    Project CARS

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-04-15-project-cars-technical-details-confirmed tech specs confirmed. Oh yeah, 60fps @ 900p on XB1 cf. 60fps @ 1080p on PS4.

Call of Duty. Is it Dead ?

Have to agree with most of the comments on here. Been continuing to play the single player campaign. Got to the bit last night where you have to creep around the building. Kind of reminded me a bit of the Last of Us when you are sneaking around trying to avoid the zombies. But for some reason the whole thing felt a bit stale and nowhere near as exciting, which is a bit strange because normally I like the stealth fps games. The hover bikes as well felt quite boring. Nowhere near as much fun as the snowmobiles felt on MW2.  Advanced Warfare isn't a bad game. It's just to me that it's got nothing new, and playing the campaign just feels like ticking boxes. The strange thing is I would have thought with all the cash they splurge on developing this sort of stuff they would have been able to come up with something a bit more novel. I can't say whether the multi player is dead, but it feels like the campaign pretty much is.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

This^ DIRTy update time! Here's what I've been up to this week! Monday - Bank Holiday - I spent most of Monday in my jammies enjoying the day off Tuesday - Sending over all the feedback for the DiRT 3 Complete Edition and trying to help get the info the team needed to try and fix this bloody FFB bug that came out of nowhere (It's fixed now, we're just testing it and I'll have more info on a patch next week) Wednesday - I spent in studio at my new desk near Paul and Darren, I got so much stuff done! Thursday - I knew I'd get nothing done today, its like the universe was messing with for all the stuff I got done the day before! read: I was doing F1 stuff. Though I did have a very cool call with a pretty awesome dude at Logitech which was DiRT related. Today - Finishing up a thing from Wednesday, the new guy showed me a plan thing he'd been working on this week, then there was the Codies Blog and I had to rewire up the new racing room today because they made us move all the stuff. I seem to have lost a set of Thrustmaster pedals in the process and broken a fan in a PC. This weekend I'll be trying to disconnect and chill out but I will be livestreaming some more DiRT 3 tomorrow and Sunday... oh and my little gadget that'll let me plug my PlayStation 1 into my streaming kit turned up. Check in the photo, next to the yellow oil drum.

Just a quick reminder that for anyone on FH2 I think today is the last day to download the fast and furious pack for free.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Codemasters don't know the release dates to that accuracy this long before the release. Hell, F1 2015 is still june sometime and that is announced. My guess is the codes are the reference codes for the cars they are going to include, so #108 will refer to one car, #128 another. There's a few reasons why you might want to refer to them as codes rather than the actual name of the car. So you lot will say, that means there must be 100+ cars in the game. But no. Because when I number stuff I often start at 100 or 1000. Or the list of car codes includes all previous cars such as ones used in Dirt and Grid as well.

    Frames Per Second - PS4 & XboxOne

I don't get all this 60fps malarky. I have been racing FH2 @ 30fps and it looks great. I think its just a number people like to get their knickers in a twist about without actually thinking about the details and the fact that 60fps means nothing without qualification. I'd probably be a bit hacked off though if I'd spent extra on a system and the performance was being reduced because a cheaper bit of hardware wasn't capable of doing the job. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem very fashionable to allow users to be able to choose between different configurations on console.

    Frames Per Second - PS4 & XboxOne

I think the codies CM posted a list of PC specs on here somewhere, so you might want to see how they match up with your current. I have no idea whether these are minimum or recommended specs. Here is the leaked stuff : http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-16-first-shots-of-f1-2015-leak I see in the text it says 50fps @ 1080p on PS4 but that it is work in progress and there is scope for improvement.

