    DiRTy Gossip

I'm sure that will be mentioned in more detail in the DiRTy Show marking the release of the RX pack. With regards to kicking up the dust there isn't there wasn't that much of it getting thrown about at Holjes. The gravel sections get wetted a number of times during the day of racing, as otherwise on such hot and dry days like this weekend the dust would really obscure what people could see. Also, from what I've seen the gravel in gravel sections is quite shallow - only the sand/gravel pits are quite deep. Most of the RX tracks are primarily tarmac and even if there's quite a bit of gravel it rarely remains in bends for long :) Having said that when I tried the RX update with AI drivers they were kicking up dust on the downhill section, just before the jump - a little bit too much especially when one doesn't know the track that well... What was cool to see was the aggression level of the AI drivers and how they drove the cars. They were going sideways, the car was moving and they were not taking prisoners. I know that Paul wants the AI tweaked and slowed down, but I think some of that aggression and the manner in which the AI throw the cars about would be welcome.

Good spot, seems to be the case.  Whoa! That's a very good spot (was it the very first thing @justbiglee did when he got back to the office ? :P )  I guess it just won't be ready in time. Hopefully, a quick post/tweet will explain why. I guess the feedback from the drivers meant some extra tweaking. A good thing :) The extra time will definitely help the team address the comments from the drivers. The thing is, and I hope @KickUp won't kill me for talking about this, the RX cars have a new feature of the car handling model. Due to this extra layer of car handling simulation the cars are set-up slightly differently and the team is learning how best to set the cars up to get the grip values and characteristics as close to the real thing as possible. We've heard from the DiRTy dev team before then as the Early Access progresses various elements of simulation will be added and adjusted. An example we've already seen is the simulation of downforce on Pikes Peak cars with big wings. Paul said at the time the lessons learned from PP will be rolled out to rally cars. However, the team is holding back with adjusting all cars each time they add a layer of simulation, as that would simply take too long. So, as I understand it, towards the end of EA the cars will be re-visited for the final polish and tweak of their handling. So with this new layer of simulation added with the RX cars the story is likely to be the same. Anyways, if you see me banned from the forums in the near future you'll know that I wasn't supposed talk about the above :P

Sounds great! The only thing I'm a bit worried about is that Bakkerud's best time IRL was 02:58.952, while 2.06 in game? That's not just slightly off the real times. If the track itself is almost spot on, then the cars surely need some tweaking to be slower. The race the drivers attempted was 3 laps long, with one of these laps being with joker. The 2:58 time is for a 4 lap race. The team is keen to have the lap times close to real life results and will tweak various things to make it as close as possible to real life performance. However, the in-game track may not have the same level of dirtiness as the real life conditions so the game right now is a bit quicker. The speeds the cars were reaching in the game seemed accurate and those RX Supercars are really pulling!

    DiRTy Gossip

Hello all! I see there's an expectation of a report :O  This week I''ll try to put up some photos and tell the story of my trip. Long story short is that it all was simply amazing and I'm not sure any other motorsport weekend will ever top this one! When it comes to DiRT Rally Gossip I could share there probably isn't a lot of it... I've arrived on Saturday, which was the day after the team had many of the RX drivers come over to the tent to sample the game. I think there will be a YouTube clip from FIA World RX showing the competition between drivers and with an interview with Paul. It was clear that they loved the game and how Holjes and RX was represented. Not knowing the track made it difficult for me and the RX cars are very different to drive than anything else in DiRT Rally. Holjes track in the game is very, very close to the real life version. The crests and undulations require the player to really take good lines through the bends and rotate the car effectively. It looked great and was great fun to drive. I was not around when the drivers were trying the game, but @KickUp told me they were up to speed very quickly and were able to use their talent and skill to set really good race times. I've had four or so attempts at a 3 lap race with a joker and made the mistake of trying to push too early. The drivers were building up their pace, used the track knowledge and car characterstics to set good times (Bakkerud had 2:06, while the best I could manage was about 2:11 with some mistakes). I'll have to check with @KickUp whether I can say what the feedback was from the drivers, but overall they felt it was very close to what they would expect. The tweaks, which will be made based on the feedback, require some car set up changes but nothing major. Everyone can see their faces smiling in the pics - they enjoyed it a lot. Same can be said for general public and cross-kart kids who had a go at the game. @justbiglee had a brilliant idea of giving away DiRT Rally t-shirts - over the weekend we could see plenty of walking ads for DR. Also, RX trailer video was a part of the loop on the jumbo screens. People are excited for it now :) Team from FIA World RX and IMG were also very happy how it all turned out and were very interested in finding out what the plans are and what the feedback was. They clearly want this to work out as this partnership has the potential to grow both parties :) With regards to the real life racing event the noise from 6 Supercars ready for launch is unbeliveably terrifying! The TV does not do it justice I think. It's like six super scary beasts with slightly different sounds spit out fire and VERY loud bangs (more like gun fire!). Once the cars are lined up for the start the Swedish commentator shouts: 'Ready to race!' and this funny tune gets played out as the cars rocket forward! Then usually some rubbin occurs and the commentator reacts in a hillarious way screaming 'Aj aj aj' 'Oj oj oj'  :D The atmosphere at Holjes is fantastic and some other day I'll write a bit on how positively mad the fans over there are. I've got to experience the Happy Street at night - :O :O :O I can't thank @justbiglee and @KickUp enough for letting me tag along, ask too many questions, talk way too much and get to try the RX update so early on. I've had an amazing weekend with great company, got to meet even more great people and exchange words with fantastic and down-to-earth drivers. Oj, oj, oj! (I've got in-laws visiting this week, but one day I'll upload photos and some videos - here's what's out there now) https://youtu.be/F5O0BTGnCZg

