  1. @tbtstt

Autosport was fun, it had some career mode to it, that I liked.  I was just drooling for a DiRT Game at the time, I should go back and play it now.

However that wasnt really my point, not even about the EVO team, but GRID and Dirt share some of the same people, if there are resources taken from DiRT then that would delay the next one.

EVO will have there own thing going and I'm looking forward to it.

hope now you know what I ment.  :)

Well lads & lassies, anything new happening in my absence or is it same-ole-same-ole?

Same old, Kevin...  Other than a calm before the storm tweet, but but I think the storm is a long way off.  But don't call me a weatherman my predictions aren't that great.
Unless the storm was actually the VR update?
I assumed the storm was the VR update? I was actually a little underwhelmed as, although it's cool, the VR update doesn't excite me that much!

Fingers crossed the storm is actually something else more exciting!

VR update was great for those with it, but that was more of a light rain for the rest of us.  Since F1 is out in Aug 19 and they don't want to take away the buzz from that launch.  Realistically I don't see them making any sort of announcement before November.  If there is even an official announcement at all, maybe a screenshot or something really basic.

This also could get stalled by a EVO announcement.  I just hope there isn't a GRID bomb dropped, that will just suck resources from DiRT team.  I haven't been impressed by that series in a long while.

Here is hoping for a late 2017 release!

  3. WRC6 will be a nice diversion from DR now, just to see some new stages.

    Gossip related:

Something that I am going to harp on for a while, although gossip is great fun.  I would like to see Codies be a little more open, similar to F1.   Although F1 is a predictable yearly title, the next DiRT title could be announced quite far off from release, with some teaser "work in progress" screens now and then.

I think they are now beyond the secretive experimental stage of uncertainty like DR was, and could do this this time around.  At least tell us of some features to look forward to.  Maybe a bi-monthly blog as progress updates, leaving out and licensing info would be acceptable and leave room for much gossip.

Even a early announcement, confirming the next game and some obvious things like new locations, cars, disciplines would leave to much speculation, but give us somewhere to start.  JBL tortured us for about 18 months, it was fun, but with so little concrete facts it won't be as fun this time around.

Maybe this isn't @KickUp's style but I am just inpatient the older I get, I guess.

Also my therapist is getting quite tired of me talking about DR during our sessions, they say I am not progressing, and my invisible friend (@justbiglee) is something I need to let go of.  Besides the $$ that I am spending could be used for VR and a GTX1080. :(

Yeah, the drones in DR are your generic handmade quad or hexacopters. Better than the DJI's anyways, they'll be bigger and can carry a full camera, not some version of a GoPro type deal. Not that that the Phantoms are bad, my friend has one, but making your own has more options. Also at this point drones are becoming so popular I expected them in DR. Pretty slick little find though. Do you have a drone?
No, almost bought a phantom a couple years ago.  But I read an article about 'fly offs' where you lose communication with ANY radio controlled vehicle and it just keeps following the same command.  Like if the last input it had was north, then it keeps flying till it runs out of battery or it hits something (or someone!)  So losing a $500 drone + $300 gopro like that scared me off.  Besides most of the places that I would like to use it I would need permission, which is a pain, or it just isn't allowed.

For me its just not practical and the novelty would wear out quickly flying it around boring places.

  5. just to add SOMETHING to this dying thread   Its rare that I step into bookstore anymore, but I needed to get away from a long and ongoing house project for a bit.  So Drones have caught my interest and there is a mag some in the UK may be formiliar with, creatively called "Drones Magazine".

Then a name from the past caught my eye, Alex Harvey, former Codies employee.

    Here is excerpt

and now for some gossip, but from the past

Anyhow this is a brief inside look of what goes behind the scenes, and the developmet of DiRT Rally

Sorry on my phone, and having a hard time finding a direct link to the article.

  6. you said about the TARDIS, what next a smart car?  Maybe the lowest of low cars.

The old cars where fast, group b cars where pretty big in some ways, up till what 2009 when Subaru left?  I don't know, probably talking out my butt.

Lol, TARDIS - Yaris, maybe my autocorrect is a Dr Who fan

@RyuMakkuro do you live in America?  cuz that sounds awfully familiar to the attitude most have here.  In the UK these small cars seem to be the norm, so I understand, but here with the wide open roads, it's a little different
I live in the country where people copy everything from America... Poland.

I know Yaris is a norm, which is the issue. Polo R isn't a norm, Fiesta RS/ST isn't a norm, i20 isn't a norm, DS3 isn't a norm as well. Those are slightly/a lot more... interesting versions of cars for teachers effectively, while Yaris is a car made for teachers (or rather for people that earn that kind of money).

I would really like for the WRC cars to be more of the "cool club of hot hatches", rather than the smallest and cheapest you can get for money. Even if it's just a name.

Thats interesting, and funny!  I do agree about the cars, I wish they would grow a little, like you said about the TARDIS, what next a smart car?  Maybe the lowest of low cars.

The old cars where fast, group b cars where pretty big in some ways, up till what 2009 when Subaru left?  I don't know, probably talking out my butt.

On a more serious note, what makes me skeptical about VR in DR is the limited wheel animation that will kill the immersion instantly. The cockpits are also quite bland graphically.
I hope this will be fixed in the VR update, easy fix might be to hide the hands so no animation is needed for those, and just sync the wheel rotation.
I played Project CARS yesterday with my rift, and being able to see some arms and hands doing the same thing as I'm doing does help a lot with the immersion, so I do hope codies have been able to get full steering animation into the game.

@KickUp. mentioned in a twitchbshow long while back, that the game just can't support it.

With the lack of many character animation in the game outside of a few cameramen and crowd movements.  I think there was a lack of time to record them or game optimization reasons.

