didnt play dead space i still have the day 1 purchase of the retail copy on my desk :p

sorry but the menu system and immersion is just a waste to me. the immersion starts when im racing / rallying . not when im in a menu trying to find for ten minutes the buttons i want to use. the quicker it is to get in game the more fun you will have . unless they putting tetris in while you swap your options around.

to me some of the games you suggest that had bad UI are the better ones. dirt rally click click rallying.enough of what i need to see in. Dirt 4 was not great still stuff i think where is it after hundreds of hrs of playing it.
Question, do you play in cockpit view? Do you use the floating hud speedometer?

Dirt Rally has lots of unnecessary sub menus that I often forget where things are and yet again, the tile system pretty always proves to be a bad design choice. It just never works well. The hud in Dead Space IS the character which removes screen clutter.
Sorry that you think the Naughty Dog titles have super cluttered and confusing main menus and menu systems, even though it's the simplest easiest thing in the world.
Anything dudebro hoonigan gymkhana related is just cringeworthy in my book.
    Agreed. Long Live DiRT 2.

This is a cool title screen too. Could just do silhouettes of cars in the background or something I don't know.

    It's a matter of presentation.

Meanwhile, in Forza Horizon 4, guess what's making an appearance?

Guess who else is making an appearance? Some weird DBag hipsters in skinny jeans! I think people should start a petition to make games just put in a normal looking dude with normal hair and normal clothes.

...also take a look at the cluttered tile menu where things don't really align so you can't actually just go to what you want directly.
Jeez, that escalated quickly! I didn't post that picture to promote FH4 or to imply FH4 was better, or anything of the sort. I was just pointing out some cool rally cars in other games that, maybe, we'll end up seeing in DiRT. Like when someone pointed out the Citroen C3 in The Crew 2.

No need to get defensive and aggressive about it.

EDIT: Although I do agree about the chicken suits. They are ridiculous. But there is plenty of normal attire as well.
Ehhh, I mean Forza also had Porsche when no one else did. And I think GT has Toyotas. Although there was a year that Forza inexplicably had no Volkswagens, even though it was just like... the Rabbit and an old Beetle.

I mean, hey, at least Dirt doesn't have you driving around looking like that. The chicken suits are "fun" and cooky, but I didn't see many "normal" attire. A lot of skinny jeans, skirts, loafers, smoking jackets, fake mustaches... The default guy though just looks... like a Dbag. The Crew 2 is copying it pretty hard too.
I drove a car in real life dressed as a chicken once. You get noticed!
I wore a cow suit to high school for no particular reason. Never on Halloween though.
Still won't ever wear skinny jeans and an ascot with a bellybutton shirt though.

please no. its not looks you want. its functionality !!!!

that dead space pic has my rage building. Dirt 2 ui was one of the worst ever made by codemasters. what am i even hearing. :#

still dont get why you think dirt 4s is a great system either.

you shouldnt be looking at a system for long if it works clincal as you will already be in game with such a great working system !

dont get why everything has to be 3d flashy over the top. make it the exact opposite and work.many older games did this . you could argue they were limited but by limited it becomes actually better as you do the best of what you can on a limited basis . so it isnt overly done.

also looking at the colin mcrae 2.0 screen and how easy that would be to use with a wheel is perfect.minimum effect no fuss.

    function over looks.

Obviously you haven't played Dead Space. That in game menu works perfectly, and there's zero reason it would be slow or cumbersome. It's grid based.
Dirt 1 and 3 had completely plain menu systems and it was still slow and sucked to try and navigate.

You're REALLY missing the point. I'm not asking for form over function, I'm asking for form AND function.
Dirt 2's menu was a neat idea and I can't figure out how to tell you for the hundredth time that they did it in a poor and ineffective way that was slow and cumbersome. There's no reason that they couldn't take a similar approach but also speed up or just remove transitions altogether. The entire point of video games is to immerse you in something. A boring static image with a menu that still isn't great (HZD, DiRT1, DiRT 3, DiRT Rally, RBR, etc.) takes you out of the immersion and still has a crap menu.

They could put the main menu at a desk with a bunch of papers on it, and on the papers would be the menu options. Fast, snappy, more than a boring menu image, and when you select a race you can leave and travel to the location. It would add NOTHING to it being cumbersome since it loads anyway. I still kind of like Dirt 2's snapshot and zoomout to a world map while it was loading.

You could also look at Naughty Dogs The Last of Us and Uncharted series.

Wow. Something to help get you immersed, that's generally regarded as some of the best opening menus, full 3D scene, and woo! It's SO clunky and unusable.
A static menu system that instantly transitions? Uses only a vertical grid based system instead of a bunch of random squares and tiles and floating text everywhere? THIS GAME SUCKS! How can anyone traverse these?