    Frames Per Second - PS4 & XboxOne

The quetion is difficult to answer without saying a) what platform / pc hardware and b) what resolution. Then you have a whole pile of effects on top of that, so for example it maybe easier to achieve 60fps if you turn off some sort of shading/other visual effects. IIRC the "leaked" work in progress pictures suggested a development framerate of around 50 fps ? There was no mention of what hardware type, but since the PC spec is so hardware dependent my guess it was probably on PS4 or Xbone. There was no mention of resolution. From what I can see so far both consoles struggle to achieve locked 60fps @ 1080p. Of the racing games FH5 got 60fps I believe, but I don't know about the resolution. Driveclub and FH2 were 30fps. Most devs seem to be struggling to achieve 1080p 60fps locked. Since CM maintain a lot of control over their code (own engine etc) they may well surprise us. Or maybe not. As ever, if graphics / fps really floats your boat then the solution is PC (I'm on XB1). Happy to be corrected about any of the above.

Call of Duty. Is it Dead ?

I don't play the multiplayer stuff, but I agree there is lots of stuff you can do with the level design. Clever level design beats silly perks any day of the week, Some of the co-op stuff I played with my mate on MW2 and MW3 was really well thought out, you really need to think about working as a team to make things happen. I haven't tried the GTA V heists, but my guess is that these are the same.

    Project CARS

I heard that one of the reasons for the continued delays was "optimisation" on certain hardware types. If they are going to achieve locked 60fps @ 1080p on all platforms then they are going to achieve something that a lot of others have struggled with.

Dirt 3, Dirt 4 and Forza Horizon 2

The more time I spend playing FH2 the more I feel it is the spiritual successor to Dirt 3. Will CM indicating we are "back to rally" on the latest release, it feels like any future game from them will not have so much additional stuff/non rally events. I made it down to the docks last light in FH2 and it felt very Dirt3-esque - very mcuh like being back in the DC compound. Dirt3 may not have been a great rally sim, but along with FH2, it was/is a very fun game to play. I've no doubt I will like future rally games from CM, but I wonder whether I will enjoy them as much as games. That said I still feel FH2 is missing good "traditional" timed rally stages, but maybe I haven't found them yet. A tragic missed opportunity IMO.

    F1 2015 Information Thread

If you own a PC, the only reason IMO for buying Xbox or PS4 is for exclusives. Games on PC are modifiable, run better and are cheaper. What's not to like ? I do not game on PC at the moment because it is too much of a faff but I have a XB1. If I had a gaming PC as well as the XB1 I would buy everything I could on that. I read somewhere that apparently exclusives don't sell consoles. Well to me they do. To own a PC and XB1 and NOT be interested in Forza and HMCC/Halo doesn't to me make any sort of sense.

Will a June release help sales

Your mistake is assuming everyone who is a die hard F1 fan must want a sim - ie die hard F1 fan = die hard sim racing fan. That's a false assumption IMO. In fact most F1 fans probably don't even know about sim racing. When they pick up the game they want something entertaining. They want some that claims to be a taste of the real f1 experience and has some tech detail, but they don't necessarily want something that's hard to play. Thing is with consumers a lot of them don't actually know what they want. My guess is if you asked die hard F1 fans whether they wanted a game that is as realistic as possible they would say yes, but they would drop it like it was on fire the minute they found they couldn't play it because it was too hard. Also IME video games players tend to be the younger crowd and these are the people that are likely to find a sim more difficult to handle.

    The Game Thread!

Honestly, I couldn't hugely recommend Thief. I'ts kinda OK, but Dishonored is a lot better. Yeah, I thought of getting it cos it was cheap and it sounds like the kind of game I would like, but having checked the net it is even cheaper on XB1 and I have a huge backlog of stuff to get through, so I think I will pass for the moment. Shame, I thought Thief was a great game. I did only pay £15 for it on PC. Oh, it's not off the list, just a bit down on the priorities ! He saved me a bit because if the response had been positve I would have just bought on PS3, whereas you can actually pick it up for cheaper than that on XB1 if you shop around.

    The Game Thread!

Those ride videos look pretty good. The helmet view gives a great sense of speed. I tried motogp before on PS3, I can't remember which one but it was a demo, I think 2012 or 2013 and didn't really get on with it but maybe I'll have another try at some point after seeing that. I guess it takes some time to get used to the bikes after spending so long on cars.

    Best news ever

I think you'll find it is just swapping out one suit for another. CM have the following major issues IMO - i) They don't seem able to leverage the community, and as a small-mid size game maker they have to do this. I say on threads very often that there are a ton of people who want to do mods and help with the game, but if they aren't given the tools to do this then they can't. ii) Their tech is probably too expensive to develop and not used in enough different games. It must take a ton of effort to develop something like an engine for example. If once you've developed that engine you can't use it on many, many games (like for example frostbite) then its difficult to make money. I think one of the things about CM games in the past is that the graphics have always been great. For me Dirt3 is outstanding and the graphics on PC hold up very well against XB1 and PS4, even 4 years after the release. So I kind of understand how they want to keep hold of the engine development as this probably allows them to develop their trademark high quality graphics. But unless they can claw back the dev costs over more games then they will find it difficult to make money. iii) They are a small fish in a big pond, having to compete increasingly against people with big wallets who are swallowing up all the licences. I don't think you can afford to be half in it in the racing world. People want to race ferraris, lambos and porsches. If you cannot licence them due to cash issues competing with the big boys then your sales base is going to suffer further and its a downward spiral into nowhere. In some sense if you can't get this sort of stuff on tracks and cars its better to go down a toybox turbo or super mario cart route. It's a matter of either crapping or getting off the pot. I love CM games. I want them to continue making great games and being successful, otherwise I wouldn't bother posting on here. Can't help feeling though that Dirt 3 was the high point and they are going to really struggle going forwards in a world that seems to be stacked against them.

Do like dishonoured. You are right, the graphics are a bit clunky, and the combat can be frustrating sometimes, but it is a game with so many options and ways to play. I have been through it once, but I think probably only touched on 50% of the game area. I really like the teleport system which adds a very different dimension to the usual FPS. I guess not so rare now, as most of the newish FPS's seem to have something like this.

Thief is on offer at the local sainsburys. I enjoyed dishonoured a lot. I much prefer stealthy thinking type play than run and gun. Has anyone played thief and what did they think of it ?

Dirt 3, Dirt 4 and Forza Horizon 2

I think its an interesting discussion. ARCNoOne mentioned grid 2 and the auto generator. I never bought grid 2, but I did see that some people found the auto generation of routes very artificial and not so fun to drive. It makes you think more about what makes a great rally track. Is it just a bunch of corners strung together, or is it something more than that. I feel that the reason the artificial generation might not work so well is because every corner on a "good" track is slightly different, and if all the corners are generated from a limited library then you don't get the feeling of a "natural" track unless the library becomes massive. You also have the issue on games like Dirt3 where elevation comes into play as well, so it makes it a lot more difficult to link track elements together. I really believe there are a ton of people out there who would want to do track design and create stages. I also look at games like GTAV and the work that has gone into their environment. I was sdriving down some of the backroads there the other day and thought that it would make a great rally track and was a shame that it could not be used in this way. I see the future where environments are created separately from the application (rally, first person shooter, cops and robbers etc) and then people put their game model on top of the environment, but in order to do this you need the appropriate environment designer - I reckon whoever does this will make a ton of money - a bit like minecraft. Anyway, back to FH2. I did the run into the sun last night with the F40. That was a lot of fun !

    is f1 2013 worth buying on ps3

2013 is the best edition for me (I am on PS3 pad control) In addition to things others have said there are 4 extra tracks as well as the classic cars but you need to get the right edition. I got the complete edition, I guess it was around £25 and good value for money IMO.  I have played 2014 a little on the pad, didn't like it so much. People said that the wheel on 2014 felt very good. Edit : Oh yeah, a lot of people comment on the tyre wear in 2013 - it's hard to manage for some people.

My god... how did I ever play this game?

lol. My guess is that they could put in sliders, round the output values to integers and you'd never tell the difference but be happy. That said I never fiddle with stuff like that so admittedly I have no clue ...  I often wonder whether if I was designing something like F1 I would include an extra page of controls that do absolutely bugger all but allow people to fiddle with them. That way the fiddlers can mess around with something and feel like they are making a difference. It gives people a feeling of control, even if they don't have any in reality. Subtle psychology and all that :)
