DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

My thoughts exactly. The first 5 special events today are locked to a single car, Rally GT Poland (Porsche), Up to 2000cc Finland (Citroen C4 AND Heavy Rain), RX 2019 Belgium (Seat Ibiza AND Heavy Rain), Group B RWD weekly event (lancia 037), and Up to 2000cc weekly event (Peugeot 206). The second RX daily event is also in heavy rain. Between being forced to use certain cars, and the fact that I personally hate the amount of heavy rain that seems to be on the online RX events, the game really is becoming a rare play for me. I know the focus seems to have shifted to Dirt 5, but Dirt Rally 2.0 shouldn’t have been dropped so quickly with the potential this game has. The forum boards have also pretty well dried up for a game only a little over a year past release.

    Thoughts on AI Behaviour?

I think, in general, the AI so far have been fairly lifelike. I’ll see them respond to me and try to block. I’ve had some decent side by side moments. BUT, and it’s a big but, I’ve also noticed some really odd moments. I’m running a shortened F2 season with AI set to 94 difficulty, and I’ve been caught out by them moving over to block in response to me, but they move over to block under braking when I’m right behind. I’ll be off the racing line to pass, and I’ll basically be brake tested. I’m fairly certain the blocking under braking is worthy of a penalty in real life. Also, I had an AI car pass myself and two other AI cars under yellow, which is weird because the rest of the field was going extremely slow for the yellow. That’s my other point, the AI seem to go too slow during the formation laps and any time under yellow. I’m having to almost completely stop my car to stay behind at points. Overall, improvements were made and it’s a challenge to race them, but it sometimes is a challenge for the wrong reasons.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I posted about this previously in the bug reporting topic, but randomly DNF’ed in a daily RX event. Both the promo and bonus RX events today are Estering with RX supercars. The first event in the dry, completed no problem with the Ford Focus Mk 8. Second event in heavy rain, I completed with the Renault Megane RX and I get DNF’ed. I took the joker on the last lap of both, so why randomly DNF’ed on the second? I posted a (at the time) top 5 time in the second “bonus” event and I lose out. Can someone please explain this or has this happened to anyone else?? I’m playing on an Xbox One S and didn’t have any internet issues.
  4. @BarryBL In the hopes of not sounding too gimmicky, would Codemasters be open to the idea of donating some percentage of the sales of the F1 2020 Schumacher edition to Michael’s family? I understand there are probably licensing fees and stuff to use his image and cars, but I think it’d be a really good gesture for CM to donate back to the family given I’m sure a lot of people are now F1 fans thanks to Michael. I know he was a big part of what drew me to F1 when growing up. I think it’d be a good gesture, and it might also give people a bit more incentive to purchase the deluxe edition. I think we all are hoping for some sort of normalcy for Michael again, and just being able to donate to the family in this way seems cool.
  5. Random bug today. I was completing the daily community event, RX 2019 at Estering, and I completed the race, did my joker lap on the last lap of the event, and when I finished, it originally showed me near the top 10, about 5.5 seconds off P1. I get back to the main menu and have a DNF? My name isn’t on the leaderboard at all? Apparently finishing the race meant that I quit the event. I didn’t have any internet issues or server issues once completing the event. Don’t know if this has happened elsewhere or previously, but nice waste of 10 minutes. Xbox One, USA

