DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Ha, not quite @UnderclassGDfan: I have just read too many books on the Impreza! The early rally quattros (A1 & A2) were long wheelbase, based on the Ur-quattro road car and originally entered under Group 4 regulations. The Sport quattro was a short wheelbase development of the Ur-quattro; the Sport quattro was the road car, the S1 was the original competition rally car and the E2 the winged evolution car which followed in 1985. Yeah, Rohrl used an E2 quattro at Pikes Peak in 1987. The history of the quattro is immense, if you want to learn all about the different versions then I would recommend this: https://www.rallyandracing.com/en/rallywebshop/books/cars/audi-quattro-the-rally-history?c=1404 It's not the cheapest book but it is, in my personal opinion, by far the best book you will find on the history of the quattro. All the McKlein books are awesome.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

There were 424 cars built. The 22B was based on a Version 4 Type R chassis, all the RA were four doors. Yeah, that's the RA specification you are describing there. The JDM 22B also had a close ratio box, the 16 official UK 22B's had a longer sixth gear fitted by Prodrive (along with a few other minor tweaks). The early Group A and Group N cars were derived from the RA (as they were a four door), the Impreza WRCars were based on Type R (two door) then standard production (GD chassis onwards) shells.

The 22B was a road car designed to emulate the look of the '97 (S4)/'98 (S5) World Rally Car. "22B" is homage to the rally car: it's hexdecimal for "555" Colin owned a 22B (one of the #000 cars), but it was a road car, not a competition car. There is a complete post about it here:

1998 was the year the car was raced, but the 22B was a road car, not a rally car... ...it's been a repeat topic on this forum (and it's predecessor) for many years: I expect the mods to lead by example!

I was going to catch up with the Wales preview video later, however I have just been informed that @PJTierney declares that McRae raced a 22B in the video? Say it isn't so PJ...

Yep, that's him! Several of the owners at the meet were definitely in their retirement: collecting and driving Group B cars is definitely doing retirement right!

😲 BLASPHEMY! I can understand that, my love for the RS200 is more because of what it did in rallycross rather than how it looks: it's not pretty!

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

That is reckoned to be the best example of the RS1700T in the world (and the most genuine in terms of specification). It's absolutely spotless outside... ...and inside. The owner of the RS1700T (Brian Betteridge) also owns an RS200: Which is the cleanest RS200 I have ever looked around: He didn't bring the RS200 this year though. The RS1700T is super cool, but I'd still rather have an RS200!

Yeah, those are mine @PJTierney. As long as you are happy to leave the watermark in place, then no problem! More shots here if you want more choice: https://www.flickr.com/photos/22961613@N06/albums/72157709672443946

Yeah, that was Nigel Mummery. Damage was a lot worse than it looked. Rear clam needs a bit of TLC and a couple of suspension bits are bent. Nigel has been rallying that car for a good few years, it will be back on the road soon! I was gutted though, as I was going to ask for another ride in it before the end of the day!

