DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Yes it is now. And it’s got new audio too :D This is most excellent news indeed. Can you confirm they got rid of the IRS and replaced with a single leaf live Atlas 4 link system ?

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

"most iconic" is highly subjective. (And probably dependent on age)  I don't find the Escort 'most iconic' at all... it's a often used car from that era but overall not more important than the Stratos or Quattro or Mini or RS200.  To me, the most iconic rally car would be the '99 Impreza, but it's subjective. "It's just like... your opinion, man." An excerpt from Graham Robson's great book on the RS1800.  Says it all really ! "Escort RS1800 (Escort Mk II) : This is a Rally Giant because it was consistently the fastest, the most successful and the most versatile car in the second half of the 1970s and early 80's. Developed from the Mk I, it was a conventional front engine/rear drive machine, which rallied with 2-litre engines of up to 270bhp. Rally successes were legendary - British (RAC), Safari, Acropolis, Finland (1000 Lakes), Sweden, Portugal, Canada - and more and more. They won 17 World Rallies between 1975 and 1981. RS1800s won the World Makes Championship in 1979, and were always close to victory, and always competitive. Escort drivers like Bjorn Waldegard (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981) won the World Drivers' Championships. Over the years hundreds - and this is no exaggeration hundreds of RS1800s were built for motor sport, and were the ideal car for almost any condition in the world because they were very powerful, but simple and rugged. The RS1800 was also the layout template which was copied by other manufacturers - for cars like the Talbot Sunbeam-Lotus, the Vauxhall Chevette HSR and the Nissan GTs of the late 1970s/early 1980s, which were really all Escort 'clones'. Ford claim, and they may be right, that RS1800s have won more rallies, at World, International and National level than any other car in the world." How right they are and its still winning rallies all over the world today. Codies should single out the RS1800 for special treatment and pay tribute to this "Rally Giant" and give us a proper works Group 4 RS1800.

Let the existing Escort Mk2 keep its place in the list, just give a makeover so we get an authentic period works / Sutton Car with BDG on Webers, how much work can it be ?

I see two Ford Focus RS Rally in the list, nice cars but do we really need two ?  One could make way for the RS1800, the most iconic rally car of all time that rightly deserves its place in D4.

The lack of Toyota in this list is disturbing Not as disturbing as the roof scoop and carbon fibre bonnet on the historic Escort Mk2.  For now I'm gonna sit back and wait for @Busterbvi to comment  Ha, missed your post Scousestig !  I find the whole Frankenstein hybrid Mk2 very disturbing, what's more disturbing is that they appear to be doing nothing about this travesty.   Nice to see the Manta 400 in Andrews livery though. Perhaps Codies will consider doing Russel Brooks works RS1800 in Andrews Heat for Hire livery and invite Andrews to sponsor it ?  Just a thought.  @KickUp   ;)

Not seen the set up screen yet but in the real life motorsport world we refer to the toe setting as in or out. Its the camber angle that is negative or positive. A typical set up for most cars would be about 1 degree toe in to compensate for the force on the leading side of the wheels  pushing the toe to zero as the car powers forward. The settings differ slightly for FWD and RWD. This also applies to your normal road car. Also known as tracking. The camber setting on most racing or rally cars is about 1 or 2 degrees negative but it does vary a bit on different systems.

Virtually none. Only a couple of Mk2 Escort experience days. Its why I went down the co driving path so that I could experience more of the sport without requiring the skill of the driver. I'll be taking my BARS course soon though so I'll have some kind of permission to compete. The DiRT 3 Impreza livery has gone now. Hope the Mk2 Escort experience rubbed off on you !  ;)  @KickUp

Was covered by someone else.  They wont be selectable, but will be on the car depending on day or night stage That's a real shame, hope Codies will re-consider this. @KickUp ?

@KickUp I did ask before but maybe overlooked. Is it possible to give us the option of having the cars spot lights fitted in daylight ? Rally cars look so much more complete with them fitted.

The tile system is actually nothing new, it's been around in the flight simulation world for rendering photo real scenery for years and works beautifully & seamless. If the D4 system is anything like the systems available for FSX or P3D then we are in for a treat.

