DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Just had an idea to automatically catch 'some' of the trainers remaining. I imagine for optimal times some trainers are configured to play with the ideal inputs for the best time possible; I imagine that this might consist of digital and analouge inputs together and that would be a way to catch them. If for example the Steering degree jumps in some corners from 0 to 140 in an instant, but is held on exactly 70 in other corners you can rule out both: Keyboard and steering wheel players. Steering wheel inputs can always be aproximated as a differentiable function as you always have to turn the wheel to the point. Keyboard inputs are always digital (The game might modulate the ingame steering slowly for playability but the game still receives digital inputs from a keyboard.) So if you track and log the raw input data during play sessions, you might be able to filter out some results made by trainers via an algorithm analysing anomalies in the input-data-log. It won't catch all and I don't know if it's worth the effort, but just wanted to throw it in the room as inspiration.

You're missing the point of what a trainer is. The 'old' cheats you are talking of are nothing that any developer can realisticly detect via software. Those trainer-software emulates inputs into periphirals like keyboard and wheels. From the viewpoint of the game it has no way to tell apart if that throttle signal is actually coming from a pedal or is just generated by another program. Only defense against this is to manually or semi-automatically check if some times are way beyond what's humanly possible. Even with the most effort and money imaginable this is a problem that can not be fixed by software unless you write a whole new operating system. Because, a game, as any other program, is controlled by the OS and has no power over other programs running simultaneously.

Can somebody tell me if that is the higher roof scoop on the i20 or the one that's smoother to the car? Find it hard to distinguish from that angle

That doesn't look bad at all! I am not into RX at all, but I hope they decide to do some Rally stuff too! I think PC2 has somewhat more realisitc lighting than D4, just can't put my finger on the source. Maybe a mixture of reflections on metal and visible sunlight rays, but the difference isn't that big. Compared to D4, DiRT has a whole lot better particle effects (dirt) than PC2 though, which is a huge immersion part if you drive offroad. I'm not really exited for PC2, after how PC1 turned out. Promised features never came and although the physics were plausible, the FFB was utter BS... I never found a setup, that would work with my T300 and give me proper feedback from the front wheels, which made catching a slide a PITA, compared to DR, where I can hold a drift almost naturally, because the wheel properly feeds back how the wheels are turning and moving.

"most iconic" is highly subjective. (And probably dependent on age)  I don't find the Escort 'most iconic' at all... it's a often used car from that era but overall not more important than the Stratos or Quattro or Mini or RS200.  To me, the most iconic rally car would be the '99 Impreza, but it's subjective. "It's just like... your opinion, man." An excerpt from Graham Robson's great book on the RS1800.  Says it all really ! "Escort RS1800 (Escort Mk II) : This is a Rally Giant because it was consistently the fastest, the most successful and the most versatile car in the second half of the 1970s and early 80's. Developed from the Mk I, it was a conventional front engine/rear drive machine, which rallied with 2-litre engines of up to 270bhp. Rally successes were legendary - British (RAC), Safari, Acropolis, Finland (1000 Lakes), Sweden, Portugal, Canada - and more and more. They won 17 World Rallies between 1975 and 1981. RS1800s won the World Makes Championship in 1979, and were always close to victory, and always competitive. Escort drivers like Bjorn Waldegard (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981) won the World Drivers' Championships. Over the years hundreds - and this is no exaggeration hundreds of RS1800s were built for motor sport, and were the ideal car for almost any condition in the world because they were very powerful, but simple and rugged. The RS1800 was also the layout template which was copied by other manufacturers - for cars like the Talbot Sunbeam-Lotus, the Vauxhall Chevette HSR and the Nissan GTs of the late 1970s/early 1980s, which were really all Escort 'clones'. Ford claim, and they may be right, that RS1800s have won more rallies, at World, International and National level than any other car in the world." How right they are and its still winning rallies all over the world today. Codies should single out the RS1800 for special treatment and pay tribute to this "Rally Giant" and give us a proper works Group 4 RS1800.  And this is just the opinion of that author, which has no credibility to make a subjective topic objective. The many wins also says nothing about icony of something because it's still subjective. In my country the VW Golf is the most sold car, but that doesn't make it the objectively best car around to buy. It might be best for some, but certainly many people would also disagree. You could certainly bring more arguments, but essentially you would still end up saying something like: "Don't you see that blue is obviously the much more beautiful color than yellow? Open your eyes people, it clearly is!"

You could make photomode a free update later on together with DLC, similar to Cities Skylines DLC-releases.  So after launch, when you finished and released the VR Update, you could develop the Photomode in parallel with the Argentina-DLC and release both of them simultanously ;) ;)

I think this hasn't been asked before @KickUp : Will we, when creating a League in Racenet, get the same preview pictures of stages for generating them online? Is it even possible to set up events with newly generated stages on the fly or do you need to have saved stages on your account already to use them in leagues?

Our classes are entirely based on engine size and performance now Based on power per weight, the Ascona should've been in H2. it has jut 228 bhp/t, which is less than any of the H2 cars (the least powerfull there is the Fiat with 230 bhp/t).  And Stratos has 283 bhp/t. I didn't see the stats for all of the H3 cars, I think the Renault 5 Turbo might have more, but that would leave Stratos as the second most powerfull in its class P/t isn't everything. I would suppose @KickUp  meant performance in the way, how fast this car is in the game, time-wise. Since it was produced after those in H2, more modern tech (Tires, Suspension...) might make it faster despite the power-lack.  In any case, with the new Multi-Class Events it shouldn't matter much anyway?

Would rather see the '06 Subaru Impreza 'Hawkeye' WRC instead of the C4 in the 2000's class. But I'm already rather happy with the lineup, at least for the classes I'm probably driving most: Evo VI in GrpA,  WRX STI '15 in R4, i20 in R5 By the way, isn't the 2000's class TopTier then? Wern't those WRC's faster than current day R5? Or is R5 on a similar level? According to Wikipedia R5 is equal to WRC class, which I think is missing some significant facts, since it is clearly not. Anyway, it's probably really close between 2000's and R5

At least I get now a somewhat better discussion with at least someone. But the only thing you could contribute so far was flagging post you have no interest on or make stupid jokes from it which rather would be spam. I think you value your opinion here quite a bit above other opinions. Maybe you should get of your high horse, you lost your arguments justification a few pages back. Everybody got your point: 1. Camera choice shouldn't affect gameplay 2. Bumpers get wet 3. Therefore Bumpercam should get wet. And as many already told you: 1. The bumper doesn't get as wet as the Windscreen. The Fords in rallies aren't that deep so you plundge your bumper into it, because that would rip it of, water is heavy you know? It surely would get wet, yes, but not as much as the windscreen. 2. View has always had an impact on gameplay. Cockpit and Dash are always harder to drive, just because you have more 'car' and less 'outside' in your FOV. So you should by now maybe acknowledge that your wishes have been heard now and understood too, but also that your opinion is clearly in a minority and your feature is probably not on top of CM's priorities.

At the end you also see Wales in sunlight. Looks really... green and lush, good contrast to the normal muddy Wales. And some nice little detail in that Spain-Run: In that mini-canyon there where a bunch of big Rocks that fell onto the road being blocked of by some Attention-Tape and warning buoys, right at the outside of a corner.

