It seems that the tech is 90% there, but realistically I am sure that last 10 is harder than the 90 that is given, however.

Can confirm, the last bit is rather hard.  There was a previous game that had a lot of work trying to get it to work and be first party compliant, but there were problems finishing it.  It was intense and hard to get working right.

I've been curious about this, does Sony own the old engine or something? Or did they just want to make a new engine?

When purchased we did not purchase any of the products or code/content they had previously made (which makes a lot of sense, IP law is big).  All of the work they had previously done is owned by Sony.  This is a lot like when we bought the Sega Racing Studio or Swordfish (I would have loved to work on a Fifty Cent game!), we got people and a building but no products.  SMS is different as they owned the games they made.

They had the Driveclub/Motorstorm team make it but that team is only familiar with the engine they've been working on for a decade or what ever.  And they'll make SMS work with the Madness Engine which is.......holy ****

I'd just like to chip in here, the Cheshire studio wrote the engine for Onrush from scratch, it was not an existing engine.  They have since then modified it a fair bit for DIRT 5.

  4. It is likely going to cause problems.  The Steam profile and RaceNet ID do some linking together.  A better idea would be you logging out of your Steam profile and him logging into his, that way he will get his save game from the cloud save.  This means making sure he had cloud saves enabled on his own machine (it is the default option, I believe).

    So anything to share?

Cheshire studio is having a lot of renovations done, which is good.  The new Birmingham studio is really nice, I got some jealousy at parts of it.

    #gossip? maybe it is nothing

What i not really understand are the DLCs at SteamDB. There are 4 unknown depots. Basiclaly three are for Scotland, the Impreza and the Legacy. But what is the fourth and final one than? Might there be an extra suprise after all?

Never try to read too deeply into these.

Psh, says you. Seemed to be kind of like an EA thing, they tried one game and then they "shuttered" the studio and absorbed it into the main conglomerate.

But uh, why were you visiting?

My job involves making sure all of the development teams are kept up to date with what they might need for the future.  I also went to visit the new Birmingham studio recently.

Their purchase of the Evo Studio guys was a perfect time to make a new engine, which I think they did, used it for their one rather impressive game, and then shut it all down.

Our Cheshire studio is still up and running, I was up visiting a few weeks ago.

    There you go

Would you be able to try the two following things if possible please?

1: Unplug all USB devices, except for keyboard and mouse) and boot the game?  If you have a non-gaming mouse, that would be good to try.

2: Go to /Documents/My Games/Dirt Rally/ and delete the folders in there, then reboot.

These sometimes help narrow down the problem.

Ha! It was only after I posted that I realised the dates for that week @CMMcBabe (And that there are three cars releases elsewhere in the season).

Fine, take week 7 off then you part timers... 😄

It will be hard, I need to figure out what drink to have for the bells.  Laphroaig is always good but I might get a bottle of Port Charlotte.

ok, so this is probably my favourite post on the forum now... (also, good to see you're still popping in once in a while) but in my defence:

there are fewer locations remaining to be announced and released, so it's easier to guess which ones they will be.

and at least for me, having a better idea of what's coming will not make the announcement of new content any less exciting for when said content is actually released. in other words, surprises can be a little overrated.

I changed job role, I have a little less time to look at the forums.  There is a constant temptation to make some fake depots and branches, just to keep it interesting.  I do enjoy reading the guesses people make, and sometimes mailing on correct guesses to the teams involved.

There are some other annoyances with the Steam data, like people making guesses of a game's sales based on scraped data because they are usually inaccurate due to a lot of factors (giveaways, free weekends, refunds, etc).