    DiRTy Gossip

Good morning, I'm still gobsmacked by the great preview video Codies and Neil Cole released...! I really hope we'll get to see more of such previews for the RX expansion update and for Rally updates. There were so much great and informative stuff in the video: - how instantly the car handling model is switching between surface types and that each surface type has subsets - for RX the team had to work on the AI - will it be an improvement over the AI in DiRT 3? - there were these cool single line streaks as we were showed the dev screen in race: are these the paths/lines done by the AI or player's previous laps? - the detail modelled underneath the car body shell: dampers, welds, chassis plate walls and pressed sections (even if it's just textures), uneven gaps between sections of bodywork the cars are so nicely crafted - spotter system with recorded lines: how accurate and useful will be the guidance from the spotter? - what about the launch? will launching in RX be any different than in rally? Lots of questions, but it is clear to me that the team wanted to represent the RX as authentically as they could. @tbtstt going mental is proof that they're on the right path :) I can't wait to try it out this weekend!

That's an interesting subject. While they may have done some modelling for the RX cars the WRC versions have quite different internals and worse still the licence for them may belong to someone else.  For example is the current Ford Fiesta WRC licence owned by M-Sport or Ford?  In any case the RX pack is looking sweet :) I'm sure the visuals will be improved once it's released and in our hands :D

The only cars I've spotted were the Olsberg's Ford Fiesta and Petter Solberg's Citroen DS3. AI driver names in one of the segments had Grosset-Janin, Veiby and Pucher - Fiesta wit Timerzyanov's livery appeared in the video. Hopefully, the VW Polo makes it into the first pack so that VW Marklund and VW Sweden teams will be represented. What about Peugeot Hansen?  Maybe that car will be added in the Expansion

I've just watched a replay of @dirtgame Periscope stream: https://www.periscope.tv/w/aGVbXDE4NTMxNTl8MzI1MTg5NDcjyea_G8s6zEb6q1p4gCM_lFSrs4mDTmSoXIiQ_8g2ZQ== There was a mention that the devs are hoping that the VW Polo will be in the first RX update @KickUp also said they'll be based within Swedish Motorsport Foundation tent, so my guess is that tomorrow they'll be running a hot lap/race time competition for young drivers and RX drivers. I guess the trophy will be awarded to the winner :)

I *really* hate to rub this in your faces guys, but all going well I'll get to try the RX update over the weekend.... :D :D :D @tbtstt what other game would you get a PC for? Console release may happen eventually, but do you really want to see us rave about the RX content for 12 months while you don't have it home? Hm? :) Truth be told, the reason I got a PC last August was that after my visit to Codies I expected something DiRTy to come out in 2014. It didn't, but a good gaming PC if fantastic to play all games in 1080p@60fps. From what I've seen DiRT Rally is well optimised so even on a mid-spec PC it looks and plays really well. So Holjes track has been confirmed, I reckon a certain UK based track with a bit of history in RX will be there too and there was a third location certain Mr Lee travelled to on a research trip.

Temptation to go to PC World after work, buy a new PC and download DiRT Rally: HIGH. SO. MUCH. WANT. @tbtstt I would never want to interfere with your purchasing decisions, but DO IT! It would be awesome to punt you off in the first corner ;]

Yes, #WorldRX is in there :) Somehow missed it :P Then it's tweeted from their account so it doesn't get much more official :) But from a track environment point of I think the track should have those RX logos and banners. Unless, Monster threw loads of cash at Codies :) If Monster drinks are so keen to be so visible I'm sure they were keen on Solberg's livery on a Citroen DS3 :)

