SLRE is a bad example, the quality of just about every aspect of that game is suspect. So the caliber of stages fits in well with the rest of the game. But, to say there's no middle ground between the SLRE stages and what's in DR is a bit crazy. It's like the people that think the current damage system is good because there's no way to implement proper soft body physics like in BeamNG. Either an all or nothing view, and I don't think that's right. If they were doing exact recreations of the stages, that might be one thing, but they're not. We can see that with Finland. So no, for me, I don't care if they don't get every single, tiny change in road camber correct or even included if it means more unique km. And again, I'd find it hard to believe the only way to achieve that is going to a SLRE level of detail (with the current team/budget).
I'm not saying there is no middle ground.
But that's by it's very definition a compromise.
The stages are not perfectly accurate as they are and that would obviously have to get worse to some degree.
As soon as you start saying words like compromise, middle-ground, well, those are dirty words for many and enthusiasm often drops.

They can do more mileage with the current methods, they just need more budget.
Are you forgetting that DiRT Rally was made on a shoe-string budget compared to earlier DiRT games?

Where we have the potential impasse is on a sequel.

It would seem to make sense to keep all of the current stages (with a few updates/tweaks) and add to them.
With a bigger budget, we could theoretically double the environments while adding an entirely new stage or two to each current environment.
But that is rarely how it goes for racing games, especially Rally ones.
There is always this push towards 100% new stages, both because there is so much to choose from and because recycling them is typically frowned upon amongst the average gamer and journalist.
I don't think DiRT Rally has a large enough dedicated audience to live on the FIFA mindset of buying each new game every year.
Certainly this seems to be a big problem for Codies F1 series.

This is kind of the argument why, perhaps, DiRT Rally may have had more growth potential as a platform, rather than a game series.
As per @SkiddyMcCrash request, maybe move this to its own thread, I will contribute there.  I find the subject interesting, but its not gossip, more of wishlist discussion.

  2. Most of us (here) have had this game for almost for a year now.  For console guys its brand new.  SO we'll just have to be patient, I guess.  If by the end of May we don't hear anything about a DLC then its best to figure the team has moved on to the next game.  Hopefully resources go to the next rally game and some don't get pulled over to the next GRID.  Maybe by the end of 2017 well start getting hints of the next title.

  3. Another Mitsubishi would be nice, but I would only accept the 2005 model with the storage [EDIT: STRANGE] wing setup.  I know newer ones had some legendary drivers but I like to see different cars that are not normally in rally games, like the Saab but both might be a pipe dream

  4. He has probably pushed to get Ford to sponsor him in WRX.  I think the one reason is because the GRC is nothing more than a destruction derby, I watch it only for the reason that it's the only rally(?) related tv offering in the states, it just something to do.  WRX has its fender rubbing but from what I have seen it doesn't have the redneck nascar mentality of jumping out of the car to get in another drivers face because they pushed them into tires etc.  Neither  makes for good racing.  It turns into reality tv very quick.

    Good morning
So ken block coming to WRX, teaming up with Bakkerud
Any chance 2016 teams are going to make it ?
    Or maybe DLC ?
The other bit of news Guy Martin doing a round of the
    British Rallycross championship  :)
I really like Ken Block, he has done a lot of work to 'get the word out' about rally here in the states.  However, I don't expect him to do all that great in WRX.  Why?  Because every championship he has attempted to win, he has come up short.  Rally America, came down to the last round, crashed and lost.  GRC, lead the points up to second from last race, crashed and lost it.  He's smart enough to know his competition and skills to attempt a full WRC season.

He has talent, but lacks the patience it seems to follow through.  He tries to follow the McRae "flat out" attitude, but that age has passed with the technical precision that is applied today in racing.

So like I said, I'm a fan, but not expecting a season win in WRX.

  6. Come on @gfRally That's awfully confident on the R4 ;)  Not even sure how it'd fit with the current R4 WRX.

I think the liveries are the 'one thing' that we got right, which one is obviously open to the above good speculation, and whilst it'd be very cool to get the tribute R4, i agree that it's not that which was approved, but that doesn't mean we won't.

Agreed on the McRae estate stuff.

We don't know how many new cars will be coming in the next/last big patch :). Or if there will be DLC after that to fill in other categories.  There are a lot of possibilities for cars (cough Renault).

  7. The New Impreza R4 is coming, more than likely with Higgins 555 livery.  The car isn't the 'cool thing' approved' but almost certain the Higgins 555 and McRae's LEGENDARY liveries are.

I still believe that the McRae family has given some approval for use of Colin in DR.  They have already given some nod for the one Ford livery with the McRae name on it.
