    "Next" DiRT game wishlist!

It was cool to catch up with a fellow rally nut.

What do you use to play DiRT?

My rig is pretty crazy. Basically it is a triple screen PC setup with all Fanatec Clubsport gear with DSD shifters and hand brakes etc and a whole bunch of gauges and shift lights. I have a ton of transducers on my rig which runs through a bit of software called Simvibe which takes the motion telemetry and sends them to the shakers. I am getting my new Fanatec Clubsport 7 speed H-shifter later this week and I have a GS-4 motion seat on the way from USA. I used to use a G27 before building this rig. DiRT Rally Championship

Hi guys.  I have done a little Shakedown video of some of my pre-season practice. I just got my DVD version of Dirt 3 that way I can leave it unpatched so I can get all my gauges to go, which was quick a mission to do. Much harder than DiRT 2 to set up. I have also added a pedal cam and heaps better lighting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnvaQdsvblg

    DiRT Rally Championship

I am cool with a pre-season shakedown. It will give me a chance to test all my recording gear. I have just set up a pedal cam and heaps of extra lighting so I should get some pretty good footage. I just got my DVD copy of DiRT 3 yesterday so I can finally play it with all my gauges. I am cool with Mountain Drive or Mutanen

    DiRT Rally Championship

I have fixed the link. Yeah I am +11 from you guys in the UK so it makes it hard, plus my ping time would be outrageous if I am playing on a UK server. I have really fast internet 40mb/10mb but when I test it to a server in the UK it drops to 3mb/1mb and I get around 300ms ping. I could give it a try but I think my car would be lagging out and jumping all over the show. BTW your link didn't work.

    DiRT Rally Championship

Small world, I am from Auckland also. I looked up the exact dates and my Irish side came over in 1851 which was only 11 years after the treaty of Waitangi. My Scottish side came 11 years later in 1862. Both immigrated right in the middle of the Māori land wars. It must have been very hard for them with the massive boat trip only to be thrown it to the middle of a war. My unlce has written some history about my ancestors back in Scotland here http://waikowhai2.wordpress.com/perthshire-macnaughtans/

Yes, I am of Scottish and Irish ancestry. Both my Scottish and Irish sides moved over to New Zealand in the 1860's. My brother has moved back to London and he did a tour of Scottland, He said it was Awesome. He visited our ancestral home which was cool. We have a really unusual spelling of the name Macnaughtan and we weren't a very big clan. I would really like to go over to Scotland someday but it is a very long flight from New Zealand. I could only imagine how hard it was for my ancestors on the boat. I know they stopped in Cape Town on the way.

    DiRT Rally Championship

Count me in Team Name: RPM Racing Drivers: Avenga76 & SkiddyMcCrash System: Both PC I won't be able to make the live stream because of time zones. I am in New Zealand so it will conflict with work. I just brought myself a PC-DVD copy of Dirt 3 so I can run it at version 1.1 because it doesn't have the telemetry bug introduced in Dirt 3 1.2, the steam version won't let you downgrade. Not sure what I am going to do when GFWL shuts down because I won't be able to upgrade. But running 1.1 will probably stop me from playing multiplayer anyway.

    Colin McRae DiRT

I tried Dirt 2 offline with my internet unplugged and it ran fine. So hopefully it will continue to run fine when GFWL gets turned off. I don't know what I would do if I have to reinstall the game because that would need GFWL.

    DiRT videos

Hi guys. Here is a video from Colin McRae Rally 2. It is of the entire Rally of Finland. 10 stages. I finished in about 23 minutes. I kept the replays and service areas in there, it you go to you tube I have included timestamps to skip to the beginning of any of the stages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOdzwJZWjLg I couldn't get CMR2 going on my mega rig so I had to make do with my old Logitech G27 on my laptop. It sort of felt fitting because it felt like I was going back in time using the G27. My CMR "Rig" My normal rig

    Colin McRae DiRT

Please don't let Dirt 2 die with GFWL. I can't play Dirt 3 because of the motion sim bug so I will be very sad if Dirt 2 dies. I might do some testing in Dirt 2 and see what happens if I try to run it offline to simulate the lack of GFWL.