    Final DR2.0 thoughts

Not that my opinion matters too terribly much, but now that Dirt Rally 2.0 is nearing the end of its support/content cycle, and with the GOTY edition coming out, here are my thoughts about the game having played since the beginning (pre-ordered for release). For reference, I am playing on Xbox One S with gamepad. Good: Content - With a good roster of cars and a nice mix of rallies, this game truly has a little bit of everything for rally fans. There are nice winding stages, there are quick, short blasts through the forest. I never really feel like I'm missing much if I want to just jump on and do a quick stage. I do miss the hill climb events from previous games, but I understand the licensing issues with say, Pikes Peak. Even though I'm not the biggest rallycross player, the rallycross action is fun and a nice change from constant rallying. The amount of DLC for this game has kept it fresh and it does make me want to come back and play more if I've stepped away from the game for a bit. Physics - The cars do feel very much alive, the best of any DiRT title in my opinion. You do have to think about how the car will react when placing it on the road, can't really just point and shoot. There is a good weight to the cars that makes you feel the movement. It might be even better if I had a sim rig, but for how I play, this game works well for me. Sounds - The game has some of the best car sounds and, in most cases, environment sounds from any racing game I've played. I love hearing the turbos whine and the exhaust pops, the sound of the tires fighting through the gravel. I recently purchased some decent gaming headphones, and that has really made me feel like I'm in the car with Phil Mills barking directions at me. Scenery - Some of the scenery on this game is absolutely stunning. There was a dusk race I did in Germany, with the sun setting behind the hot air balloon, that would've made any racing fan and photographer weep. Blasting through the trees of Poland, bouncing off the rev limiter, is a joy. The recent addition of Scotland makes me think of some of the roads I've driven in real life (here in Ohio) that are my favourite places to drive, nice and winding through fields and trees. Argentina, if I'm pushing right on the edge, makes me sit on the edge of my seat because I feel like I could fall down a mountain at any time. P.S. Good stuff: When the game is on point and really good, it is REALLY GOOD. I enjoy rallying on the game, and like I've said, the rallycross is fun to just fling cars around as well. Not so good: RAIN - The single, biggest gripe I have with this game is the rain/heavy rain. As someone who has played from initial release, there have been improvements made in the rain visuals which were much needed. That being said, just because the rain looks good, doesn't mean it needs to rain 95% of the time. For example, I do enjoy doing the rallycross events, but in my experience, apparently only rallycross events are held in the rain because the online events are ALMOST ALWAYS in the rain, and it's usually heavy rain. The new Scotland DLC, one of the first weekly events was 9 stages, of which 8 were some sort of rain. I'm sure it rains a lot in Scotland, but I live in Ohio and see enough rain, so PLEASE let the sunshine more in this game. Not every event has to be sunshine, it could be overcast or something, but PLEASE, in future titles, make the rain happen in say 5% of instances. Poland isn't much fun, in my opinion, when I'm going 100+ mph through a torrential downpour. If I'm racing in the hills of Spain, the rain shouldn't be falling all too frequently. I believe improvements have been made, but next title, make like every 5th event a rain event, not 95% of stages. Also, in free play, it'd be nice if we could get more weather options as it was in Dirt 4 or Dirt Rally. Just being in either dry or rain really doesn't give that much variety. DLC - I know this has been stated previously, but when paid DLC is mostly content that was in a previous iteration of the game, that really doesn't leave a good taste in your consumer's mouth. I love the 2000cc class. So why did I have to pay to have the cars that were in previous titles? Finland was a much welcome addition to the game, but having to pay for it just so I can say "Well, the physics have improved" doesn't really do much. I will say that the cost of the DLC is good, they did not break the bank by any means, but paying twice for something that is, for most intents and purposes, very similar to what it was before doesn't sit well with me. Monte Carlo is fun in DR2.0, definitely feels more realistic, but it also felt good in Dirt Rally.... Another thing with the DLC, is that if it is content carried over from a previous title, some of it just lost character from the previous game. I don't know if they've really done this in the Panzerplatte, but not having the downed plane and some of the other more "military" aspects of the location really kind of made it not as exciting. The DirtFish school is missing the container/parking lot obstacles from Dirt 4, and that really made it not as exciting. As much as I love driving across an empty parking lot, while that may be more accurate, it really lost the spirit from the previous iteration of the location. Inconsistent Pacenotes - Another fairly major gripe for me with this game is the quality of the pacenotes. I'm not a real rally driver, I've never done it in real life, but if Dirt Rally 2.0 Phil Mills was my real life co-driver, he would've got a gloved hand across his helmet. I'm sure my rally fans here would know when I refer to the rally drivers who yell at their co-driver when notes are wrong and/or the timing is off. That's how I feel with this game. I only have 90% confidence in the notes, and in rally, you need 110% confidence in the notes. I have the timing of the notes to almost the earliest, and it's not consistent. Sometimes it's three corners ahead. Sometimes I'm going through the hairpin when being told it's a 1-right. In Spain, it seems to me that there are "Don't cut" notes missing, through some of the quick winding parts, when there is a guardrail on the inside of the corner that I flip over from trying to cut. In my experience (and in Jon Armstrong's video about pace notes), the number of the corner USUALLY corresponds to the gear you can take it in. I don't feel confident in these pacenotes enough to really do that. There is a corner in Germany that used to be a "5-left, be brave" that, if I'm thinking of it correct, is a "2-left" in DR2.0, just because it is a slightly acute angle. Time is of the essence in rally, of course, and I did have to re-evaluate how I drive and adjusted my racing lines in some stages, but these notes just always seem a little off. I also miss the "acute hairpin," other "hairpin" calls, or even "square left/right" from previous titles, as the turns now seem to be more "1-left or 2-right". The hairpin calls seemed more accurate to me. Summary: This game is good. I spend a good chunk of my time playing Dirt Rally 2.0 The majority of what I do is rally racing, and there is a good amount of content to keep me preoccupied. But, for every good thing in this game, there is something that just holds it back from truly being a "game of the year" for me. Part of it is just a "been there, done that" from the previous title that might have been slightly changed, but not enough to make me want to pay for it again (although I did buy most of the DLC). Another part of it is the frustration brought on by constantly driving in less-than-ideal conditions (again, not that everything has to be sunshine and rainbows), but it is nice when you can just see out of the windscreen a blue sky. I know co-drivers are going to have different styles, but how things are in Dirt Rally 2.0 doesn't make me always feel confident in approaching the rally stage. Although I've learned how to drive a bit better, I should also be able to drive well because I have confidence in the calls in my ear. There's a lot of good stuff in this game, but now that the title is nearing completion, it's been a rough (I'll say it, DiRT-y) road to get here, and it's not quite the shining example of a great rally sim that it could be. Part of it is me, part of it is the limitations of my gaming system, part of it is just the game... Catch y'all in the leaderboards. :)

