Sure. I gave this video the whole treatment with the Sega Rally crowd noises, co-drivers "woah!", finish and Game Over tunes. Even remade the original logo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZXoLKxhy3Q

Frightening noise when you're not expecting it.  My girlfriend's parents live out in the sticks outside Peterborough, and a Lancaster bomber sometimes flies over head, really low, due to there being several RAF bases nearby. Now that is a frightening noise, but wow, so immense.  That'd be the BBMF chaps from RAF Coningsby. Acquainted with a few through Twitter. One of the guys who flew the Spitfire and Hurricane a few years ago was the same guy that took James May up in a Eurofighter Typhoon. There's only two airworthy Lancasters in the world and the other one is in Canada (though it did make a visit last year for some amazing photo ops. First time Lancasters had flown in formation for over 50 years.) Then all 3 Avro Sisters got together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEV5i-Kw4qI Sadly all over now. XH558 has now flown more hours than any other and has gone too far into the realm of uncertainty when it comes to airframe life. Maintenance support has been withdrawn, so she's grounded forever and will be relegated to fast taxi runs. Anyway

It can absolutely be appreciated, but not so much... understood or felt (if you'll pardon how pretentious that sounds). It may not become instantly ingrained on your mind and recognisable, especially if its not really a deep passion. See, I can post this here video of an Avro Vulcan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqA6bgFPGWI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8rVwhnjBr4 And that sound might not really blow away a car fan. :) A true appreciation for nuance is, I feel, directly related to a persons passion for the subject. I like racing games and by extension a number of cars, but they aren't a deep seated part of my life as it were.

I never really did either, but it's pretty much your only option if you want to drive a nice looking Quattro E2 or a barely ok Corolla WRC with modern graphics. That poor, poor overlooked car. I would rather drive a poorly modeled E2 that has the right sound, than a perfectly rendered car that doesn't sound right. I personally find the incorrect sound paired to a car a much bigger immersion breaker than graphics: especially when the car in question is one of (if not the) greatest sounding competition car of all time! I appreciate I may be in the minority with that point though, as many seem to put preference on graphics. That's a fair point with regards to sourcing a car to record. Sure they could have found an inline 5 cylinder engine to record somewhere in Japan though...  For the E2, there were only 20 cars and they are all in Europe (not all in one piece either) So that's almost certainly going to be a bit of compromise in there such as using an engine that wasn't full E2 500hp spec. http://www.ableitet.no/twentyS1/twentycars.htm Obviously it could be better, but the list of the 'premium' high-detail cars in GT6 was around 200, so even that's a lot to try and record properly. With myself, I've never had the pleasure of hearing these cars in real life, nor have I watched a truly substantial amount of videos, so there is a certain amount of ignorance being bliss. I'm a little more attuned to turbojets and turbofans than cars.  :p

Suppose it's worth remembering Polyphony are in Japan. Codies have enough trouble trying to record the handfull of cars in the game despite being based in Europe, where most of the rally teams are based and where there is a healthy number of these cars in collectors hands that are candidates. To make it remotely economical for Polyphony to fly to Europe to record cars, they'd have to be able to record a lot of cars at once, and that's a tall order for things like rally cars and a bit of  a logistical nightmare to try and arrange.

Sound has been a huge weakness ever since the game left the original Playstation. It's kind of understandable though. With so many cars, and engines, it'd not practical to record all of them and if some cars were properly recorded, it'd be all the more jarring when driving anything else.

Funny thing is that rally in GT doesn't feel as bad as it might look in gameplay, especially chase came. Yet the way the cars move on gravel in a replay actually looks pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoqSGyOpilI

If it was made up, Paul and CM would be taking it very seriously, not joking around. So would VW. Lawyers would probably be involved. Calling it a Polo R WRC is, of course, impossible. Calling it, say... "Polo Rally" would be fine. An official licensed product doesn't strictly gain exclusive use of the cars. For example, Codemasters have the official FIA F1 license. They gained this around 2008 and they released F1 2009 for the PS2 and Wii in 2009. F1 2010 was released at the end of 2010. At the same time, Gran Turismo 5 was released and featured the Ferrari F10, Ferrari's car of the 2010 season. Gran Turismo 5 did not have any kind of FIA F1 license, though it did have an official FIA WRC license as part of the Sebastian Loeb Challenge, so the cars could actually be called WRC cars. This was also the same year Milestone released their first WRC game, so yeah, two games were released at the same time that had the FIA WRC license. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XebGceFe93g As you can see, the car is listed as the C4 WRC and the WRC logo is on the side of the car. That's not to say DiRT Rally has gained a WRC license, it's just an example to how complicated the whole thing can potentially be. Car makers are asked to respect the license of an official race series, but I don't believe they are strictly obliged to follow it.

