So what do you mean by 'arcade'? Is Forza arcade?

    My definition:

Can you play it in an arcade?

For most racing games these days, that's a hard no.

Sim, "SimCade" (ugh, hate that word) and Arcade are fuzzy subjective definitions, and won't be resolved on this forum.

This argument over semantics has gone on long enough I feel.

Issue: Green Light Bug - Online Rallycross (RX)

The Green Light Bug (GLB) is a bug that seemingly has been around since DiRT 4, or at least that I'm aware of. In essence it's a bug that gives one or multiple drivers in an online RX race either a disadvantage or an advantage by triggering the green lights earlier or later than they do for the remainder of drivers.

    Hey there.

Turns out this was investigated quite a while back and as you rightly imply it's a tricky one to diagnose.

The end result after much investigation is that because of the random nature of this it can't be fixed I'm afraid.

I have seen quite some real drivers (who also do a lot of sim) have been complaining about iRacing. For example Supercars (Australia), where if you hit a curb a bit hard, you can turn the car upside down. Also mister Thiimm (who competed at the WRX esports events) even stopped an iRacing stream due to tyre model.

Seen that too, a lot of the IndyCar drivers had issues with it all too.

Tyre physics are a notorious thing to get right considering the myriad of things going on in real life in that regard.

Also, I agree that difficult doesn't always mean realistic. Apparently GT3 cars are quite pleasant (in their own brutal way) to drive in real life for example.

It makes sense; if you're going to be in a car for around 2 hours per stint, it better be comfortable or else you can't push it.

Possible the best sim current on the market is Asetto Corsa Competizione, both physics (best GT3 physics, dynamic weather, tyre model, etc) wise aswell as replicating the official series/cars/races and the tons of options you can do (livery editor, photo mode, set-up races for sprint or endurance with or without mandatory pitstops, share cars with other sim-racers, and much more).

What does David Perel think of ACC? He drives some of those cars in real life and is big on sim racing.

So, why are updates so large then?

The main reason is that updates to certain parts of the game require a full republish (ie: the entire asset being downloaded again) whenever a patch is released. This is most obvious with locations, but also occurs with cars and other assets too, depending on what is changed.

For Version 1.14, changes were made to Scotland, and to New Zealand, which required a full republish of both. There were also changes to a few cars, most notably the Ford Escort RS Cosworth getting new audio thanks to fresh recordings of a real car.

Hopefully that goes some way toward explaining why updates are larger than you'd expect.

We have a thread about the update here:

  5. The way I see it:

A "sim" in the racing context attempts to simulate real-world motorsport, whether it be through physics, rules etc.

Games can be "sims" with different levels of fidelity in their physics. While some r/simracing veterans may scoff at titles like F1 or Forza and how they are accessible to players of all skill levels, I still consider them "racing sims" because they make a good effort at replicating the feeling of real-world motorsport.

It's not a term exclusive to iRacing and rFactor 😉

Solberg World Cup crosses the Pond after Greece takes its toll

    • Close to 15,000 gamers start this week’s Solberg World Cup round four
    • Greece lives up to its fearsome reputation for Oliver at Pirelli Rally Argolis
    • Lukáš Matěja wins wins Pirelli Rally Argolis
    • OMP New England Rally is up and running now

Oliver Solberg didn’t have far to look for advice. His father Petter knows just how hard the Greek roads can bite. Solberg Sr tackled Greece’s premier rally 12 times, finishing on the podium six times.

At his last visit, driving a factory Ford Fiesta RS WRC in 2012, he came within an ace of winning the Acropolis Rally for a second time, only to be caught out by the tough, tricky and rocky roads.

He retired, but remained fourth, from 25 point scorers, in the championship.

Oliver also retired after a technical problem with his steering wheel (genuinely, not virtually) left him powerless to keep his Monster Energy-backed Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 on the road. He retired, but remains 67th in the championship. Out of 14,887.

The popularity of the Solberg World Cup in association with DirtFish continues to grow and continues to exceed all expectations. It’s seeing the popularity among his fellow gamers that brings a smile to the 18-year-old’s face today.

“Pirelli Rally Argolis was a tough one,” said Oliver. “I listened to my dad, he told me the stories about keeping the car in the middle of the road, but when your wheel is not exactly right it’s not so easy. Don’t forget guys, check your steering!”

Petter knows exactly what he means. Remember Greece 2002?