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

So whatever algorithm or whoever manually generated the weekly challenge of R5 in Sweden, THIS is exactly what I’ve been looking for with this game. The stages are mostly daytime, sunset, or dusk (could’ve had a night stage in there but I’m not complaining there wasn’t one), there were no stages in heavy snow, and THIS is exactly what makes this game shine. The setting was picture perfect, the sun going down on the stages and the sunsets were spectacular. Being able to just fly through Sweden was such a blast. As @ianism will attest, I whine fairly frequently about the amount of rain or shall we say, poor weather, events that I come across in the daily/weekly challenges. I know rally doesn’t always take place in perfect conditions. But having a rally challenge with mostly ideal conditions just really lets me enjoy this game. If more events could randomly generate (I say randomly @ianism again 😉 ), hardly ever would you hear me whine about anything in this game. This weekly challenge has been a real treat for this player.
  8. @ianism I’ve been playing the game that long too, since release. I was just saying, for the sake of this thread, that at least two (I’ve not kept a tally) events in the same week at the same location in the same conditions just gets tiring. In my opinion, Yas Marina has been a fairly repetitive RX event in the daily community events as well, but at least that one is mostly in the dry. As other people have noted, a bunch of NZ events in the community events as well. I know they were trying to gear a lot of the events toward the new players, but if that means the regular players are being forced to do the same thing every day, who’s gaining anything here?
  9. @ianism my friend, I posted my last post on Tuesday. It’s Saturday now and surprise, RX Supercars at Killarney in heavy rain.
  10. One of the not so random community events lately has been RX at Killarney. As much as I like Killarney, I’d like to go to a few more locations. I can’t recall the last time I raced at Silverstone on RX for a community event, for example. Also, lately, it also seems that Killarney is one of the most rainy places on the planet as 90% of the RX events I’ve done there are in heavy rain. There was also a few days of RX at Abu Dhabi almost exclusively. If we have all of these RX locations, why do I only seem to race at two? And please, please, PLEASE, before this game is completely off the support radar, is there nothing we can do reduce the number of events that are held in the rain? When the game released on the PS store or whatever, when more people were joining, it actually seemed like there were more clear races. BRING THAT BACK, please! I enjoy the game 100x more when it’s not constantly raining.

