    DiRT Rally 2.0 Road Book - 08/04/19

Not sure, it was a while ago, forum / roadbook / blog ??? Anyway, have a read of my comments on another Audio thread here. Watch the vid of the 1977 RAC Escorts in action. Codies Escort sound is not even close, sorry !!

    DiRT Rally 2.0 Road Book - 08/04/19

Thanks for the update Christina. Pleased to hear the BMW M1 is getting a sound update. Can you confirm when the updated audio / sound pack will be released for the Mk2 Escort ? The current sound is, sadly, not even close to a 1976 Group 4 works Escort ! Cheers.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

Thanks, see what you can come up with, I am keen to get involved and help out, I have a wealth of hands on knowledge that I am happy to share.... for free ! I had a similar discussion on here about 2 years ago when DR was released, a Codie sound dev confirmed on the forum that the sound for the Mk2 Escort came from a 1966 Datsun GT, I kid you not !!

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

F2CMadMaXX, I note your points. I would be interested to know where you got your info from on the Escort sound recording ? Can you share ? Regarding the Escort, if indeed a BDG engined car was found and recorded, something, clearly, has gone wrong. either the actual recording method or equipment was at fault or, as I suspect, a fuel injected car was used for recording. The BDA / BDG on Webers has a very distinctive sound, on UK events we ran the cars without air filters or a simple mesh air box over the bell-mouths of the Webers to stop ingestion of stones. On more dry dusty events such as the Acropolis, we fitted full foam filters. The awesome sound of the Escorts in the late 70's on UK events, mainly came from induction howl resonating in the engine bay from the open bell-mouths on the twin 48DCOE Webers. Kugelfischer injection was used on many works cars in the early 80's and changed the sound but it's reliability concerned many drivers and most reverted to Webers. Fuel injection has come a long way since then and most Escorts rallying now are injected. However, thankfully, there still many purist owners out there that still run on Webers and not difficult to find. Cars running with full air filters or injection sound very different due to the absence of induction howl through the bell-mouths. I'm sure this is the case with the Escort sound in the game. Right engine, wrong spec. If you watch the vid of the 77 RAC you will notice that the Escort, Corolla, Chevette and Fiat all sound very very similar, this is because they are all 4 Cylinder, 2 Litre, DOHC engines running on 48DCOE Webers without air filters. I posted the video of the 77 RAC because the sound quality is excellent so members here can hear the true sound of a works Group 4 Escort, I don't think anyone will disagree that the difference in sound from the game Mk2 is like night and day. I do hope Codies will revisit the sound pack for the Escort, if they truly nail it, you guys that enjoy the DR2 76 Escort are in for a real treat. If anyone can put me in contact with a Sound / Audio Codie Dev, I would be grateful. Feel free to PM me on this. Thanks.

How Far Away Is Realistic Audio?

I feel the pain of the OP and I use the Mk2 Escort as a good example. Unfortunately Codies have not got it right ! They simply have not captured that wonderful BDA / BDG on Weber's sound. It sounds more like a Millington engine to my well experienced ears. A shame really as they have done a very nice job on the rest of the car. I dont dispute the quality of the recording equipment or the method but I am rather suspect of the choice of car to record. I say this with some authority as I attended every Welsh, Scottish and RAC Rally from 1975 to 1985 as a spectator and some 2 years as an employee of Ford Motorsport at Boreham actually building these cars and enjoying countless hours of pre event testing in the forests and disused military tarmac ranges and service support on the internationals. Codies have based their car on a 1976 Escort so to be fair in comparison, here is a clip of Escorts in action on the 77 RAC and Clarks Cossack car on the 76 RAC. I'm sure you will agree that the sound is quite different. Please watch this on a PC with good speakers. It will sound rubbish on a phone, tablet or laptop. I doubt if Codies will update it now so this begs the question, are there any talented sound modders out there that can come up with an authentic sound pack for this awesome car so that members can, finally, enjoy the Works Group 4 RS 1800 in all its true glory.

your favourite engine sound in game?

I wish I could say the Mk2 Escort but unfortunately Codies have not got it right ! They simply have not captured that wonderful BDA / BDG on Weber's sound. Here is some better footage and sound from the 1977 RAC. Same spec Escorts. Enjoy !
  13. I bought the Deluxe version from Amazon and installed it last week. Not been able to play the game yet as it constantly crashes when the stage of choice is selected. I get the error message " DR2.0 Executable has stopped working, your computer is low on memory" I can't believe this to be the case, its a custom built gaming rig, getting on a bit now I admit but should handle it. Here is my rig spec. Asus Z87 Pro motherboard. Core i7 4770K CPU. 8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3 RAM @ 1866 mhz. Samsung Evo 1TB SSD. GTX 980ti SC GPU. Dell 32 inch 4K monitor at 3840 x 2160. Win 7/64. Not tried anything challenging yet, all I am trying to do is take the Mk2 Escort out for a test drive in NZ ! Your thoughts and advice for a fix for this would be welcome. Cheers.