Petter: “The steering wheel came loose on my Subaru in 2002. I could feel the wheel coming loose and I was shouting to Phil [Mills, co-driver] to get the tool to tighten the wheel or it would come off in my hands. Driving with no steering is not easy!”

Oliver added: “We are 67th from nearly 15,000, that’s not so bad. Nearly 15,000! Can you believe that? It’s so cool to know people are coming with us on this rally and this journey and it’s so competitive. I want to say a big thank you to everybody who competed in Greece and a big thanks to Pirelli for the support.

“Now we go to OMP New England Rally and I’m really looking forward to it. I did this event in the Subaru [WRX STI] last year. The roads are just fantastic, it’s going to be very fun and I hope all 15,000 of us have a good time in the stages. See you there!”

OMP Racing’s sales manager Bruno Curletto is delighted to partner with round four of the Solberg World Cup in association with DirtFish.

Bruno said: “Having been in partnership with the Solberg family for decades, we are extremely happy to add one more collaboration to this long story [by] tying our name to this event. It’s a difficult time for the racing world, but we feel that gathering all the racing people together, even if only virtually, is the right way to brilliantly fight adversities. The Solberg World Cup is a great idea!”

    Hello everyone,

I have question to you about painting car in game.

I didn't find rules of Dirt Rally 2.0, and my question is:

    1. If will I do layout for car, will be compliant with rules of game?

Because I heared, that if I will do layout and I will use it him in Online Game, I will can have ban.

Thank you all for your support! 🙂

    Huh GIFs | Tenor

    .... why?

    It's not uncommon.

"When are you going to talk about ____" gets asked a lot for most games pre-release.

yes exactly. I am saying that you made a good guess. but you did not influence them. 🙂

To weigh in on this, locations and cars are chosen way in advance of a game's announcement, as it can take several months (sometimes over a year) to develop each.

In other words, a content list is pretty much decided before you all even know a game exists, though occasional changes to account for schedule changes or production timeline updates may shift things around.

An example: we wanted the SUBARU Impreza S4 to be the hero car of the Colin McRae: FLAT OUT Pack. That car was coming anyway, but it was further down the development timeline and we wanted to get teasers out in December/January. That meant the car got bumped up the queue to be ready for announce (this is also why it had the Legacy's audio in the initial teasers, before finished S4 audio was added in).

may I ask @PJTierney is there chance for 3rd Plain colour for all Cars in DR 2.0? if doesn't cost Codemasters licensing it, it would be nice.. (Blue for SUBARU Cars, Focus mk1.. Red for Lancer, Delta etc.. Yellow for Opel Manta, Ascona, Kadett )

Even the plain liveries need approval 😉

I'd say extra liveries, even blanks, are unlikely to happen.

(Ever wonder why the Group B quattro doesn't have one?)

guys but do you think they will consider our proposals ???

One thing to bear in mind is that the development team will have their own creative vision for future titles, which is what they'll go ahead with first and foremost.

They will have ideas about the game(s) they want to make, learnings from previous titles, insights into how people played/received previous games etc.

If some of the things they're considering line up with what people are suggesting then that's great, and can lead them more in that direction or inspire ideas/details they hadn't considered before. It's not like a feedback thread "designs a game from scratch" however, more like "is there a trend in what people are desiring that we may be able to satisfy"?

That's my opinion anyways, I could be wrong 🙂

Although not directly related to future titles, this video on player feedback is a good one:

This isn't DiRT related, but our... well at least @PJTierney's and mine, good friend has once again been forced to "shut down" PRC Trackside, this time because he made a compilation video of professional race drivers stating what they don't like about iRacing.

    https://twitter.com/randomcallsign/status/1258121167057162241?s=20

I'm kind of dumbfounded, sad, and confused. I really enjoyed PRC as he called things as they were and tried to bring attention to issues, while the terrible community did as much damage to him as they could, including things that really shouldn't be mentioned. It just sucks that sim racing has become so stagnant that people actively block forward progression and demand that things literally never change at all.

I know he recently put up a video calling out all the people that bullied him online over the years, as well as a few criticising iRacing's response to criticism, but either way, looks like he's been through some stuff.

BIRD-CAM! You should include it as a preset I'm sure it would be very popular!

(as made famous by PJT in all your favorite track showcases!)

I sank hundreds of hours into F1 2011 back in the day, so I’m used to that angle.