I have been asking for this now for years. besides now the steering I wish they where able to go back to CMR 3 character animations it would rally add to the atmosphere.  Even DiRT2 had some variety when you got close to the crowds.

I do understand there are always compromises and limitations, but it will continue to be on my wish list.

A little off subject,  they have almost nailed every check on my sound list before DR was announced, again "the sound of Gravel" is absolutely complete.

I don't even know what a Skoda is.
They're cars with very limited success in world rallying, whose name bear a remarkable resemblance to Sweden's word for "behold".

While I did like the Octavia and Fabia a little bit, if I had to choose between Skodas and Porsches in Dirt Rally, I'd go with the Porsches any day. Can't go wrong with german engineering, and with a beautiful soundtrack to boot.
Why not both? And Škodas are pretty German. While technically it's a Czech brand, they're basically a Volkswagen underneath a different body
The only good thing to come out of Volkswagen was the Beetle... ;)
Agreed. Up until the old New Beetles, those were too pretty in pink. The original ones were awesome. The new ones at least don't look as chickish.
Just like Porsches, the only truly good VWs are air cooled with engines in the rear, that includes the BUS, Beetle, Kubelwagen (THING) and probably the 411 wagons.  The 411 is the only one that you cannot leave stock to look good, they are turds unless you mod them, then they are very very nice.

  10. Here is some well worn gossip, AC just got the Porsche license...  is EA loosening their grips?  Is Porsche getting tired of EA... did Kunos just trade their souls to Ferry Porsche?

Enquiring minds want to know, this has been a WWGFD Special report... back to you, DiRT

In other news Subaru is renterinasdflkasja fWRC falsdfa after a long asdfaslkdfa'---  asdfasd  ..........

I know its not gossip, but just thought I would drop a few pix from this past Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally here in the US.  Turned out to be great weather.

Well I don't know how to show post pix from my Flickr page so just follow the link

    Flickr Page
Some really nice pics there. What camera do you use?
my son, it is not the camera but the photographer and location XD

    enough being a jerk, I use a 300mm and a 10-20 for wide shots on a Nikon D300S.

And a decent location for once, helped too

Now, on to the fun stuff - you may notice that the patch doesn’t just bring fixes, but some additions to the content on DiRT Rally... We’ll discuss these in closer detail in tomorrow’s Road Book – but to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, we’ve added the following content: [..]
So there is more new content than Pikes Peak stuff right? Gotta ge home and check it out.
Improved hillclimb handling as stated right after that.
I'm going to assume these are minor, but I could be wrong

  13. Hey I wasn't trying to create a debate (again) about which raindrops are better.  :)

I was hoping to get some conversation going about EVO tech in DiRT and how much programming a dynamic environment cost as opposed to hand crafting it like we have now.

Many of us are looking for a big rewrite of EGO but I have an idea that's not exactly going to happen.

However, I think there now is a demand for certain aspects and features to be addressed and updated. My top 2 are:. Stage length, and Camera system.

  14. @RyuMakkuro

ok, thanks!  I grasp most of that, and yes it it's excellent that Evo Stodios has joined CM, hope they are not COMPLETELY separate and they exchange tech.  Heck, with all of that tech, dump EGO and retrofit their engine to DiRT X.  yes easier said than done, but fun to say

Maybe I can rephrase:  Programming an engine takes certain amount of resources (people/time), creating environments takes a certain amount of resources (people/time).  If the engine allows for artist to concentrate on other details that would normally need to be done by hand, is it better?  Or if there is less programming resources dedicated to the engine, and more for the artist to take care of manually, does the end result look better.  Resources are the constant, the amount of people dedicated to each side is the same.

I may be answering my own question, or not making any sense, just wanted to get some conversation going again.
I think I can answer that easily. If the resources are down to the engine aka volumetric particles, lighting etc. then it's obviously better for the development time, however they are very heavy on computing resources right now, which is why you don't see them. That means to achieve a certain level of performance in a game you need to have artist that will create details that take a lot less computing power but take more time to place.

End effect is very simple. The same shot can look from one camera angle incredibly, while from another like complete... poo.  As can be demonstrated with the last two pictures seen in this tweet:
    https://twitter.com/ForzaMotorsport/status/742399232741658624

I am looking at these screenshots and seeing SW Battlefront type of graphics (good).  Not sure how you can see other camera angles, not picking  more curious how you are finding this.  Care to point out?

So I understand stuff like pre-baked shadows, and I am sure I could find a lot more pre-baked if I know what I am looking for.  However are there racing games out there that are dynamic?  PCars?  You mentioned NFS what graphics/features are dynamic?

What could be improved in DiRT Rally, if it were only the graphics parts, are they at the edge of technology?  Visuals only, what could be improved with EGO engine?

Oh to answer my own question about sounds, it seems that they are pretty good in game.  Though not sure how dynamic they are,  DiRT Rally sound (engine?) takes a lot of Qs from physics and the cars engine.  Not really sure how many other racing games sounds are this dynamic, which I believe in this instance is the correct word.

  16. This:

    https://youtu.be/bxL76Xr00uQ

@soundfx Placeholder sounds? Or actual game?

I find it a little exciting that its going to be finally released again on PC.  I don't mind a casual racer from time to time.  Hopefully it will have half decent physics, never played forza on PC since having a wheel, etc.  So will have to wait and see.

One other thought, maybe for @urgaffel

Which gives a better result, a great game engine to render a lot of environment features, or a great team of environmental artist to pull off incredible scenery from very few polys.  Is a better game engine allow for more flexibility to simulate an environment, or better to have a group of artist hand tweaking for variable occasions (weather/time of day/season).