Nothing like standing in a wet field, waiting for first car due, and hearing the faint crack of anti-lag breaking the silence, from 2 miles away.... Welsh Rally, 1978, Hafren forest, Wales, one mile in, right in the valley, 3am, freezing cold, pitch black, total silence, then it happens, first the lights way off in the distance through the trees, then the sound reverberating off the hills building like an internal combustion engine orchestra, first Mikkola going like a train, Vatanen, Clark, Brookes, Waldegard, Arrikala, Pond, McRae all blasting past in their group 4 chargers, the unforgettable sound bugleing in the night, then your alone again in the middle of nowhere but in total awe of what you just saw and heard, it will stay with me for as long as I live ..... BDA on Webbers, oh hell yeah  ....Turbo .... Naaaah ! Most of my comments and input on here are an attempt to re create the nostalgia of  those golden days, perhaps I am asking too much.

Interesting, I have never noticed it and I have a good 5.1 surround system. If it is there, it needs to be well enhanced, in reality, in the right conditions, the reverb sound overwhelms everything, Hairs on neck stand up, awesome sound, quite a rush ! A good 5.1 system is only as good as its setup between amplifier and PC... also, DR wasn't the most surround optimized game.  The sound is definitely there for me, running a DTS surround and optical to the decoder.  Yeah, we've established it is there but it seems the replay / camera view is the culprit. With improved replays in D4 hopefully the sound effects will be more pronounced,  realistic and enjoyable.

I would like to see a slider for this, it needs to be there for immersive realism but can get annoying after a while.

Its just a pity that its a Polo WRC and not a Millington or BDA resonating through the Welsh forest!  :) With you on that one KevM, There's no sound like it ( It haunts me ! ) gfRally, thanks for the Turini vid, the reverb is definitely there isn't it, just needs the sound guys to tweak it to give it that WOW ! factor. It didn't cross my mind that it's the camera that's the problem, thanks for your input guys, good topic. Hope @sound_fx can sort it for D4.

KevM. That camera hack / mod certainly does showcase the sound mix better doesn't it !  Perhaps reverb is there in DR but the random replay style didn't allow the sound to come through as it does in stage side TV camera coverage. Let's see what D4 brings, fingers crossed.

If it is there, it needs to be well enhanced, in reality, in the right conditions, the reverb sound overwhelms everything, Hairs on neck stand up, awesome sound, quite a rush ! Yeah, but the problem is, I think, that in most scenario's in game, the car is so close to the camera that the actual direct sounds are louder than the reverb sounds. Or are the reverb sounds also overwhelming the direct car sounds when you're standing just a couple of meters from the car in real life?  Your'r right there Turbodevin, it depends on the conditions, when the car is out is the open, you wont hear it, its more prevalent in the forest or hills, as the car approaches, then direct sound takes over as the car passes you and reverb kicks in as the car disappears off. I posted a vid on P723 as an example. Take heli view in DR for example, right now you hear the heli motor and co driver voice, in reality, at that distance away from the car, you would hear the mighty roar of the engine noise reverberating off the trees. Paul has confirmed that replays have been improved, perhaps they could allow a few seconds after the car passes the camera for the reverb to kick in, if the sound guys get it right, it blows you away if you have a decent sound system. Here's another slightly better example. https://youtu.be/xc0QlueOwco

https://twitter.com/sound_fx/status/825104524251643909 Dunno about the rest but I would assume that some cars are in the same situation (pretty much final except for the mix), It could be purely the fact that I'm not used to hearing cars from Chase Cam, but both the Evo & 205 didnt sound how I expected?  :/ Can you tweet at Dave? I'm sure we will answer you. If you can't let me know and I'll ask him. Azoresst. I don't tweet but  is there any chance @sound_fx  Dave Sullivan could look at my post on page 723 and comment on getting some good & loud engine sound reverb in outside views when the car is belting through the forest & hills ? I think it would be a great enhancement and add some soul to the whole experience.  Those that have enjoyed it it real life will know what I mean.

Nothing planned yet. Maybe I'll be able to sleep ;) No time for that: you'll have to DLC to get started on... Never mind this sleeping nonsense !  sleeping is for wimps, you've got a Mk2 Escort to makeover !   :) ;)

@KickUp  If I may slide a couple of questions in. Has the problem with the user interface been fixed where you wipe out your car settings, FFB and controller settings if you hit ENTER on the keyboards to start an event ? Any thoughts on having the option to choose spot lamps fitted or not in day light ? I always think rally cars look naked without them !
