    Non F1-racing discussion

I really hope Ticktum has a rubbish year in Super Formula, meaning he doesn't get the Toro Rosso drive next year. The guy is a 5 star ********, and I'm not just saying that because of his Silverstone safety car meltdown (resulting in his ban), but watching and listening to him over his career, he's just a total self-centred arrogant piece of ****.

    3 year predictions

On the Autosport forums a few years ago, a thread went up asking people to predict what they saw for the future of F1 teams in the next decade. Looking back 6 years later, it's amazing to see just how wrong many of the predictions were, and how mad the craziest predictions were, even though they turned out to be completely true. So how about we do it ourselves here, but make more detailed predictions for the next 3 years (2017-2019), and it would be amazing to come back in 3 years time to see how right or wrong we were. Some of these are outrageous predictions, but who knows what might happen! I'm probably gonna go into a helluva lot of detail, so forgive me. ____________________ 2017 - Red Bull will have a huge aerodynamic advantage, which will be so strong it will just beat the power advantage of Mercedes. Ricciardo beats Hamilton and Verstappen to the title. - McLaren score occasional podiums and leapfrog ahead of Ferrari. - Williams and Force India struggle and are beaten by Renault and Toro Rosso, who are regular points scorers. - Ocon comfortably has the upper hand over Sergio Perez at Force India. - Palmer disappoints at Renault. - Yet again, Sainz has a stellar season at Toro Rosso. Kvyat is replaced mid-season by Pierre Gasly. - Verstappen impresses, but his lack of consistency means he is beaten by team mate Ricciardo. - Bottas struggles in his year at Mercedes and is comfortably beaten by Hamilton. - Mid season, Sauber are bought by Ferrari and for 2018 become 'Forza Rossa', the effective B-team for Ferrari. ____________________ 2018 - Bottas is replaced at Mercedes by Esteban Ocon and therefore returns to Williams, replacing the now retired Felipe Massa. Ocon is replaced at Force India by Pascal Wehrlein. - Raikkonen retires at the end of 2017, and his Ferrari seat is taken by Carlos Sainz. - With Sainz and Kvyat out of Toro Rosso, they are taken by Pierre Gasly and Niko Kari, after an impressive 2017 GP3 campaign. - Alonso remains for one more season at McLaren, after good progress in 2017. - Palmer replaced at Renault by fellow Brit and rookie, Jack Aitken, after winning the 2017 GP3 championship. - With Sauber now called Forza Rossa, Ferrari give two of their young drivers, GP2 champion Charles Leclerc, and Antonio Giovinazzi, the chance to race in 2018. Teams and Drivers Red Bull: Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton and Esteban Ocon McLaren: Stoffel Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz Renault: Nico Hulkenberg and Jack Aitken Toro Rosso: Pierre Gasly and Niko Kari Force India: Sergio Perez and Pascal Wehrlein Williams: Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas Haas: Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen Forza Rossa: Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi - Mercedes catch up to Red Bull on aerodynamics and still with their power advantage, they manage to beat Red Bull. Hamilton wins the title, from Verstappen and Ricciardo. - McLaren continue to rise, with Vandoorne and Alonso winning the occasional race. - With Ferrari on the rise again, Sainz has an impressive season, matching Vettel. - Renault score occasional podiums, Aitken struggles against Hulkenberg in his debut season however. - Tough year for Toro Rosso with two rookies. - Leclerc and Giovinazzi impress, both with very strong seasons. ____________________ 2019 - Lewis Hamilton makes a shock move from Mercedes to Ferrari, partnering Carlos Sainz. - Sebastian Vettel takes Lewis Hamilton's place at Mercedes, alongside Esteban Ocon. - Renault replace Jack Aitken with Romain Grosjean, frustrated from a lack of development at Haas. - Sergio Perez is frustrated at Force India and moves to Haas, taking Grosjean's seat. - Kevin Magnussen is booted out of Haas and is replaced by rookie George Russell, who has been put there by Mercedes as a young driver. Teams and Drivers Ferrari: Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz Mercedes: Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel McLaren: Stoffel Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso Red Bull: Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo Renault: Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean Toro Rosso: Pierre Gasly and Niko Kari Force India: Pascal Wehrlein and Jack Aitken Williams: Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas Haas: Sergio Perez and George Russell Forza Rossa: Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi - McLaren have a superb winter and surprise everyone by becoming the top team, ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari. - Vandoorne and Alonso battle it out for the title, with Alonso finally getting that 3rd title at the age of 38. He duly retires at the end of the season. - With Hamilton gone, Mercedes begin their downfall. Vettel takes his time to settle in, and him and Ocon score the odd podium, but can't challenge for wins. - Hamilton has a solid first season at Ferrari, scoring occasional podiums along with Sainz. - Renault remain around the 5th place mark. - Grosjean struggles and retires at the end of the year. - Russell has a brilliant season and beats Perez comfortably, he will also retire at the end of that season. ____________________ Long term predictions - Red Bull have a great 2017, winning the championship, but don't win again until 2023/2024. They always remain in the top 3 however. - McLaren to finally reach the top in 2019. Alonso wins the championship that year and retires, replaced by Lando Norris. Him and Vandoorne battle it out for the 2020 title. - Mercedes to begin their downfall in 2019. They won't win again until around 2025. - Ferrari still struggle but finally start winning with Hamilton and Sainz / Leclerc at the start of the 2020s. - Renault to finally win again around 2022/2023. 2017: Ricciardo, Red Bull 2018: Hamilton, Mercedes 2019: Alonso, McLaren 2020: Vandoorne / Norris, McLaren 2021: Hamilton / Sainz / Leclerc, Ferrari 2022: Hamilton / Sainz / Leclerc, Ferrari 2022: Renault 2023: Red Bull 2024: Red Bull 2025: Mercedes