Haha! You know that will be tough... @justbiglee can be very articulate with his threats and I don't want to lose my VIP badge on RaceNet and dirtgame.com ...  I now regret not travelling to Sweden earlier - I'll have a tough journey to make from Oslo to Holjes between midnight and 9am... I'm hoping the sound of the Supercars will wake me up once I get there! :D I'm also missing some sort of a BBQ on the track on Friday (http://www.finnskogamk.se/) - is this the big thing @justbiglee was touting? Is the trophy for the best burger which makes use of IKEA lingonberry jam?  ... EDIT: Paul just pointed out something I didn't spot... I thought he was referring to Norwegian/Swedish youngster RX fans as Solbergs, but the boys in photo are Petter's and Henning's sons ;]

I guess its for the DiRT team who are on location, Paul has been posting pictures on Instagram. There's some sort of a media event? Do they have them before every event? Hojles is a special weekend apparently and the weather is nice over there so why not :) https://twitter.com/RallycrossWorld/status/616583080724271104?s=09 What if Paul or Lee get a passenger ride.........

At this stage it's difficult to know exactly how much RX content will be added to DiRT Rally as part of the Early Access scheme. Accoding to the timeline there will be two RX updates: Pack and Expansion. Where did we get the info that 3 tracks will be released? Was it confirmed on DiRTy Show? In any case it comes down to whether IMG insisted that a full season will be represented... Bearing in mind that Codies probably do not have the game budgets they used to and that World RX is still in development maybe they've agreed on tracks which are absolute classics and on new F1-venue based tracks. Codies have research material for track environments at Hockenheim, Turkey and Barcelona from the F1 games. Would it be a huge amount of effort to modify the infield areas to replicate the RX layouts? As @ThierryNeuville pointed out the Rally events in DR provide much more event duration and once the EAccess is over the 6 locations with 2 long environments each will make up the bulk of DR. As to the idea for discipline packs: personally I would welcome a DiRT World RX as an add-on to DiRT Rally if it had all the tracks and at least RX Lites as support category for career progression. That's just my view - I guess Codies will be able to gauge interest in RX content once they release it and read feedback on the announcement (surely it's likely to happen soon). All in all I think DiRT Rally devs have planned content for Early Access months ago. I also think they expected to have the RX licence at some point so that they've modelled up tracks for development. Any new locations for Rally or RX will be decided on based on how the Early Access goes and what people ask for.

Rygge airport in Norway is the best/cheapest way to get to the area of Rally Sweden and the rallycross location. I suspect they're driving over the border. Just don't do it too many times in a weekend or you get tracked by customs officials, in my experience! I'm doing the same on Saturday morning - that Holjes track is in the middle of nowhere :D  @tbtstt - have you come across any forum posts/guides on where to go/how to get to/tips when going to Holjes? I'll try to meet up with the DiRTy lads to squeeze some RX Gossip and info - I'm keen to know whether they introduce some sort of manual starts as that aspect of RX is absolutely key. Lee is doing very well as the trip's reporter - we should be getting lots of pics over the weekend :)

I agree with what @tbtstt wrote above and I also understand your reservations @griev0r  . I had a chance to try RX stuff at Codies in 2013 and that discipline has been in their games for a while. Of course modelling of the RX tracks, cars and design of RX features would have taken away from building stuff for rally. It is my suspicion that, because RX tracks are much more contained that maybe the effort of researching them and modelling is less than for a rally stage.  So if there will be 2-3 RX tracks it likely does not mean that 2-3 rally stages were sacrificed. In my opinion the direct racing in RX (either with AI or online) will provide a bit of variety for either the most 'I only care about rally' players. I still think that DiRT Rally will consist of 75% rally, 15% RX and 10% Hillclimb. WorldRX is growing and developing at a very fast rate. This likely tie-up would bring exposure to both DiRT and World RX. I certainly find the racing exciting, the promotor IMG is doing all the right things to make it sensible from the cost point of view and attractive to broadcasters. With how well DiRT Rally has began its EAccess and how well IMG is running the RX World Championship I think we'll get a really fun package for online or offline play :)

Haha - it's shaping up to be a great weekend, but I'll do my best not to enjoy it  I've just seen the programme for the weekend and it seems there'll plenty going on on Friday, and I'm arriving on Saturday morning (after landing in Oslo at midnight...). If Codies will be showing off the RX stuff to the drivers or WorldRX folks then they'd probably do it before they get ultra busy on Saturday and Sunday. So... I may miss that bit... But I won't miss the main heats :) They've clearly dropped the last remaining drops of subtlety and it's 99% sure we'll see some sort of news on DiRT Rally - World RX tie-up :D

I think it's to do with the box Lee pictured on Twitter. I'm sure he's taking some DiRT Rally swag with him to Sweden, but I don't think he'd be that protective of t-shirts :) There must be something more important in that box... Perhaps the trophy.