    Pace notes TLC

I had this big moment in one of the promo daily challenges, group A in Scotland, Rosebank farm. The call for the turn is a “6-right through dip, tightens 4, extra extra long.” I may have started the cut a bit too early, but COME ON GAME! Didn’t think to tell me “don’t cut” or “log inside” to avoid the brick wall, I mean, fallen log on the inside of the corner?!? I had no idea what I hit until watching the replay. You can see it just at the last moment in-car, it’s a bit more noticeable in the chase cam, but please game. Some of these calls leave so much to be desired. And apparently it’s a rainy day in the game as the three events I’ve tried so far (RX promo, Group A promo, and H2 daily event) are all heavy rain. FullSizeRender.mov
  12. US, Xbox One S It was working fine for about one glorious hour, and yet, here we are again. I gave up on it yesterday evening not loading properly, got hopeful this morning, but this is really getting to be unplayable.

FIX THE DREADFUL DARK/LIGHTING PROBLEM (please!)

One of the daily challenges today was R2 class at Poland, at 23:57 in heavy rain. I’ve never been to a real life rally, but I highly doubt they race at midnight in heavy rain in Poland. Regardless, the lighting on this game should’ve been completely re-coded before this game was released. It was near impossible to see on the stage. The headlights hardly light the stage far enough to make a difference, and with the heavy rain (while improved since original release), I am surprised I got as far as I did. I understeered into the chicane in the middle of the stage and barely bumped one of the bales for the turn, but that ruined my headlights (actually showed it was HEAVILY DAMAGED when repairing after) so I gave up in frustration. Not only did it take a couple of times to connect to the server to launch the event, the event was virtually impossible in my opinion with the lighting and rain effects in the game. I’m sorry CM, but if the next Dirt game doesn’t learn from the issues DR2.0 seems to have, I am going to have a serious talk with myself before purchasing the next one (especially if the DLC is 98% from the previous game 😉 ).
  14. More issues today here in the US. Server has been extremely slow while playing, received errors at the end of events saying it cannot connect to the server, I have to hit retry multiple times to get it through. It timed out on me while I was trying to CHECK THE GARAGE?!? It is absurd that a game has this many ongoing server issues over a year since release! I feel bad for the people who recently got it from the PS store for free (or whatever it was, I’m on Xbox so I’m going off what I saw on here). It seems that the GOTY edition and the McRae pack were released and then it’s just been thrown to the curb. I really don’t say this often, but it’s becoming unplayable in its current state. If I can’t look at the cars I’ve earned, if it wastes time trying to connect and takes multiple efforts, if I don’t get the credits that I’ve earned from racing (even if they do come through eventually) it really is not looking good for this game to be a game I keep coming back to. 😕
  15. Down again, US Xbox One S. I’ve played since the beginning and have seen the improvements that have come with this game, but this is getting to be a joke. I understand that there are more players playing now than before, but DON’T RELEASE IT in such a manner if the servers can’t handle it. Not a good impression being made on the new players...
  16. Playing on Xbox One, USA it’s been really slow loading from the server today, and I’ve gotten connection errors a couple of times. It eventually connects but still takes longer/more tries than it should (in theory).

Please review the co driver on dirt rally 2.0

I made a post on here titled “Final DR2.0 Thoughts” that agrees with this post 100%. Here are my thoughts on the co-driver from DR2.0: “Inconsistent Pacenotes - Another fairly major gripe for me with this game is the quality of the pacenotes. I also miss the "acute hairpin," other "hairpin" calls, or even "square left/right" from previous titles, as the turns now seem to be more "1-left or 2-right". The hairpin calls seemed more accurate to me.“ Further to the above, I am lucky enough to own both Dirt Rally and DR2.0, and one of the stages in Finland, I struggle on in Dirt Rally 2.0 where I’m fine in Dirt Rally. The course is Kailajarvi. Here is the big difference in calls where I always struggle: Dirt Rally: Right 6 tightens 4, jump maybe (1/2 way thru stage) Right 5 long over bridge don’t cut (2/3 way through stage) Same parts of stage in DR2.0: 5 right over crest, 50 (I always fly off the stage into an electric pole) 6 right tightens over crest, narrow (I fly over the crest and smash into the bridge railing) In my opinion, the calls in Dirt Rally better indicate the turns. I’d rather have a lower call and be able to go faster, rather than it be called a 6 when it should be a 4 or 5. There’s another part in Kailajarvi that’s a 4 left over crest with rocks outside, that Paul mentions the rocks in DR, but DR2.0 doesn’t mention rocks at all. As much as I like DR2.0, the problem with the pacenotes really makes it difficult to fully enjoy because it’s not much fun wrecking every other stage. 😕
  18. saw this video on YouTube, and it made me remember an issue I have in the game. At about the 1:15-1:40 mark, right when you begin the right mountain section of the course, there’s the tree-lined field you go through. Every time I get there in the game, the frame rate drops horribly and screen tears to an almost unplayable experience, especially in the rain. I’m playing on an Xbox One S, so I know it has graphic limitations, but I don’t remember having the issue be so prominent in previous Dirt titles. Is this anything that can be addressed, apart from me getting a new machine?

    Feeling a bit disenchanted...

So, I’ve been with DR2.0 since the beginning. I’ve seen the improvements that have been made throughout the game, I’ve seen the willingness to at least listen to us between Christina and @PJTierney when we’ve had our gripes about the game. But, I’m feeling pretty put out with Codemasters, I hate to say it. The continuing issues with DLC downloads is a bit of a joke. The first time it happens, sure, chalk it off to an error. But, when we’re almost done with season 2 content and Estering just today became available on my US Xbox, when I paid extra to have it the day of release via deluxe edition; I’ve lost my patience. Then, to top it off, as usual in my rallycross experience in this game, I can’t see the start lights in the cockpit so I have to rely on the spotter. Okay, sure, whatever, your vision is limited in car. THEN, when I am doing the daily RX challenge, I don’t get told that I have to take the joker next lap as it’s the last (no HUD to see lap counter) and get a time penalty for not taking it? The spotter NEVER SAID IT. Maybe it’s an audio bug with Estering, but COME ON. Speaking of audio bugs, the audio cut out is STILL present however many months after release. Doing the daily challenge with Group B RWD in Spain, and I get about 1/3 of the way into the stage and poof. Nothing. Just this game. Not any other game have I had this issue. For a game that’s been out for this long, I just don’t know how this has not been figured out yet. It’s frustrating, to say the least. Now that season 3 and 4 have been announced, I definitely am not willing to pay extra for a season pass or whatever, based on the experiences with DLC on this game. I’ll pay on a per-DLC basis instead, since that seems to be the way to actually play what you pay for. Another gripe is that yes, this DLC is probably 75% recycled content from Dirt Rally 1. Sure, it’s been updated. Yes, I am looking forward to tally Finland and Greece, the same as I’ve enjoyed the updated Monte Carlo, Sweden, Germany, etc. Having the classic subaru, Ford Focus 2001, those cars are my rally loves. But, really, I think I would’ve been more happy just paying for this content on an updated, improved upon, expanded Dirt Rally 1, then to pay extra for things I’ve already experienced just because it’s “updated” and then not have it work the majority of the time. There was a time that I would’ve pre-ordered the newest Grid game, the next F1 game, etc as soon as they become available. But, I’m sorry Codemasters, if this is the way loyal customers are going to be treated and this is the way you’re approaching business now, it’s going to take a bit more convincing than just some pretty screenshots to fork over my money willingly. Sorry for the long post! These thoughts have been brewing since the game’s release. 😕

    The Location Appreciation Thread

I’ve previously started a thread, similar to this! I think there are some definite shining spots in some of the stages that make you feel like a true rally driver. 🙂

    Feeling a bit disenchanted...