Steve Jones has grown on me a lot. I wasn't sure at first but he's a breath of fresh air I think. I used to really like Will Buxton but not so much anymore... He seems to have gone more 'clickbaity' in his opinions and expressions, and I wish he went back to being a good old proper journo who happens to be good on camera! Also, it sounds silly for me to say this, but I find the way he speaks really irritating...?! He's so gushy and lavish in the way he speaks and it's started to really grate on me for some reason. Sounds weird I know. Yeah Lee is fantastic. I can't remember another reporter who had such a natural rapport with the drivers. She's leaps and bounds better than Rachel Brookes. Heck, ANYONE is better than Rachel Brookes. She never seems to show any emotion, and the way she asks questions sounds so forced and un-natural, and you can clearly see that most of the drivers don't really enjoy talking to her...

My dad happened to meet some of the Sky F1 team recently and he said that Crofty was by far the nicest and chattiest of those he spoke to, said he was a top bloke. But I agree, his commentary is starting to get on my nerves a bit... Ben Edwards is a gem, in my opinion he's the best motorsport commentator around at the moment, he's so passionate and it really comes across naturally in his voice. To be honest, the entire Channel 4 show is leaps and bounds better than Sky's. I could write a whole proper post about why the Sky coverage has got worse in recent years, but I'll resist for now. But Channel 4 just seems so laid back and relaxed, and the drivers seem to open up more with Steve Jones / DC / Webber than they do with Sky. It is a travesty that they only have highlights this year, otherwise I would watch C4 every single time. Dream line up would be: - Jake Humphrey (I miss Jake so much, he was such a good presenter) - Coulthard / Brundle / Davidson for pundits - Ben Edwards / Brundle / Coulthard for commentary - Ted Kravitz / Chandhok / Lee McKensie in the pit lane / interview pen

    Silverstone 2019

Yeah the live stage / fan forum events are free I believe. And as f1since08 said, the best chance to see the podium is to get to a gate and run!
  6. I thought it might be an idea to have a separate thread to chat about the new Grand Tour, because I'm sure pretty much all of you are gonna watch it at some point, so to keep it out of the Stuff Thread in case we spoil it for anyone, lets talk about it here! What did you all think of Episode 1 then? I was not disappointed! There were a couple of little things I wasn't keen about but on the whole it was fantastic, and it's so refreshing to have the trio back to their best again.

