compatible, and frame locked and so a smoother and better experience. You can't play it on the Xbox One. If you can't afford any other console, it's pretty amazing to have that to play as it's the greatest rally simulation you can get outside of DR2.0

    WRC 9

Except the control issue he identifies is with 9 And he says it's the same issue as 8 No way am I buying this. 8 was trash.

    WRC 9

Oh boy: https://medium.com/brit-gamer/wrc-9-versus-dirt-rally-2-0-on-controller-e21686b80b8c He's absolutely nailed the problems with WRC 8, especially with a controller. It's awful and exactly as he describes. I haven't tried 9, but this article has a ring of truth about it... That's the end of Kylotonn racing games for me. Next WRC game I purchase will be Codies first official title on the Xbox series X.

    WRC 9

@danielofifi Are you playing it on the PS4? If so, how's the frame-rate? Does it feel any smoother than last time? And has the collision detection improved, or do you still bump weirdly from trackside objects or walls? Have those physics improved do you think? I found the cars to react in strange ways sometimes, whereas in DR2.0 its nearly 100% believable.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Just an unrelated comment: Art of Rally is going to be a smash-hit. I can feel it. That bloke has nailed the zeitgeist with the looks of the thing and the handling based on real-life inertia and physics. And it will be a great thing for Codies, as it will bring in new fans to rally eager for the real-deal. More reason for DR3.0 to go full subtle, photographic, real-world lighting and colours in their approach. The colourful 'gamey' look is being done elsewhere, in Dirt 5 and AoR.

Dishing the DIRT - Two Teams, One Future

Great to hear in that 'Next-gen console tech' interview, the director of Dirt 5 placing such emphasis on high frame-rates. Sounds like they're going for 120fps locked on the new consoles. This was a brilliant decision - to prioritise FPS - going back to Dirt Rally 1. To think the official WRC game still plays only at 30fps on current consoles. It's a major advantage that Codies have set that standard.

So... are we getting closer to getting a date for when we might get some info on when we'd perhaps get a date for something new or perhaps just info on the next phase of the Dirt Rally series?

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

A much slower path to acquiring new cars, but with no car-upgrades (or at least keeping these to actual realistic equivalents) would be better, but with a greater choice of events at any one time, rather than just the one and only path forward through identikit career rally events on permanent repeat. Oh, and however its final format turns out: OFFLINE CAREER MODE PLEASE
  19. For example, how about keeping track of stats across all custom championships? Number of podium finishes, and stages won (sorted by AI difficulty), and other long-term data? So as to keep a sense of something more permanent and substantial in custom championships. The more 'career' style features that can be enabled (at the player's discretion) for custom championships, the better. Even potentially money, as a separate meter to what is earned in career. The GUI for custom championships is an absolute breeze to use, let's see that mode put to full use!

Should Drunk Rallying be a Thing?

So, I find that often when I've come home after sinking a decent number of pints, I'm somehow better at DR, at least for the first 30 mins or so, and then it goes downhill as the worst of both worlds collide, alcohol and inherent ineptitude. But initially, there is a cavalier power that takes over, and I'm easily breezing through sections I previously found tortuous. Perhaps its the over-riding of risk that the brain inadvertently factors in to virtual gaming. Or something. So anyway, why not allow real-life drunk rallying, all the way to WRC? There could even be different categories, based on blood alcohol level. .01-.05, .05-1, 1.5-2, over 2. Like the weight categories in boxing.

Should Drunk Rallying be a Thing?

Completely not serious, if that needed to be explained But silliness for a dead forum Here's some Art of Rally as a 'Hallucinogen Rallying' option instead, allowing @PJTierney to merge with that game's thread https://mobile.twitter.com/funselektor/status/1303452665041489920

Project CARS 3 banners in DiRT Rally 2.0

@PJTierney What does it do that PCARS 2 doesn't, once you tweaked the assists in 2 to make it arcadey? I couldn't see this in my very brief time playing it. Also the first track was so high-contrast my eyes actually genuinely felt real discomfort looking at it.

    Co-driver feedback

There may be a few sections that could do with improved calls... ... but Codies should get major accolades for the sheer quality of Phil Mill's recording overall. The way it's different in urgency at different speeds, and blends between both so seamlessly. Never in all my long career of playing rally games and being really bad at them, did I think the co-driver could be a source of such gaming enjoyment. Mill's voice is exquisite, and the DR team delivered it beautifully! Even his post-race comments are hilarious in their wooden-ness, but still great to hear because of his voice. Would be great to hear more incidental phrases from him in the next game, from compliments all the way to 'you're breaking the car'.

    Co-driver feedback

Still think the use of 'caution' is inadequate, there needs to be a few more of these over various rallies. Like the one in New Zealand where it does not take into account you are coming from a straight and the 3 left will send you flying off a hill if you don't slow right down. Otherwise I find it mostly OK, a few turns are perhaps 3s instead of 4s for example but these are the exceptions for me.