Couldn’t agree more! I still play daily, doing the challenges before I head off to work. Like you said, I love the game and when it goes right, it really goes right. There’s some shining moments in the game (sunset in Germany and looking over at the hot air balloon with the sun setting behind is one of the things I like to remember). There’s also some major head-scratching moments in the game that, to a player like me with no developer knowledge and a limited business knowledge, make me a little disappointed. The DirtFish location, for example, feels half-baked in this game. It was a fun playground in dirt 4. Now, I know DR2.0 is a sim-based game and it was a free location so I can’t complain much, but it lost the spirit it had in the last title. The two games are meant for different crowds, but if you’re going to put it in, it just needs some character like it had before. Thank you @CM_Ads for lending your ears and fixing the things that you can. I know it’s no easy task, creating a video game. But, you guys have done brilliant work before, and the teething stages of this one have seemed a bit longer lasting than before. But, you’re taking some good steps in the right direction.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

It’s not so much that, as I think there is inconsistency in the calls. In NZ, and as noted, in Germany, there are a couple of corners listed as “2s” that you hardly have to slow down for. Then, there will be corners marked as “4s” or even higher that you end up flying off the stage. I think the number can very closely correlate to the gear you’re in, but personally, I am struggling to feel as confident with Phil’s calls as I did with the ones in DR1. Both have pros and cons, of course.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I was poking fun at another topic on this forum, where the person mentions they weren’t sure why the game says “to titans” in the stage. I think they were new to the series so an honest mistake, but nonetheless, gave me quite a chuckle. I think, for me, the struggle I have with that corner is I remember it from DR1, and I don’t remember having as much trouble with it. I do think the off-camber, downhill aspect of it is a big part of why I’m struggling. I do feel pretty accomplished when I get the line right, but it’s a struggle at the moment.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

DR2.0 is my biggest love/hate relationship right now. Last night, I wanted to do the weekly challenge with up to 2000cc cars in Germany before I missed it. I check my cars, and all of my cars are actually in pristine condition, no damage at all. Load up the first stage and lo and behold, my car magically has bodywork damage even before I start. 😐 okay, no biggie. The tires icon is lit up, showing that rain is the next stage, so I go with the wet tires and begin. Going through the stages, I have 2 of the 8 stages listed as daytime stages. Can we get more true daytime stages, please? The issue, though, is that there are some truly beautiful scenery in the sky when it’s cloudy and dusk or the sun is starting to go down. I caught myself looking over in the car at the clouds with the hot air balloon in the distance. Shortly thereafter, a deer runs across the stage. YES, please. Those kinds of details are awesome. What’s not awesome is the audio bug with Phil telling me “Finish, to stop” like 3 times in 2 seconds. Also, some of the calls are so questionable. There’s a 4 right in Germany that “titans” and almost every time, I fly off the stage, skid through the grass, and into one of the stones lining the stage. Other times, there’s a “2” corner that is hardly a kink worth slowing down for. The inconsistency between calls drives me nuts sometimes. Not as bad as Dirt 4s almost always late calls, but I don’t have the faith in Phil I did with Paul in DR1. And then, I couldn’t tune my car at services for whatever reason during the 8 stages, so the long gear ratios and understeer was something I battled throughout. There’s so many steps forward with this game from previous titles that it’s frustrating when the steps backward are such a stutter. Each big step forward seems to be accompanied by a tumble backwards a few steps. On another note, the Group B RX cars seem to be enjoyable. I found them in the “items to install” in my Xbox and then was able to do the daily challenge. The car felt good in the 5 minutes I did with it.