His Top Gear appearance and tribute are also some of the few things that haven't been culled from Youtube. (For some reason the 2nd half of the vid is just the 1st half again without sound) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTwjnt1nbrs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQdAwuZXAWc

How about the R5 Maxi Turbo? That was quite a handful if I'm not mistaken. Lots of power (345 BHP) on the rear wheels of that short wheelbased Renault. Only one man ever really mastered that one: Jean Ragnotti. This. The R5 was just bonkers. Ahem You deleted it out of the quote, lol!

^ In addition to that, both Paul and Hatward, at the very least have been lingering around in here, dropping a few likes and lols here and there. If there was absolutely nothing to this, you would think they would be rather quick to shoot it down and say it's fake, especially if it were to associate their product with a vehicle they didn't have permission to use. That would be pretty bad times for them.

It's still normal for games to include a disc AND code. Installers tend to compress the files a lot compared to the unpacked game or, since Steam is required to activate and play the game, the disc contains a chunk of data and the rest is downloaded (that's the case with Fallout 4). The code can of course be redeemed to download the whole game. Quite a few times I've bought a PC game cheaper from Amazon than Steam, redeemed the code and download it having never taken the disc out of the case. Pretty sure the bulk of DR could be made to fit on two discs. MGS5 was a rare example where the dual layer DVD only contained a 5mb Steam installer, mainly because Konami were working on the PC version right until the last moment. A result of bringing its release day forward to being in-line with the console date (and something the staff gave up their post-gold holiday to do). There was nothing on the disc because the game literally wasn't ready. PS4 and XB1 are Blu-Ray. A single Dual-Layer Blu-Ray disc is around the 50gb mark. The physical PC version of GTA 5 comes on 7 discs.

Amazon Germany. http://www.amazon.de/Codemasters-DiRT-Rally-PC/dp/B0183FLACU/ Not sure about the date though. Assuming it would actually have a disc with the game and not just a steam installer and code, then DR would have to be released to manufacture by around the end of this week/beginning of next week.

Any car that's in the game, + the Quattro E2 and be discounted. Porsche is not in the running. Really don't think Toyota is in the running, otherwise the hill climb Celica and Tacoma could have had a shout. Not sure about the Renault 5 or Alpine. I can't really think of other cars that would have such a bad reputation. To be honest, hard to imagine one more difficult than the 037 (one of my earliest guesses) and the Delta S4. The 205 Pikes Peak was an utter hell car with v1, but apparently that's not it either.

The list of possible cars that can be #ThisCar is very small. I mean come on, something more difficult to drive than Quattro? The list is basically limited to Group B spec cars only, and most of them we already have. And yet we still don't know. :) There's also hill climb and obscure prototypes. We just have to take Paul's word for it that all the guesses thus far have been wrong. But feel free to put together a full list and tweet it to Paul asking if its somewhere on there!

Nooope. Whether the Polo is real or not, it's already been confirmed #ThisCar wasn't going to be in Winter Wonderland.

I think we played a vastly different game then. Guess it's down to opinion: as @Didzis said DiRT 2 had all the joint events and the voices mid-race, that was dropped for DiRT 3. Thankfully DiRT 2 did allow you to mute most of the crap. Not that DiRT 3 was perfect. I rather disliked Christian Stephenson before DiRT 3, but I fucking hate him now he has told me to "UPLOAD THAT CLIP TO YEW TUBE BRO" several hundred times. Sadly DiRT 3 did not come with a mute Christian Stephenson option. Have to agree with you. Yeah, DiRT 3 still had some annoying menu voices, the 'ooo toob' and such, but DiRT 2 had a whole line up of drivers chatting and taunting mid-race, bobbleheads on the dash, things hanging from the mirrors, a way more dude-bro soundtrack and a whole OSD that was meant to look like a can of Monster Energy.

Lack of cars in general.  No Lancia. At all. No Peugeot. At all. No Audi. At all. No Celica. It commited the error of being a rally game (kind of) which didn't feature a single one of the Sega Rally Triumvirate. Was as close as we got to DiRT: Impreza and Lancer Edition. Have to figure a fair chunk of the budget went to Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, Tanner Foust, Dave Mirra and the soundtrack.

You mock, but DiRT 2 did actually have things like bobbleheads for the dash and dice to hang from the mirror.

Dirt Rally uses the EGO 3.0 and F1 2015 the EGO 4.0. EGO 4.0 must be some kind of updated version of 3.0 you'd think. I wonder why it wouldn't work though. If someone could explain it to me in layman's terms.  Yeah, that's what we thought a few months ago. It isn't actually accurate.
