I will watch it online even if I have not been so impressed and interested by these 2 first rounds in France.

Yeah. I didn't think the first round was that great, but I cut them some slack as it was their first attempt at things. Just seen the entry list for this weekend:

    https://www.barc.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Titans-RX-Lydden-Hill-Entry-List-V1-WEBSITE-22072019.pdf

    15 Titans
    10 Supercars
12 Retros (including four Group B)
    5 Swifts

Actually a pretty good entry. Hopefully the racing is decent!

  2. Not World Rallycross, but the third and fourth rounds of the new Titans RX series take place at Lydden Hill this weekend. Anyone else planning to go?

Not really sure what to expect from the "Titans", but I see Liam Doran will be driving the rallycross RS200 again, so it should be worth going just to see that car getting thrashed!

Wait...the car that burned and the one that crashed in the first vid is the same one?

And it's still racing? Where they get the parts from?

Yep! The Q8 car is the "same" car that Pat was running in European Championship in the 90's... though it's been rebuilt many, many, times since then!

Some elements of the car have been modernised, some bits they are manufacturing for themselves. The engine is probably the rarest part of the car now, as BDT-E blocks (and spares) aren't easy to come by. Julian Godfrey specialises in those engines though.

I think they have a lot of spares, so it doesn't matter too much if they damage it. They run several RS200 rallycross cars.

Yeah, the Doran family own two RS200's (one rallycross car and one hillclimb car), plus LD Motorsport built and run another rallycross car for Steve Harris.

Didn't you watch Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2017?

This was a painful moment to be frankly honest. Pat Doran went a bit too far...

I love the fact that Pat was on the throttle all the way into the hay!

It's a rallycross car and it has endured far worse on the track! They had the rear clam fixed that evening and the car was running again the next day. It's still going strong now...

...Pat and Liam always put on a good show!

If I studied correctly from @tbtstt, the switch from S1 to E2 happened because the FIA wanted all evolutions of all Gr.B cars to have an 'e' in the model name: this is why the Lancias are called Evo or Evoluzione.

Yeah, that's correct, the Peugeot 205T16 E2 is a perfect example...

The germans had to switch to the new denomination by the FIA, but since they don't like being told what to do by the French, they call the car S1 E2 nowadays to mantain their original denomination. At least, this is how I see it.

...all the period documents from Audi refer to the car as "Audi Sport quattro E2", so they didn't seem to have an issue with the switch. The source of the "S1 E2" seems unclear, but is possibly due a publication error:

Did that come before or after the Porsche 956 one? Very similar timescale.

I think it was afterwards? I can't remember the exact connection, but I'm sure there was some Porsche involvement with that gearbox: I'll have to consult the quattro book and check later!

This is why i liked the Prodrive MINI RX. This brutal sound. Although this was with the 1.6L (WRC) engine. The 2.0L engine that was developed later (by JRM?) sounded more like a regular Supercar.

Thought this MINI eventually went to Riku Tahko in Finland, who still races it in rallicrosssm with a 2.0L engine and some different aero package.
Afbeelding kan het volgende bevatten: auto en buiten

I didn't realise that the Tahko MINI was the same car? I know it was based on a Prodrive WRCar shell, but I thought the cars converted for rallycross by Prodrive all went to JRM?

Liam debuted the 1.6L test mule at Lydden in 2013 and it sounded amazing. I hate the look of the MINI Countryman WRC, but it is a great sounding car. I am not sure who built the 2.0L engines for JRM, but they were ****. I watched them spending a morning testing the 2.0L car at Loheac (with Chichiret) and the engine sounded like it had a bag of spanners stuck in it.

All the JRM cars (three shells if I recall correctly) plus all the spares were bought by Liam Doran and Steve Harris.

Yeah he prefers the Fiesta, never seemed at home in the Focus which was a shame.

Arpin has been openly critical of the Focus and Block, although he has to tow the company line, hasn't been entirely positive about the Focus.

I still believe that the Hoonigan story in rallycross would have been very different if they had been running the Fiesta (though arguably they were only there because of the Focus).

Didn't they use an Audi 80 or 100 or the basic coupe beforehand?

Not sure about the Audi 100, but they definitely used the Audi 80: the Sport quattro had the same front window rake as the Audi 80 (rather than the Ur quattro) as the drivers preferred it.

This is the one I really wish was represented more in games.  I know why it's not but man it just looks way cooler.

The S1 is my favourite version as well. I actually think it's funny that the E2 is so beloved (and so famous) when it was the least successful rally variant of the quattro.

Many thanks! Will probably buy that book next month when new money comes in with a big truck 😄

And...the Pikes Peak-version is an E2, just with a different body kit?

Or is it more like an unofficial E3?

It's expensive, but worth it: you won't find a better book on the quattro!

The Pikes Peak car was effectively an E2 unbound from the WRC regulations: so more power and more aero. I guess you could call in an E3 (or perhaps E2+ would be more accurate?)

Well, you learn something new everyday

    Thought I read it somewhere....

Chances are you did @Brain.exe has stopped! The "S1 E2" thing is a very widespread error and, as @F2CMaDMaXX says...

    12 minutes ago, F2CMaDMaXX said:

True, however for whatever reason, Audi specifically wanted it referred to as it appears in-game currently.

...it has gone full circle, as even the manufacturers own licensing department seem to get it wrong!

I was first told about the mistake years ago and, despite being told by a very reputable source, I wasn't convinced as I had seen S1 E2 in so many places. It was only when I read this:

    http://www.ableitet.no/twentyS1/s1vse2.htm

That I believed there was truly an error. John Davenport is acknowledged as one of the most knowledgeable figures on the subject.

As far as I know, there was the A1 and A2 with long wheel bases. Then there was the Sport Quattro (no bodykit) then there was the S1 E1, which had 5 gears and a bodykit and finally the S1 E2 (also had a bodykit, had 6 gears and was a bit more powerful)

Pretty sure that was correct, but feel free to correct me on that one.

No such thing as the "S1 E1" and "S1 E2" is (useless fact alert) a widespread typo: it's just "E2", not "S1 E2".

    Audi Sport quattro (road car):

There were several upgrades planned for the E2, most significant of which was the sequential PDK gearbox.

@tbtstt You are a living info book about rally cars, eh!? 😄

Ha, not quite @UnderclassGDfan: I have just read too many books on the Impreza!

@tbtstt You are a living info book about rally cars, eh!? 😄

Would you be so kind to explain the complete story of the Audi quattro in rally?

All versions from the very beginning to the 87' Group A and so on?

I try to find as many infos I can since my interest in rally rised with the older WRC X-Box 360 games and DiRT Rally, but I can't find definitive infos on what was before the Audi Sport quattro S1. A2? Long wheelbase version? Thats all I know. And what happened after '86? I know that Walter Röhrl still raced in '87 in a Audi quattro, but not very long?

The early rally quattros (A1 & A2) were long wheelbase, based on the Ur-quattro road car and originally entered under Group 4 regulations. The Sport quattro was a short wheelbase development of the Ur-quattro; the Sport quattro was the road car, the S1 was the original competition rally car and the E2 the winged evolution car which followed in 1985.

Yeah, Rohrl used an E2 quattro at Pikes Peak in 1987.

The history of the quattro is immense, if you want to learn all about the different versions then I would recommend this:

    https://www.rallyandracing.com/en/rallywebshop/books/cars/audi-quattro-the-rally-history?c=1404

It's not the cheapest book but it is, in my personal opinion, by far the best book you will find on the history of the quattro. All the McKlein books are awesome.

Only 400 22bs were made I think. (My D&T teacher had one be worth silly money now).

There were 424 cars built. The 22B was based on a Version 4 Type R chassis, all the RA were four doors.

    24 minutes ago, Matt555 said:

They were lightened out of the showroom with no electric widows or AC or carpets. They also had shortened gearing.

Yeah, that's the RA specification you are describing there. The JDM 22B also had a close ratio box, the 16 official UK 22B's had a longer sixth gear fitted by Prodrive (along with a few other minor tweaks).

The early Group A and Group N cars were derived from the RA (as they were a four door), the Impreza WRCars were based on Type R (two door) then standard production (GD chassis onwards) shells.

Was the '98 WRC based off the 22B in any way?

I know Colin switched Imprezas as Group A ended, which is probably where I thought of 22B (by mistake it seems 🙂 ).

The 22B was a road car designed to emulate the look of the '97 (S4)/'98 (S5) World Rally Car. "22B" is homage to the rally car: it's hexdecimal for "555"

Colin owned a 22B (one of the #000 cars), but it was a road car, not a competition car.

There is a complete post about it here:
