DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Hey Codies, Canada has gravel and snow rallies and the tarmac Targa Newfoundland rally. If you need some variety for North American events. ;)

I was looking for one but couldn't find a picture that showed the crew as squeezed together as in the 205.How's this for small and ridiculous (of a different nature)!

Since when was small and ridiculous looking a mark against a rally car? (I think the Yaris is the best looking of the current WRC games—like someone crossed a hatchback with a spaceship.)

I'd welcome the return of the editor, and wouldn't mind if it was more powerful and/or had more patterns. Sometimes I'd get a livery to look great on a hatchback but it wouldn't look so hot on a sedan. That said, D4's editor can be used to pretty good effect if you're clever enough. The number of recognizable liveries here still impresses me:https://twitter.com/Northlander74/status/919482145734832128

I was thinking the same thing. Neuville doesn't look quite ready to win the championship yet, especially the way Tänak started showing him up. But with a 3 point difference and Ogier sweeping, I'm happy to see Neuville try to prove me wrong in Australia! No one is going to be cruising to a fourth place finish to win the championship  in three weeks.

Dangerous Driving, an arcade racer from some former Burnout devs, comes out in February. The driving in their Danger Zone 2 was promising, not 100% there, but I’m looking forward to DD.  I still play Paradise, and would buy a remastered-for-PC Takedown in an instant.  Theres a nice renaissance of zero-G racers right now, but not enough arcade car racing games. Distance is more of a stunts score-chaser, and Racing Apex isn’t out yet. That’s all I can think of.

As a finn I'm having hard time to understand Lappi's move to Citroen. He is moving from the strongest team to the weakest team at the moment. Also same team as Ogier = always the number 2 driver. Latvala and Evans are the proof of that. Me too, if I was playing Devil's Advocate, I'd say that he's going to a team where Ogier will be number one but has inferred that he will step down; it gives him a chance to really build a team around him to take over when Seb retires and become a number one. Neuville and Tanak you'd expect to be around a bit longer. I think it was on the Absolute Rally podcast, they said it could also be the opportunity to work beside and learn from Ogier. That experience has worked out pretty well for Tanak. If this is Ogier's last contract, then in a couple of years Lappi could be leading an Ogier-built team with a few seasons learning from the champ.

https://www.autosport.com/wrc/news/139346/corsica-announces-its-wrc-calendar-reprieve Tour de Corse is in for 2019, Japan is out. WRC Promoter wanted Japan, the France-based Frenchmen-led FIA wanted a French round, whether that meant 14 rounds or 15. Quelle surprise. Can't say I'm happy about that, I'd like to see more variety in the WRC, and especially more "world" in the "World Rally" part, especially with China's demise. Not to mention the built-in Toyota fanbase for a Japanese round and the opportunity to attract a new generation of fans there. C'est la vie.

I like Dirt 4. Mind you I spend most of my time in the R4 WRX and the 205 GTI. And all the team management stuff has its hooks in me deep. Can't wait to see what DR2 does with that part of the game (honestly I'd be satisfied if it was identical—maybe a better presentation of the perks and some more livery choices).

FTFmyPTSD. Also, is it too late to record another set of pace notes with Phil Mills, where he's reading the notes while trying to eat a Cadbury Flake without making a big mess in the car? Look I'm just saying I'm not buying the game if that isn't in it (I'll accept it as a day one patch) Edit: And congrats, @SirPhilMcKraken !

Would be even nicer if they confirmed a ‘4 stage’, ‘8 stage’, or ‘16 stage’ format.

I like how the VR arguing continues circling the drain, but it’s coffee-vs-tea that causes a Codie’s employee to think, “Things are getting out of hand, I better step in here”. We all know what the important issues are.   (BTW DR2 better have tea support. No tea, no buy.)

"Gravey, if you were in charge in the next Dirt game, what would you do?"Uh, I guess I'd put Dirt 4's team management in Dirt Rally, and add new locations and some more rallycross circuits."Okay, we'll do it."

I'm sure 10k doesn't put too much of a dent in Ogier's Red Bull money. Speaking of Red Bull, I went to watch their Day 3 recap, and it was the power stage! How long has Red Bull been streaming the power stage (in addition to their Saturday stream)? I would have thought WRC would keep the PS to WRC+ Basic/All Live. Fantastic rally, and incredible finish. Now to wait six weeks...  :s

Thank you @KickUp for talking to us, listening to us, and for all your work on some outstanding rally games. You should be immensely proud of what you achieved at Codemasters with, in particular, Dirt Rally and Dirt 4. Best of luck to you in the future.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I believe Paul Coleman has already said that money isn't always the issue. Sometimes a license is simply unattainable due to previously established contracts. There's no such thing as an unbreakable contract. It happens in football all the time. The issue is more how much money you're prepared to pay to make two parties break a contract because it's in their mutual interest to do so. So money is ultimately always the issue. If you want it that badly you can always buy the company that owns the contract anyway - with money. Without mentioning any names there was a long standing contract in gaming to licence a particular  manufacturers cars that everyone knew about. It was supposedly "impossible" for those cars to appear in any game because of the arrangement. But some time before the arrangement finished these cars did appear in another game. Not too hard to work out what happened there. Words like "unattainable" and "impossible" are pretty strong. A bit like the word "need" which is very much overused IMO ! This happens so often I don't know if you mean Porsche (Assetto Corsa getting it first) or Toyota (Loeb Rally + Gravel). I think it’s referring to Forza 3 and 4 getting Porsche cars before EA’s exclusivity deal was up. That was a sub-licensing deal between EA and Microsoft, so sure, not much is unattainable when you have Microsoft’s money.

Citroen haven't written off 2019 yet: Citroen plans talks with Ogier about return to WRC squad for 2019 I'm not sure what Ogier might see in the C3 to choose that over the Fiesta again. But still, imagine Ogier at Citreon versus Meeke at M-Sport...

As much I would like to be proven wrong, I just cannot see this happening. The financial commitment required would be absolutely immense. Skoda representatives were presents at the last official wrc manufacturers meeting (Skoda never attended before). Doesn't confirm anything but it's a pretty big hint. And the rumour I've read is that Skoda have kept Tidemand in WRC2 so he can join WRC with them when they enter.

Oops meant Toyota wouldn't give up Latvala or Tanak, or M-Sport Ogier.

If Citroen is serious about sticking around then they could play the long game and invest in younger drivers. Ostberg can bring in points every rally, and Citroen can develop Breen and Lefebvre. In a while Lappi, Suninen, Tidemund, and Rovanpera could be available. I doubt that next season Toyota would be willing to give up Latvala, or M-Sport Tanak, or Hyundai any of their drivers.

    2020 FIA World Rally Championship

I don't quite agree about Latvala. There have been a fair number of times he's been in contention for a very strong finish and his car has just broken down since he went to Toyota. A fair number of times he's crashed out too but he would be looking much better points wise if those break downs hadn't happened. Yesterday's episode of the Absolute Rally podcast touched on this, how Latvala seems to suffer more breakdowns than Tanak, and how often his Polo broke down while Ogier's carried on. So at what point is it bad luck, and when is it driving style? The episode's discussion of Meeke post-Portugal was almost painful to listen to. Can't wait for next week's now.
