For the E2, there were only 20 cars and they are all in Europe (not all in one piece either)
So that's almost certainly going to be a bit of compromise in there such as using an engine that wasn't full E2 500hp spec.

Obviously it could be better, but the list of the 'premium' high-detail cars in GT6 was around 200, so even that's a lot to try and record properly.

With myself, I've never had the pleasure of hearing these cars in real life, nor have I watched a truly substantial amount of videos, so there is a certain amount of ignorance being bliss.
I'm a little more attuned to turbojets and turbofans than cars
Yeah, the number of genuine E2's is very low, but the "regular" Sport quattro's are slightly more common - and there have been a few other Audi's with inline fives - so they could have surely sourced something a bit closer sounding than the generic engine note they used

The Sport quattro (in all it's forms) is best appreciated in person, but you can still get a pretty good idea of "that" sound via video. Make sure your volume is turned up...

Oh and - personal point of view - as much as I enjoy racing in GT, I have never rated the rally portion of the games.
I never really did either, but it's pretty much your only option if you want to drive a nice looking Quattro E2 or a barely ok Corolla WRC with modern graphics. That poor, poor overlooked car.
I would rather drive a poorly modeled E2 that has the right sound, than a perfectly rendered car that doesn't sound right. I personally find the incorrect sound paired to a car a much bigger immersion breaker than graphics: especially when the car in question is one of (if not the) greatest sounding competition car of all time! I appreciate I may be in the minority with that point though, as many seem to put preference on graphics.

That's a fair point with regards to sourcing a car to record. Sure they could have found an inline 5 cylinder engine to record somewhere in Japan though...

Funny thing is that rally in GT doesn't feel as bad as it might look in gameplay, especially chase came.
Yet the way the cars move on gravel in a replay actually looks pretty good.

I'd bet any rally fan £10 that they couldn't listen to that without looking at it and guess what car it is from the engine sound! Did they not even try and make it sound like a Quatrro?
Sound is my biggest gripe with the Gran Turismo series. Don't get me wrong: I own and have enjoyed every game in the GT series, but the sound applied to some of the iconic cars is utterly jarring.

I can understand that they don't want/are unable to go and record all 200 versions of the GT-R in game, but for the cars with a distinctive engine note, why they haven't bothered boggles my mind. They must have spent countless hours making the E2 look absolutely pixel perfect... then they just slapped a generic engine note on top of it.

Oh and - personal point of view - as much as I enjoy racing in GT, I have never rated the rally portion of the games.

Calling it a Polo R WRC is, of course, impossible.
Calling it, say... "Polo Rally" would be fine.

Yeah. If I recall correctly the two WRCars in DiRT 1 had no official branding on them. That's a hell of a result if CM have managed to secure both the Polo and the i20. As much as I am a fan of the Fiesta, the Polo is really the premier car in rally at the moment, so it would be superb to see it in game.

DiRT 3 had less dude bro crap
I think we played a vastly different game then.
Guess it's down to opinion: as @Didzis said DiRT 2 had all the joint events and the voices mid-race, that was dropped for DiRT 3. Thankfully DiRT 2 did allow you to mute most of the crap.

Not that DiRT 3 was perfect. I rather disliked Christian Stephenson before DiRT 3, but I fucking hate him now he has told me to "UPLOAD THAT CLIP TO YEW TUBE BRO" several hundred times. Sadly DiRT 3 did not come with a mute Christian Stephenson option.

  6. Have to be honest and say I can never understand why so many seem to prefer DiRT 2 over DiRT 3.

DiRT 2 was vastly more playable than DiRT as the handling was far better. But the car selection was limited and, although I quite liked what they had done with the "living in an RV" format, I didn't like most of the fictional locations and some elements of the presentation got very grating after a short while.

DiRT 3 had less dude bro crap, better locations, more cars, refined handling and the best sound of the three DiRT games: it's still the pick of the series (jn terms of console releases) for me.

I like when you revisit a Youtube video or something you saw when it came out and realize, "Good lord, that was 5 years ago?"
Haha: get that all too often! Speaking of which, I can't believe that...
We weren't that mean! We didn't know when it was releasing either!