Barely DiRTy Gossip (Jon Armstrong was at the circuit, so that is kind of a connection), but I was at Curborough last week for the 6R4.net track day. Some awesome Group B cars... 13. Yeah, Silverstone is definitely more fun to drive then it is to watch, so perhaps CotA might be the same.
  14. I am seriously torn on CotA: one half of me wants to see them to complete the whole 2018 season, but the other half doesn't care because the track was rubbish!
  15. I have some shots of those cars in action as well... ...watching Solberg consistently smoke his tyres on the last corner at Loheac is one of the reasons I love the DS3 so much!
  16. Disagree about the earlier 208's being slower: I thought the earlier 208's looked more competitive than the evolution that followed. Timmy came close to success a couple of times in the first half of the season, but seemed more distant in the second half (at least to me anyway) That is true with regards to the level of competition, though consider that the Megane is closer to the pace of many of the same cars it was fighting against last year (i.e. the Hansen 208's, EKS S1's and GRX i20's). I am gutted that Gronholm had to miss two rounds, as I was really hoping that he could take the title this year. I know it is still possible now, but as long as the Hansen duo keep posting consistent results one of them is surely going to win. Well we already have one, so I hope more will follow... but it's the DS3 I desperately want!
  17. Yeah, as @ianism said, Prodrive aren't involved this year. I have heard a couple of stories as to why, but I think funding is the most likely reason. That would figure, as the Baciuska Megane has the old Prodrive steering wheel on it. Yeah, Fors Performance are running the cars now. To be fair the Meganes have been going pretty well this year. The Clios are bloody awful though, I feel sorry for De Ridder and Raymond: two talented drivers being wasted in two unreliable cars. I see ES Motorsport are without a driver for Canada as Abbring is driving elsewhere. I wonder who they will get?
  18. Cooling in the front is less complex: it's more akin a traditional engine setup and far less plumbing is required. Efficiency is a potential concern, but then there are potential efficiency pitfalls with a rear mounted cooling setup as well. Interestingly VW Motorsport hadn't ruled out switching to a rear mounted radiator setup when they first introduced the Polo, as they were concerned that the engine might struggle in higher ambient temperatures, but that never became an issue. Moving the radiators to the rear does improve weight distribution and moves that element out of harms way. I always thought that RallyX Nordic regulation stipulation was an interesting move. Given when it was introduced I wondered if it was done to prevent someone from buying a VW Motorsport Polo and dominating the Championship! (Not that VW Motorsport are very likely to sell a car on though) I am still not entirely sure what Prodrive did there (my theory is that they were using vented radiator air/the rear of the car to act like a blown diffuser), but the regulations were changed very quickly after the Megane made it's debut: now air has to exit via the boot.

In the World Championship? Yeah, just once if I remember rightly (at Lydden). He has used it a bit in the UK Championship and Chris Hoy drove it in Barcelona earlier this year. Interestingly Oliver Solberg drove the MINI at the tail end of last year, would love to know what sort of lap times he got out of the car... ...I personally think Bennett would have been better off using the proven Fiesta in the World Championship instead of trying to develop a new car in that environment. And I agree: Lydden and the classic Mini would awesome!
  20. Great weekend of racing and, once again, some different names on the podium which is exactly what was hoped for this season. Can't but help but think OMSE got their timing wrong returning to World RX: they really struggled last year but, despite some issues (and arguably home soil advantage) they were right in the mix in Holjes. Looks like they have reverted back to a conventional layout for the cars (with the cooling in the rear again)? I wonder how different the 2019 cars are to those used last year. Without meaning to sound like a social media conspiracy theorist, I did question some of the stewards decisions (or rather lack of decisions) in Sweden. Timmy Hansen clearly pushed to pass in the semi-final, but nothing was said. Yet far lighter contact has been punished elsewhere? I am not keen on the lack of consistency.

Anyone who doesn't like kit cars is mad, because they are awesome! The Launch Control seasons continually seem to better themselves, can't wait for the new season to start. As you say Subaru are the dominant force as they are the only permanent works outfit. Incidentally, "Easier Said Than Done" is a great watch and provides another look at rally in the US. I agree with regards to the MINI Cooper: it has been an underwhelming car thus far and I am not that bothered about seeing it... ...perhaps controversially I also think the same about the MINI Countryman. It has had little international success and there are a lot of other rallycross Supercars I'd rather see. The i20 is the car I'd really like to see as that would complete the 2018 line up. I really like the Seat Ibiza as well, so hopefully that makes the jump from DiRT 4. I hoped that the Oliver Solberg connection might give us the Citroen DS3 (with a Petter livery or two as well). My favourite car to see in action of the last few years, plus I loved driving it in DR1 and D4 as it goes sideways alot.

    The Game Thread!

I have added it to my library, but I already have a list of PS+ games to work through! I have heard good things about it though, so I need to get round to it sooner rather than later.

As much as I'd like to see it in game, I'm not convinced by the accuracy of that statement by Bennett. I'd really like to see the GRX i20 and DS3 added to the Supercars.

I think it might be a little older than that. The model is based on the DJM built Mk.2 that belonged to Colin and was first featured in the original DiRT.

Because it's modelled on the period car used by Roger Clark... ...not on a modern Mk.2:
