DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I think I saw the fox in the dark last night in Wales. There were two eyes gleaming then the head turned and there was a streak across the screen as it ran off. It all happened pretty quick, but I'm convinced its real. I still haven't seen the giraffe in Dirt 3 though. Sim-cryptozoology is turning out to be one of my favorite subjects.

    The Game Thread!

Well, spent an hour on that stage trying to nail it in the Mini and still barely beat 4 minutes. Still having problems getting round the corners but starting to notice a few things. First very little swing induced by the handbrake. What the handbrake is good for is extra slow down so you lose less time going into the corner. Taking the corner is all about the right speed for me at the moment. If I go in slow then hit the power hard I can normally get round. Good news is that the lancia is getting better for me and I am under 3:30 on that stage. I think there is a lot more to be had out of it as well. It is a fantastic game.

    The Game Thread!

I've been under 4 minutes on the mini. I think with another 4 secs you might have pipped me. Strangely enough I couldn't get much quicker in the Group B Lancia, even though it felt a lot faster. I had real problems getting round that hairpin (3:27 I think in your vid). There is a real issue getting enough swing in the back end with the handbrake. Put your brake balance more to the rear. I find sometimes whilst still accelerating press the brake whilst also turning towards the corner helps, and then press the handbrake. The Mini is front wheel drive so will always understeer. I also have my diff set to loose. What gear did you shift down to? I went for 1st. You could also point away from the corner slightly and then start turning the other way and braking / using the handbrake. My best time on that stage is 3:53 now I think :) Ta. The problems were more with the Lancia than the mini. With the mini I find it is all about maintaining momentum, because of the lack of power. With the Lancia its more about keeping the damn thing on the road. The ideas are good though I'll try the brake balance. re the gear - yes I understand, more wheelspin might flick the back end out - but (embarassingly) I have to admit I am on auto. I tried the weight transfer/flick, didn't seem to have much effect.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

@PonchoBillybob  I know it's a bit OT, but I am having similar issues with the controller (XBOne controller). I don't seem to be able to get the back end to swing around enough to get a good line round some of the tighter hairpins. The one that was giving me the real issues was Bidno Moorland. There is a section where you go though a gate, through the first water splash and then down towards a tight hairpin. It's quite close to the end, in the final third of the track. I was running the Group B Lancia. It seemed like however I tried, I could not find a way of getting the car round the corner effectively. The handbrake didn't introduce enough swing and slowed the car down aggressively, not enough room on the track to get any weight transfer and the back was not swinging out when I applied power. I did try and fiddle a bit with the controller settings, but it did not produce any significant change.  Certainly there is no where near as much swing produced by applying the handbrake as there is on say Dirt 3. Apologies. Back to gossiping.

Yea it's a proper challenge, I've been waiting for a rally sim since RBR which I still play. Did take me a long time to get my wheel settings set to what I like. Just uploading a stage from Wales which I finished .022 behind 1st, and it's very obvious where I lost it. Almost had a huge moment where I went nearly 90deg on a straight, but managed to save it without losing too much. Setup plays a key role I have found. For me I need a lot of rear brakes with the 60s MINI and open diff so I can slide. The wipers don't bother me too much, but it can be hard to stay on track if you go off line and yea the countdown is annoying. I love the no OSD settings, as it means I have to push right to the end with not knowing if I'm quick or slow. When they add hill climbs I'm going to be very happy. At this moment there's only three locations, but each rally is pretty long compared to previous Dirt games. This isn't a game for people who aren't rally sim fans, as it can be pretty hardcore. Dirt 3 was very easy with very wide stages. Have you noticed that the exe is called Dirt 4? I wonder if they will change the name to that or keep the rally name. I'd prefer it to stay as it is, as its nothing like the other Dirt games. yeah I haven't got this yet but I was never any good at the Richard Burns one. I may get this at some point it's just not my priority atm. Are you on a wheel or the controller ? I have found this game quite hard, but definitely do-able on the controller, even if I turn off the assists such as traction control. Of course if you go straight for the Group B's and go hurtling through a forest in the middle of the night when it's raining then you are going to have a fight on your hands. And there are no flashbacks. I spent the whole of last night trying to master the first wales stage in a group B. It's pretty unforgiving, but quite satisfying when you get it right. Felt a real sense of achievement when I got the mini under 4 minutes ! great video hughesy. Was this question aimed at @Hughesy or me?  I think he uses a wheel when he races in my case I use the keyboard but that's the peripheral that works best for me when playing racing games. I know a lot of people say get a wheel or use a controller but it just doesn't seem to work for me as I have tried it. With my disability I just find it best to just stick with what works You ! I guess I'm just trying to give you a gentle hint that this one can be a bit of a handful. Hope this doesn't cause offence. There is quite a range of difficulty available in the settings so for example if you start on the 60s cars with full traction and stability its not so bad. Normally I start with all the assists off and am a happy cookie, but this time I rapidly found myself wrapped around trees, upside down, rolling the thing over, failing to finish the stage because I'd wrecked the car - basically a sorry mess - you get the picture. it took me several hours to get a single stage nailed down. I think it is very driveable with the controller, it just takes practice. I don't know about the keyboard, because I am no good with that.

Don't suppose you could tell me what stage that video was done on ? I fancy having a go at that tonight - lot's of jumps even in the mini and the water splash looked fun. My guess is a group B would fly over those bumps. The first stage (a lot of forest) that I was trying last night was much more closed in and pretty unforgiving.

    Two things

Just feel there hasn't been a time in the past few years where things have looked so good from a racing perspective, expecially if you are on PC, and I guess I feel frustrated that people can't see that. Dirt Rally is great fun. Project Cars is out in 10 days, and F1 in what, 5 weeks or so. And of those games at least 2 (Dirt Rally and PCars) are more sim orientated if that's what people are into. F1 is likely pretty much complete now, and all over bar final tweaking. We're not going to get any changes we ask for on here now, so probably just best to wait and see what it looks like and then give feedback. I know people on here really care about F1 and are desperate to know what its going to look like, but hassling Cm is hardly likely to make them change their entire marketing schedule, which is now probably set in stone anyway.

    Little help from PC gamers

Ok, I have Intel graphics 4600. With that its like the whole world slows down when you disable the Nvdia. Even if you go to the lowest settings. The good news (for me at any rate) is that when the nvidia high performance processor is activated you're cooking with gas.

    Little help from PC gamers

My one has the Intel graphics. It also has a nvidia quadro KM3100M (whatever that is). I have tried to get it to run with the Quadro, but its not clear to me that it actually is. In an hour or so I will try to put it onto the intel graphics only and let you know what happens.

lol. That made me blush for the first time in ages !

    Two things

There's a lot of stuff going on at cm at the moment. Overlord, Dirt Rally and F1. So it must be hard work to get all that marketing stuff sorted. Dirt Rally EA has just had the release and looks great. And for those who are interested in sims ( @mmpaw37 ),  maybe, just maybe it hints at a different direction. It's certainly more sim like than Dirt 3. My guess is that now overlord, and dirt rally have been done the next batch of info released will be on F1 fairly soon. My guess is it won't be for at least a week yet though.

anyone know how big the download is on steam ?

    DiRT Rally - It's here

I must have had a premonition ! Yesterday I installed steam and Dirt3 for the first time on a works PC to see how it would perform. It's a beast of a laptop for FPGA compilation and it worked pretty well, despite the graphics card being a bit average. Being sent off to somewhere miserable and sandy next week, so going to download this to keep me busy.

    F1 2015 No Career mode??

The law of untold consequences. Happens all the time when you do something in software - it impacts in all sorts of way you would never think/ However, what they could do is show the podium sequence from your eye view as a driver perspective instead - that way they would not have to have your head model included in the game. It would be great as well if it had some sort of first person control where you could move around spraying champagne at the models etc.

    Announcing F1 2015

Codies preview vids have always looked very good and very professionally produced to me. One of their strong points I think. But I think they have been "rightsizing" recently. And also I reckon there is still some issue regards what the final performance will be on consoles. Maybe they want to get all this defined before they start showing vids. TBH after some of the issues recently that have gone on supposedly with other developers over the wrong types of vids being subjected to tech analysis then its maybe not suprising that companies want to make sure everything is absolutely right before they do this. Anyway, given the release date the game is going to go gold soon, and when it does that there will not be so much incentive to hold back.

    Press Interviews ???

From what I've been told, the media just played the game, there is no locally recorded version of that gameplay.  That being said, we are trying to get everything sorted to show you, and while I unfortunately can't give you an exact time frame, please know that I'm pushing as much as I can to get something for you. I really really am.  Apologies for not giving you more, but be patient with us, we'll be able to show more in the next coming weeks.  Ta.  I know several people have asked re this in the forums. I just wanted to make sure you knew it was a high priority for a lot of people here.

    Project CARS

It's a valid point. I don't have too many issues with Horizon. It looks great at 30fps. I guess what annoys me a bit more is that Project Cars has always been hailed as this amazing game, that's going to achieve wonders whereas the reality is somewhat different. Have a read of this for example - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-09-28-project-cars-shooting-for-1080p-60fps-on-both-xbox-one-and-ps4 TBH I really don't know whether I will detect the 60fps or not. Maybe on track racing I will. Tearing is something I do detect and would/will be disappointed with. I think I would prefer 30fps locked than variable. However recent articles indicate the game might not even make that at 900p on XB1. I think (and hope) that Pcars will be a great game. It certainly looks that way on PC and I hope they manage to bump up the console performance somewhat over what I'm currently expecting.

    Project CARS

I thnk it is a bit unfair to analyse game's performance on a build from February... Apparently, the developer is rather unhappy about DF being allowed to perform this analysis so early on - Namco Bandai allowed too much bearing in mind the unfinished development. I'd probably reserve judgement until the game gets analysed post-release, but I would not be surprised if it struggles for frame rate with 40+ cars on track, damage, rain and fancy graphics. @dirt3joe you should consider getting a gaming PC regardless :) I struggle to see why they feel the need to have 40+ cars on track in the first place. To be fair, I am not too worried about the game in the respect that normally tt is my mode, so this is one of the less demanding modes and will probably achieve good performance on XB1. I struggle to see why on earth anyone would give an unoptimised pre-release version of a game to a reviewer less than a month before actual release and expect them not to review it ? Were they supposed to use the DVD as a coffee coaster or something ?
  22. dirt3joe

    Press Interviews ???

It seems strange that they haven't released a lap of the singapore track, like they did for the press. At first I thought that it might be due to the fact that they are still optimising the code on console and want to wait until it is good, but then I remember nearly all demo videos are done on monster PC's with high graphics settings, so this can't be an excuse. @LiteralZero, can you give us a date when we can expect to see a vid ?
  23. dirt3joe

    Project CARS

Sadly for me this is looking poor on console. Couple of weeks ago I got an XB1, mainly because of FH2 and this. I beginning to regret my decision. I think that Pcars is just too ambitious for console, and that a better choice would have been a gaming PC. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-project-cars-performance-analysis
  24. dirt3joe

    Project CARS

lol   http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-04-16-project-cars-gets-a-new-final-release-date 8th May. 16th April to 8th May feels like an awfully short announcement to release time. Maybe it was prompted by something ? Probably a bit of swearing in the office this morning.

    DiRT Rally Championship 2015

Monte Carlo was part of the dlc, so not in the standard edition but is in the complete edition. It's the best of the rally tracks IMO. A lot tighter than the others.