For some background, in November we basically tested the handling and some stages. There were no menus and not all the stages of Greece, monte or Wales were there, and some didn't have pace notes. Also played on Lydden in some rally cars.
...the day at CM was over a year ago! As @RallyDriven said, what we saw was so disjointed in terms of front end menus etc. there wasn't many spoilers we could deliver on that front. We did at least get to find out about #ThatCar though.

Not seen as much of DiRT Rally as I would have liked in the last year. Hopefully they will confirm a console release and I can catch up with the rest of you!

Today's announcement from Citroen makes no sense for me. They will quit the WRC for 1 year, and then they will enter it in 2017 again...Why the heck they can't participate in 2016, just like collecting the kms and experience for the future?
I personally don't think the current-spec DS3 is on par with the Polo. Why pour money and development trying to sort that car when it will be redundant at the end of the year anyway?

I think their plan makes perfect sense: and it's good news for the WRC in the long term as Citroen seem to have a renewed interest in it again.

By the way, what happened with Matthew Wilson? I remember him getting injured at some point but looking back at the season trough the link @Porkhammer posted you can see him doing recce work. Was it just funding stopping his WRC career or something else?
I suspect that the fact he wasn't that good and only had a seat because Daddy ran the company might be the reason.

Perhaps Meeke jumped ship before now, maybe he's been a catalyst in Citroen pulling 2016?  Strong rumours that he's for Hyundai.
Autosport are reporting that Ostberg won't be a part of Citroen's plans in 2016 and that they are still in talks with Meeke.

The ideal solution would be for Citroen to allow Meeke to race for another marque in 2016, but I don't know how feasible that is (and it would surely be beneficial for Meeke to be involved with the development of the new car if he is to drive it in 2017).

Short term the Citroen annoucement isn't great news as it seems even more likely that the 2016 season will be a VW whitewash. I personally think that's a price worth paying for seeing a decent 2017 season and beyond though: Citroen (hopefully) competitive again, VW, Ford, Hyundai and the return of Toyota.

To my knowledge, it is Impreza GC8D; the one used as a homologated 1997 WRC car.

    I kid you not
GC8D is the correct chassis code for any Impreza saloon produced in 1997. The Impreza in the picture...

...would have started life as a two door (Type R) shell, so technically GC8D2DD.

Once completed by Prodrive the car received a new chassis designation and a new data plate, which would look a bit like this:

Super useless fact: the car in the first picture is chassis #12 (PRO/WRC/97012) from the 1997 season.

Most agressive hardcore looking Impreza, ever, bar none - fact!
I'm not that enthused by the majority of road going hawkeye Imprezas, but the S12b looks so mean, especially in tarmac spec.

I'm torn between the the S12b and S11 when trying to decide what is the best looking latter generation Impreza World Rally Car!

  13. Few photos from my last motorsport outings of 2015. Went to Italy in October for round 12 of the World Rallycross Championship...

...then into the woods of Aldershot for the annual Tempest rally...

...now a long couple of months wait until the first event of 2016!

  14. I heard rumours that the main reason for VW's speed above the other teams is their suspension technology. Don't know how much truth to that, but supposedly its leaps and bounds ahead of the other teams
Slightly off topic, but the Andretti Autosport team (who run the VW Beetles in the American Global Rallycross Championship) have been accused of fitting some sort of trick traction control system to the cars. Impressive engineering (but incredibly poor sportsmanship!) if that is the case.

As for the WRC Polos, they do look incredibly planted, even when they are travelling sideways at speed.

I heard over the weekend that while Petter will be doing WRX in 2016 it will be with VW.
That's an interesting bit of gossip. I had wondered if there was a possible Toyota hook up in the works (as that would also tie in with Petter's Dakar comments a few months ago).

If Solberg does go down the VW route for rallycross I wonder if he will be driving as part of the Marklund or Kristoffersson teams, or if he will run as a privateer team again?
I heard it'd be more of a factory VW effort.
That is interesting. Marklund Motorsport have links to the VW WRC team and Kristoffersson Motorsport are sponsored by a dealership, but neither of them are proper works teams.

A VW full works effort would be pretty interesting to see but, personally, I hope that Petter sticks with the DS3. A couple of years ago the European Rallycross Championship was flooded with DS3's, but there were only a couple being used by the front runners this year. Would be a shame to see the DS3 completely disappear off the grid in 2016.