Despite the two Mercedes 1-2 finishes, I'm so looking forward to seeing how this year pans out because it doesn't look like there's a true runaway favourite yet. I think we'll need to take another 3 or 4 races to really see who's strongest. What a bummer for Leclerc, so disappointed for him.

    Silverstone 2019

Nice, you'll have a great time! I've been to the Grand Prix the last couple of years so here are my tips: What to take to the track: - Comfortable walking shoes. Silverstone is MASSIVE, and every time I go, I forget just how long you have to walk to get around, so make sure you bring proper footwear that is gonna be comfortable to wear all day, on rocky paths and other surfaces. - If the weather is definitely forecast for rain, then make sure you bring a proper winter coat + gloves + hat, because Silverstone is so windy and generally unpleasant in the rain and cold. I remember sitting in Club corner grandstand during the long red flag period of the 2012 British GP qualifying, just freezing my arse off because I didn't bring a proper coat. - If it's hot, sun cream and a cap. It's so easy to catch the sun. Also, even if it is sunny weather, still bring a waterproof jacket anyway because Silverstone weather can suddenly turn and you can never be sure which it's going to be! - Binoculars, but make sure they're light enough to carry around. I always bring these because very often the viewing areas and grandstands are quite far from the cars as Silverstone's run off areas are just huge. They're also good for general looking around. - Bottle of water and snacks, because all food and drink at the Grand Prix is DISGUSTINGLY expensive. I normally buy a lunch there, but rely on my own snacks for the rest of the day. - I'd also suggest a small cushion that you can sit on in your grandstand seat. If you're there for all 4 days, sitting in those uncomfortable plastic seats can get pretty painful for your backside, so a small cushion could do you good. Just don't lose it down the back of your seat when you leave, which I did in 2008 and my dad had to go through the grandstand scaffolding to fetch it. Best place to meet drivers... realistically you're pretty unlikely to meet any with a standard grandstand / admission ticket, but you may get a chance at the live stage events they do each day. Other than that, a paddock pass / hospitality ticket would be your best bet to meet drivers. Apart from that, not much else I can think of. Hope you have an amazing time!

Sometimes bad **** happens to good people and it's just incredibly unfortunate and unlucky. Sorry to hear your brother is having a rough time. By the sounds of it he needs to try and get her out of his life, she's causing far too much harm and stress than good. @McStanley Not all relationships are controlling and horrible, they can be good I promise!

  15. For me, series 8 - 15 have to be the absolute greatest, between 2006 - 2010. This is a list of my absolute favourite challenges: - Convertible people carrier - BBC Three Counties radio - Amphibious cars - Van man challenge - Stretch limos - Peel P50 around the BBC offices - British Leyland - Britcar 24h - Police cars - Top Gear UK v Germany (and Australia) - Lorry challenge - Car for 17 year olds - VW Scirocco adverts - Electric car challenge - Art gallery takeover - Building motorhomes Actually, that's a really long list... but it shows how amazing it was! And all those challenges were done in that 4 year time frame!

Interesting. So how many extra seats do you think would be able to fit in if the staircase was closer to the cab? And therefore I guess you could ask the question exactly how much more profit would come from having x amount of extra seats?

Some of you may have seen this circulating on Twitter, but it's strongly rumoured that Ted Kravitz has been given the sack by the head of Sky Sports F1. I really hope this isn't true. He's not everyone's favourite but I love him because he has got to where he is purely from his passion for the sport, and you can tell he just lives and breathes it. So many people involved in F1 television are ex-drivers, but he's a fresh change from that, and Sky F1 would be a lot worse off without him.
