DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

@RyuMakkuro do you live in America?  cuz that sounds awfully familiar to the attitude most have here.  In the UK these small cars seem to be the norm, so I understand, but here with the wide open roads, it's a little different

I hope this will be fixed in the VR update, easy fix might be to hide the hands so no animation is needed for those, and just sync the wheel rotation. I played Project CARS yesterday with my rift, and being able to see some arms and hands doing the same thing as I'm doing does help a lot with the immersion, so I do hope codies have been able to get full steering animation into the game. @KickUp. mentioned in a twitchbshow long while back, that the game just can't support it.   With the lack of many character animation in the game outside of a few cameramen and crowd movements.  I think there was a lack of time to record them or game optimization reasons.   I have been asking for this now for years. besides now the steering I wish they where able to go back to CMR 3 character animations it would rally add to the atmosphere.  Even DiRT2 had some variety when you got close to the crowds.   I do understand there are always compromises and limitations, but it will continue to be on my wish list.   A little off subject,  they have almost nailed every check on my sound list before DR was announced, again "the sound of Gravel" is absolutely complete.

@RyuMakkuro tried your simple 208 setup on PP, it made the car absolutely awesome!  now. I can enjoy driving it finally, thanks

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

They're cars with very limited success in world rallying, whose name bear a remarkable resemblance to Sweden's word for "behold". While I did like the Octavia and Fabia a little bit, if I had to choose between Skodas and Porsches in Dirt Rally, I'd go with the Porsches any day. Can't go wrong with german engineering, and with a beautiful soundtrack to boot. Why not both? And Škodas are pretty German. While technically it's a Czech brand, they're basically a Volkswagen underneath a different body The only good thing to come out of Volkswagen was the Beetle... ;) Agreed. Up until the old New Beetles, those were too pretty in pink. The original ones were awesome. The new ones at least don't look as chickish. Just like Porsches, the only truly good VWs are air cooled with engines in the rear, that includes the BUS, Beetle, Kubelwagen (THING) and probably the 411 wagons.  The 411 is the only one that you cannot leave stock to look good, they are turds unless you mod them, then they are very very nice.

Some really nice pics there. What camera do you use? my son, it is not the camera but the photographer and location XD enough being a jerk, I use a 300mm and a 10-20 for wide shots on a Nikon D300S. And a decent location for once, helped too

So there is more new content than Pikes Peak stuff right? Gotta ge home and check it out. Improved hillclimb handling as stated right after that.  I'm going to assume these are minor, but I could be wrong

Hey I wasn't trying to create a debate (again) about which raindrops are better.  :) I was hoping to get some conversation going about EVO tech in DiRT and how much programming a dynamic environment cost as opposed to hand crafting it like we have now. Many of us are looking for a big rewrite of EGO but I have an idea that's not exactly going to happen.   However, I think there now is a demand for certain aspects and features to be addressed and updated. My top 2 are:. Stage length, and Camera system.

@RyuMakkuro ok, thanks!  I grasp most of that, and yes it it's excellent that Evo Stodios has joined CM, hope they are not COMPLETELY separate and they exchange tech.  Heck, with all of that tech, dump EGO and retrofit their engine to DiRT X.  yes easier said than done, but fun to say

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I think I can answer that easily. If the resources are down to the engine aka volumetric particles, lighting etc. then it's obviously better for the development time, however they are very heavy on computing resources right now, which is why you don't see them. That means to achieve a certain level of performance in a game you need to have artist that will create details that take a lot less computing power but take more time to place. End effect is very simple. The same shot can look from one camera angle incredibly, while from another like complete... poo.  As can be demonstrated with the last two pictures seen in this tweet: https://twitter.com/ForzaMotorsport/status/742399232741658624    I am looking at these screenshots and seeing SW Battlefront type of graphics (good).  Not sure how you can see other camera angles, not picking  more curious how you are finding this.  Care to point out?   So I understand stuff like pre-baked shadows, and I am sure I could find a lot more pre-baked if I know what I am looking for.  However are there racing games out there that are dynamic?  PCars?  You mentioned NFS what graphics/features are dynamic?   What could be improved in DiRT Rally, if it were only the graphics parts, are they at the edge of technology?  Visuals only, what could be improved with EGO engine?   Oh to answer my own question about sounds, it seems that they are pretty good in game.  Though not sure how dynamic they are,  DiRT Rally sound (engine?) takes a lot of Qs from physics and the cars engine.  Not really sure how many other racing games sounds are this dynamic, which I believe in this instance is the correct word.

This: https://youtu.be/bxL76Xr00uQ @soundfx Placeholder sounds? Or actual game? I find it a little exciting that its going to be finally released again on PC.  I don't mind a casual racer from time to time.  Hopefully it will have half decent physics, never played forza on PC since having a wheel, etc.  So will have to wait and see.   One other thought, maybe for @urgaffel  Which gives a better result, a great game engine to render a lot of environment features, or a great team of environmental artist to pull off incredible scenery from very few polys.  Is a better game engine allow for more flexibility to simulate an environment, or better to have a group of artist hand tweaking for variable occasions (weather/time of day/season). Maybe I can rephrase:  Programming an engine takes certain amount of resources (people/time), creating environments takes a certain amount of resources (people/time).  If the engine allows for artist to concentrate on other details that would normally need to be done by hand, is it better?  Or if there is less programming resources dedicated to the engine, and more for the artist to take care of manually, does the end result look better.  Resources are the constant, the amount of people dedicated to each side is the same. I may be answering my own question, or not making any sense, just wanted to get some conversation going again.

I don't think if they have made a commitment by now, they are proceeding onto the next title.  like I said before, I am fine with that, it will only mean that DR2 or D4 or whatever will only arrive sooner (maybe 18 months? probably overly optimistic)

I posted this somewhere (here?) not long ago, but Ill repeat it here (new record @tbtstt). Historic rally locations and events?  What I mean - Australia current, but the historic 'mine shaft' stage, etc.  I think this could be done elsewhere too?  I'm not real familiar with other locations, this one always pops up.  Events and places (Kenya) that are not run anymore. Just a random thought

You are, right. Let DR 2 follow lesser known rallies, and have Kylotonn follow WRC ;) Amateur rallies also needs love, and some of them are really pearls/diamonds.  Do I have to mention a minor American location?  You guys gotta hate me!  :)

ill add 2 things as a short wish list for content: 1)  carrying over locations from DR do other stages in the locations (I.e. Germany wine country). I would guess the assets are there and I would imagine the other areas of the locations where documented and photographed.   I would just guess these would be quicker than creating all new?  Not sure what takes longer Mesh/3D work or environment work. Add additional new non dlc locations too expand content even more. 2) Short and quickwish, more pronounced bump maps on terrain, at times the gravel just looks like a flat texture.

I thought so? The first #thatcar was the Sport Quattro and the second hash tagged car was the Peugeot 208?  (Not 100% sure on the above though, so I await correction!) Really intrigued to know what they have planned: is it just minor tweaks, or is there further content coming for the game?  I think @KickUp confirmed the second tag was for the 208, either here or in a tweet a while back.   As far as content?  I highly doubt it.  I think they are actively working on their next title and anything new will be there. As borded as I have gotten looking at the same scenery, DR is still the best out there and still enjoyable, but there is a lot of catching up to current tech/features of many new games that the current engine doesn't support.  Good news is Codies is hiring again, and hopefully they can fast track the next title with more help and resources.  After that I would like to see lots of DLC (like PCars/AC releases over or more than a year)

He probably signed a NDA. Well, he better. Those pacenotes won't read themselves. I would think it's more of a gentleman's agreement to not say anything public.   Luke has known Paul for quite awhile, maybe longer personally, than most of us gossipers.  It was probably off the record talk amongst friends anyhow, so Luke may be allowed to troll us, but won't give away anything. Maybe we'll get some info in the months ahead.  Codies is hiring a lot lately.  I have seen a few content related jobs for hire too.  So Im not sure how that relates directly with speed of delivery, but we know for sure there is some type of rally game coming out in the future.  I am going to guess it may be a little diverse like previous titles, though. Here is my gossip prediction.  The next rally title may boot rallycross in favor of some truck like rally raid content.  Grid would inherit the rallycross since it would probably go back to more circuit racing and rallycross being a circuit track, would mix some variety into the title.  Possibility from a marketing standpoint they would sell both titles to rally fans and the tarmac racing would add the mix for us. This maybe be the worst idea ever, but I will always buy Grid and Dirt titles as long as they exist.  I try to like F1 but it's just not my style.

It looks like its on water, actually.  Watching it literally makes me a bit nauseous.  Graphics look good, but the uneven track now makes the car float.  This is from 1 video where the drivers have never driven a real car, no a car game outside their phones.  Ugh, they are awful, at least make yourselves look respectable by editing out some of you mistakes.
