DiRT Rally 2.0 - the car list at launch

Those cars are not released for another couple of weeks, I'd guess we're not not supposed to see it yet.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Oh I'm not saying it wasn't, I just don't remember. Also I should make it clear that I don't work for codies and don't know all details, only really what has been said publicly and in their dev diary videos etc. And yes @cmsoundfx is one of the audio guys that works on engine audio, busy guy for sure!

Hmm, not sure the DR sound was from the Datsun, but i know the sound you're referring to. You might be right, i don't recall, still, nice and 'cammy' 😄

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

I don't know full details, and i wonder if you're right on the injection conversion, i don't know - good info though. All i know is the 'correct car' was sourced and recorded. It does sound good, but i doubt many could tell how it compares based on what you're saying - the previous sound they had was from a more modern version of the escort, this one was one to be more period correct. I'll ask around.

    That's too old, pre '08.

Sorry dude, seems it didn't make it, should be in the next patch i'm guessing.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Yup, that's the physics link, everyone loved it in DR, and didn't know why.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Sorry, missed some posts here 😞 @RallyLover19 That is an incorrect statement, ALS pops/bangs are on all cars that should have it, though they're barely perceptible from in car, you need a rear camera view or replay. Go check out the cool unique ALS from the R5 C3. Nice rhythmic ALS. @bogani They have a few transmision whine types they use, but for recording purposes, it's not something that can be really recorded from all cars. Not all cars have the sound, and in a lot of cases, the original recordings don't even have the whine, whether the car should have it or not. I too liked the DR cockpit sound a little more, bit sometimes direction to the sound team changes, at least it's not D4 and at least we now have the sound sliders, i recommend putting the other sounds down a bit, leaving the engine up. @AleCruz97 Yeah, you'd think it'd be easier? Not unfortunately, the sound system has been linked to the physics engine since DR, that means that the sounds have to be able to be called by the engine. It's why you know from the sound alone that you're going up hill, over a bump, through a dip, slipping on ice etc. @Busterbvi I can't argue with your knowledge of what they should sound like, but i can tell you they request a genuine BDG engined car to record, and got it, recorded it, and that's what's in game.

It's a different diff whine in each car, though obviously some are repeated, try capturing that from engine audio recordings, has to be one of the most difficult things to capture and attach to the game, think about it.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Exactly what i said in the quote, the sound processing for the cabin effect is CPU intensive, consoles don't have the same power as the PC in that regard - remember the game's primary aim is 60fps, everything else is tailored around getting that.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Manta is getting a db tweak in next weeks patch. The 'balance' of sounds is a weird one, trust me, remember not hearing surface sounds as much until last patch? Yeah, that wasn't because they weren't loud enough, it was because the engine sounds were too loud, that's part of what someone mentioned earlier, some cars are too loud inside, on those you'll notice that surface sounds seem quieter too, it's not that they're quieter, it's the engine sound overpowering them. We do have sound sliders, they don't go to 11, but you can compensate, don't have them all at 100, drop them all down a few notches, whichever effect you want more of, leave at the top. Now some of this can/will change as the remaining cars get their engine audio put back into balance again. Examples of the cars with the incorrect engine balance are the Fabia WRC and the C4 WRC, the M1 Rallye and the Manta are at the correct level (Manta pending tweak next week) There are many others where the sound level is right, and some older ones, like the 6R4, that are still too loud (though i hate to turn that baby down 😉 )

    DiRTy Gossip

I'm in agreement, i think the remaining 4 RX tracks as part of seasons 2 and 3. There are only 3 more DR locations though, so two more in Season 2, one more in season 3, leaving another location for 3 we don't know of. Of course that leaves that last one, which is far enough out to be just speculation even on their part by now, could be classic Lydden? Could be a new stage location - as could the unknown from season 3...

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Ohh, i'm on PC. I know the PS has speed issues, it might just be the way the audio has to be on that system, the processing of the cabin audio is CPU intensive so you might not be hearing the exact same i'm hearing. The sound should indeed change, it should sound like it's reverberating around a small tinny space.

Oh i see what you're saying, however, you're looking at the location and the DLC number there. Germany, Sweden and Monte would all have the same DLC number, so yes you're right you're going to get these matching DLC listed items in the same DLC/season pass, but not likely at the same time. Having said all that, we're again looking at version number drops, what are we on now? 1.2.1 or something? That would fit with 1.3 being Sweden, 1.4 being Germany.....

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

No i don't work for Codies, i do chat with one of the sound devs though. I don't believe helmet audio is intentionally simulated, but i've never talked about that - i will say that internal audio is not muffled on my system - you're either experiencing a bug, a sound system setup issue, or using the wrong term to describe it. To me, the compressor effect used to simulate the cabin of a stripped out race car is accurate. Remember Phil's audio is coming through a headset, you just can't hear someone talking in the car.

Oh, the assumption is that we might get more? that's how i'd interpret what's being said here, you might get more locations per drop? I'm still not sure i understand, but i would also say that if this is steamdb stuff, they have to have placeholder version numbers in there anyway, however it is clear this is for locations for updates, so we should get a location per entry here.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Ahh, you're using a surround setup, ok. Oh, go check a rear engined car 🙂 Some cars engine audio is out of balance, it's too loud vs other sounds (it's being worked on), some speaker setups suffer more from this than others for example, even on the cars with (too) loud engine audio, i have zero issues understanding Phil. Cockpit shouldn't sound muffled, i wonder if in surround setup somethings different? try setting your system to stereo for as test. Rear cams shouldn't play anything from the rear speakers, there's nothing behind you...

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Alright, so in replays, tyre sounds on ice aren't always correct, but they are/should be on the actual play through. @FLAW3D the sounds recorded by other studios are for reference, and i think some sampled portions, but they are still composed in the studio. CM actually record the sounds in a specific way and then use the sounds directly. Whilst it's not technically correct to say they're not created, it's still pretty much the case, the sound the mic's heard is the sound getting played through the physics engine. It makes it a little harder to get things like gear change pops and other things in there like say dirt 3 had, but that's because they didn't have the sound engine tied to the physics engine back then, since DR, this is how it works, so the result of you lifting off, or causing the engine to bog down or when the tyres grip up or lose grip. In the quattro video, don't mistake the sound of transmission lash as other pings/rattles/bangs for the exhaust pops. Other than i think that car has it's exhaust existing right behind the front wheel, you're essentially not really picking up bangs from the exhaust in that video. See the MSport vid linked above for the example of what you'll hear in car, that thing popples and bangs big time on the overrun, but you don't hear anything in that onboard.

So unfortunately the audio you hear on most in-car stuff isn't totally accurate, it's a weird mix we've all become used to over time. In DR/2 you've got microphones sampled at various points in/around the car, the game engine mixes levels depending on where your camera/view is situated. What about the audio is it you're not feeling right now? (a lot of the sound in that video above is actually just distortion)

So let me ask this, in Argentina, are there drones flying above the stage, causing dust to be in the roadway? Because i see the dust, but no drones.

    FOV in Dirt Rally 2.0

Just in case anyone sees this, it's incorrect, we already know the values from CM, starting value (center) is 55.

    The unexpected moments stopped?

I haven't seen any of these on PC since one of the patches as well, hoping they found it and fixed for next weeks patch.