Spain looks very nice. I prefer it over Germany as an asphalt location anyway, because it's more road-ish. Didn't expect spain to feel that diverse actually, with all those elevation changes, road junctions, villages, roadside cliffs/mini-canyons and stuff... looks promising. Only thing still missing would be some backroad sections (one lane and less good surface than the two lane good stuff) and then it would cover almost all areas of tarmac rally driving (except mixed) (IF YourStage holds up to all promises) Also Ibiza RX confirmed and WRX-Class has seven cars. So I'd assume it's the same roster form DR, Minus the Subaru and Plus the Focus and Ibiza

There's a saying in Poland: "devil dwells in the details" ;) Precisely, the immertion of which you speak will also be apreciable seen from a helicopter and see how you drove during the race ,. I think it's important to see his race with retreat and the driving that we did. I do not think it's a detail to have a helicopter view. Helicopter view for full replays is already confirmed. Thought your desire was mainly to see that chopper while driving? Don't know if that's really important though, especially since the car roster of D4 represents more of a national-level for rally driving and not really WRC. And you don't see helos at most national championships 637/5000 It is really complicated to add them, they put them well in WRC2001 PS2 with the noise of pals and vibration of the helicopter and automatic zoom of the cameraman on the car, on a console that dates from the year 2000 17 years old, and here I am told that it is a detail, is it going to serve on super powerful console? But when you play, I love seeing these helicopters and I think it is not that I like it gives more reality to the game. If you can add them, you have to add them if it's not complicated. To you developer to add them in the race !!!! :-) before the game comes out in June !! Just because something is possible on an old console doen't mean it as A easy or B fast to implement into whatever game you think of. Programming isn't like putting groceries in your shopping cart. You don't take Feature A,B,C from far done games and just throw them in some sort of software mixer and the result is those features combined. You have to tell the game specifically what you want every time again (in form of programming), only when the game engine is the same, some stuff can be carried over.  You are right, the hardware is no problem, neither is the doability of helicopters technically. The question is if it's worth the effort of the developers, which equals money and time to develop. That is why you set Priorities when developing new products. More is always possible, but not always reasonable to do. So it all comes down to what the market wants, in this case the players. If you are in the majority with wanting to see those choppers all the time for real, it would be wise to do the effort. If most players would see that as a nice gimmik but not really important it might be a wasted effort. I'm all for immerion, especially in a simulation racer, and chances are there are those helos already anyway (since they were visible in DR too), but if they aren't yet, I would like CM focus on developing something more important first for immersion, like VR for example.

I don't thin electric cars are the future... at least not with the inconvenience of batteries and the enviromental damage during battery-production (Li-Ion-Bats).  Fuel Cells, maybe, but it would require a new hydrogen supply network for everybody... No. Honestly I believe the long term solution would be to keep hydrocarbonides (fuel) as our energy storage but change production from fossil-extraction to growing, preferable in the form of algae instead of crops to save valuable fertile land for food. So, I think, at least until/if we can create compact nuclear-fusion cells for cars, the internal combustion engine will stay with us even if/when the fossil fuels run out. I have no fear of endurance-motorsport like rallies ever going all electric.

Are the car setups in D4 still resetting on location-change in league events with multiple locations, despite not setting a service park @KickUp ? And is it possible to set multi-class leagues? So like setting two eligible car classes for competition, but showing seperate leaderboards for both together with one overall standing? If not, might be a suggestion for the future, so you could create R5 and R4 Events with different standings for both classes while competing in the same event.

IF YourStage creates as much variety as I hope, I will most likely never return to DR with one exception of occasionally racing up that Peak of this Pike guy... Teuchter said: Hasn't the S2000 class transformed to R5? So we're getting basically the most modern form of S200

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

@KickUp Would it be (is it) possible to retain setups on location change in one event? Currently if you setup an event in a league consisting of more than one location, your car setup resets on location-swap, even if you didn't set a service park there. (Example: Stage 2 in Greece, Stage 3 in Germany, Car setup get's set to the default tarmac setup instead of taking the values from the Greece setup you just drove with) Would be really nice if it wouldn't do that, because it would allow to setup pseudo-mixed rallys in league events, where you'd have to drive on tarmac and gravel with one and the same setup for your car.

The cars people associate with R5 most (therefor arguably the most important) are: Fiesta, Fabia, i20  two of those are already confirmed now. Maybe the 208 is also important a little. But it actually seems the most likely. So I guess the Fabia is out, and maybe the i20 was still in the air by the time that statement was made.