DiRT Forum Competition - The Setup

Thanks. You have awesome skills your self. I had seen your Mini Gymkhana video before on youtube and you have amazing car control, and your Monte Carlo run looked real quick. I had a quick try at this because I wanted to see how much of an advantage my rig gives me vs keyboard. I tested it on Dirt 2, Hairpin run. On my rig I could get a 1:51 easily. With keyboard the best I could get was a 1:55. I tried both Auto and Manual with the keyboard and with both I could only get a 1:55. I am sure with practice I could shave a second or two off my keyboard time, but with that much practice I could probably shave the same amount of time off my rig time.  4 seconds over a stage that short is pretty significant. On some of the longer stages that gap would grow even larger.

    "Next" DiRT game wishlist!

Haha, yeah I think I did actually spend less on my first rally car. I have already ordered 2 Symprojects Simscreens. I am going to use them for my pedal displays. I'm not sure if they would support distance. Also the real problem is correcting for the amount of wheel spin you get in a rally car, I did a 4.2km stage in Dirt 2 as a test and the trip meter on my speedometer said 4.8km, so I had 600m worth of wheel spin :) At least with a Terra Trip then I can calibrate it to account for some of the wheel spin so it will be a bit more accurate. I really need a co-driver to make the corrections for me

    "Next" DiRT game wishlist!

How many buttons do you guys have on your game controllers and steering wheels? :O :P I have a total of 66 buttons on my racing rig, not including shifters etc. Got to love button boxes :) I have 8 game controllers on my rig :) Yes please. I would love really good motion and telemetry data. Here is what gauges I have on my rig, SpeedRPMWater TemperatureOil TemperatureOil PressureFuel Pressure at the moment only speed and RPM works in codemasters games. On my SLI display I would like.Stage timeSection timeTime to next carDelta to stage bestTotal rally time.Distance. At the moment I can just get stage time and my speedometer has a trip meter in it so I can see distance but with so much wheel spin of gravel then it is usually pretty far out at the end of a stage. I am thinking of getting a rally computer like a Terra Trip for my rig, maybe get a friend to co-drive for me. For motion I use a Simxperience GS-4 motion seat and 8 transducers for tactile feedback using Simvibe.

    DiRT videos

Well that was a bit of a fail. I got my G27 working with CMR2. Had a massive mission getting OBS to record CMR2 because it is so old and they only support modern DirectX games. Finally found a Direct3D/Directdraw plug in which worked.  Did the whole of Rally Finland, 10 Stages, just over 22 minutes. Took me just on an hour to record it all with replays etc. I did it in 1 take with no crashes, didn't even practice the stages, just relied on my memory for 10+ years ago. I was pretty happy with the rally. Went to check the recording and it had massive dropouts so it was pretty much unusable. OBS didn't drop any frames and the sound was sweet but the video would just pause, sometimes for minutes. Not sure if there is much I can do to make it better. I will keep trying. But anyway. It was really fun and the real thing I liked about it was the damage and failure states. Games back in the day used to be a lot harder in terms of letting you fail and the consequences of failure, in CMR2 you can't restart a race, if you crash you need to restart the whole rally or keep going. Damage stacks up and you only have a very limited time to repair in the service center after each 2nd stage. This means if you crash out on the last stage you need to do the whole rally again from the start. That is what I found the most exciting was the risk of damaging my car and having to start all over again. I found it to be way more stressful and tense than modern dirt games because of that risk factor. Bioshock Infinite did this with their 1999 mode, I used to play System Shock 2 (which is what 1999 mode was named after) and it was brutally hard. Maybe that would be a cool feature to add to the new dirt if you add multi stage rallies. Update: I got DXtory to capture it fine so I will record a video and post it here.

    DiRT videos

Hey guys. I went and found one of my old hard drives with Colin Mcrae Rally 2 on it. I couldn't get it to run on my main PC but I could get it running on my Windows 7 laptop. Any one want to see some videos from CMR2? I could even try to get my old Logitech G27 wheel working with it. I had a blast on finland. It brought back so many memories, I still remember the track but I was way off my old pace.