    DR2 Wont instal

Bought the Deluxe Edition for PC on DVD from Amazon but struggling to get it installed ! Steam account is all up to date etc. Put Disc 1 in the drive, it goes through the motions with Steam and places a desktop icon and that's all. Doesn't ask for disk 2, 3 & 4. Steam says its installed but when I hit PLAY an error message appears that says the 'Executable' is missing. Can't figure out where I am going wrong ? Any ideas chaps ? Cheers.

Yes it is now. And it’s got new audio too :D This is most excellent news indeed. Can you confirm they got rid of the IRS and replaced with a single leaf live Atlas 4 link system ?

"most iconic" is highly subjective. (And probably dependent on age)  I don't find the Escort 'most iconic' at all... it's a often used car from that era but overall not more important than the Stratos or Quattro or Mini or RS200.  To me, the most iconic rally car would be the '99 Impreza, but it's subjective. "It's just like... your opinion, man." An excerpt from Graham Robson's great book on the RS1800.  Says it all really ! "Escort RS1800 (Escort Mk II) : This is a Rally Giant because it was consistently the fastest, the most successful and the most versatile car in the second half of the 1970s and early 80's. Developed from the Mk I, it was a conventional front engine/rear drive machine, which rallied with 2-litre engines of up to 270bhp. Rally successes were legendary - British (RAC), Safari, Acropolis, Finland (1000 Lakes), Sweden, Portugal, Canada - and more and more. They won 17 World Rallies between 1975 and 1981. RS1800s won the World Makes Championship in 1979, and were always close to victory, and always competitive. Escort drivers like Bjorn Waldegard (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981) won the World Drivers' Championships. Over the years hundreds - and this is no exaggeration hundreds of RS1800s were built for motor sport, and were the ideal car for almost any condition in the world because they were very powerful, but simple and rugged. The RS1800 was also the layout template which was copied by other manufacturers - for cars like the Talbot Sunbeam-Lotus, the Vauxhall Chevette HSR and the Nissan GTs of the late 1970s/early 1980s, which were really all Escort 'clones'. Ford claim, and they may be right, that RS1800s have won more rallies, at World, International and National level than any other car in the world." How right they are and its still winning rallies all over the world today. Codies should single out the RS1800 for special treatment and pay tribute to this "Rally Giant" and give us a proper works Group 4 RS1800.

Let the existing Escort Mk2 keep its place in the list, just give a makeover so we get an authentic period works / Sutton Car with BDG on Webers, how much work can it be ?

I see two Ford Focus RS Rally in the list, nice cars but do we really need two ?  One could make way for the RS1800, the most iconic rally car of all time that rightly deserves its place in D4.

The lack of Toyota in this list is disturbing Not as disturbing as the roof scoop and carbon fibre bonnet on the historic Escort Mk2.  For now I'm gonna sit back and wait for @Busterbvi to comment  Ha, missed your post Scousestig !  I find the whole Frankenstein hybrid Mk2 very disturbing, what's more disturbing is that they appear to be doing nothing about this travesty.   Nice to see the Manta 400 in Andrews livery though. Perhaps Codies will consider doing Russel Brooks works RS1800 in Andrews Heat for Hire livery and invite Andrews to sponsor it ?  Just a thought.  @KickUp   ;)

Not seen the set up screen yet but in the real life motorsport world we refer to the toe setting as in or out. Its the camber angle that is negative or positive. A typical set up for most cars would be about 1 degree toe in to compensate for the force on the leading side of the wheels  pushing the toe to zero as the car powers forward. The settings differ slightly for FWD and RWD. This also applies to your normal road car. Also known as tracking. The camber setting on most racing or rally cars is about 1 or 2 degrees negative but it does vary a bit on different systems.

Virtually none. Only a couple of Mk2 Escort experience days. Its why I went down the co driving path so that I could experience more of the sport without requiring the skill of the driver. I'll be taking my BARS course soon though so I'll have some kind of permission to compete. The DiRT 3 Impreza livery has gone now. Hope the Mk2 Escort experience rubbed off on you !  ;)  @KickUp

@KickUp I did ask before but maybe overlooked. Is it possible to give us the option of having the cars spot lights fitted in daylight ? Rally cars look so much more complete with them fitted.