Maybe the in game menus could be less annoying.

Oh, NO! it's a real time menu that's grid based and super smooth and fluid and easy to navigate? HOW DARE THEY!

(Also, Dead Space at release was highly praised by... everyone for having an amazingly simple, immersive, real time menu and HUD system UI that doesn't take up too much screen space for ugly things.)

As far as flash goes, there's Persona 5 as well with super quick and snappy menus

I played that game for over 100 hours and never once thought it was a bad, clumsy, clunky, slow, menu system/

  5. It's clean, I'll give it that. But so is an operating room and I don't want to stare at that for 40 hours.
I mean... the V-rally isn't that bad actually. Just some ugly fonts, icons, and a weird slant with a blue filtered background image.
I really hope this devolves into a 15 page discussion about game menu designs. Honestly it's super important and not nearly enough thought goes into it.

I think Horizon Zero Dawns in game menus are pretty trash.

For a game boasting GORGEOUS visuals, and Aloy having a hologram thing on her head, why is the in game menu this boring static gradient image with some music? Why not just take the same information and overlay it using her hologram thing in world? Every time you open the menu or the map it just sucks the immersion out entirely.

I like the Dirt 4 pre-race menu, it's got a nice live background, (kinda like Dirt 2.... jus sayin... cuz it was cool) but it's still easy to navigate and get's you in the mood of things. I do kind of feel like they could've made it more Dirt 2 like and start the game in a trailer, motel, hotel, tent, whatever, then "travel" to the location to get the same pre-race menu.
There's a lot of super boring menu systems out there with seemingly very little thought put into them. I HATED DiRT 1 and 3's floating boxes on white. It's so... boring and lifeless, and way too sterile for a game called DiRT.

*Edit This is what the HZD in game menu should be.

CMR2.0 is an absolute masterpiece of its time. Still play it on occasion.
Last rally game I remember with actual thunderstorms in it.
It might be a fantastic game, but it's box art and menu system are terrible.
It's like I "made" a website for our shop and I had to convince my mom and dad that a colored background was a bad idea.

loeb needs to go back to pikes as his record was beaten.
And by 16 seconds! The new record was set by Volkswagen Motorsport with the VW I.D. R Pikes Peak, 4WD full electric with 680 hp. Dumas made it to the top in 7:57.148.
And that is some serious speed, no doubt. Since the road was paved cars look more and more like LMP prototypes, but this allows for greater downforce and speed, so I don't think the hillclimb has become less dangerous or interesting than the recent future...
Full electric means it's not susceptible to altitudinal loss of power. Cheaters.

  8. SLRE is unplayable for my 51 year old ass................lol.And the sounds !!!!!!!! wow

maybe ill fire it up again.I tried to really enjoy Loebs early FWD cars ,but besides some decent looking country road sections on some few stages ,this game does not have an intuitive handling model.

Oh, come on! Ass and hell are fine but not crap? c rap isn't allowed? What are we? 5?
Pretty sure I've seen F get past the censor.

  9. @JZStudios in fairness to Milestone, and at the same time scolding them for constantly doing the same with all their releases, the Gravel demo is an old build. The current release version is light years ahead in physics, FFB, sound and graphics.
Hmm. Guess it at least has a demo at all. The snow track just felt real sluggish and the AI were absolutely on rails. One of them managed to hit some weird bump and barrel roll over me, which was cool.
BTW when did crap become a censorable word? The forums auto sensor is a bit weird sometimes.

Arcades are made to be easy to drive and often don't have much to do with actual physics, while Simulators try to recreate the way a car drives in real life. How close they get is a different question.

Not true. Grid 2 is massively more difficult than Grid Autosport. As it interact more with weight balancing while the other is more about controlled understeer. Number are still off, but I suppose Autosport rely more on realistic value. Although both use real mathematical physic.

You get the extreme side of the sim like rfactor, ac, iracing, RRRE with more simulation value & real numbers to play with like tire heat, advance setup, telemetry(which you can also do with arcade style), etc, but the driving experience is still placebo.

Referring as more or less realistic racing experience is probably the better sentence to use & point out what seem not so realistic.

@JZStudios once claimed that sim racing is BS which is 100% true in a way in my perception. Simulator are still in research at the actual moment & even full size apartment computer doesn't simulate a racing car in an effective way to make a driver with no experience being on part with real pro on the first try. Although transition from a racing videogame title to another one is effective, if you understand the driving model.

I'm still updating my sim introduction guide using AC (beware, lot of rants about sim elitism).

Anyone that has time to waste & see ways to improve it, PM me.
The problem is that cars are super complex. There's a lot of touching moving surfaces, and almost nothing is actually static. Things also change with heat, climate, altitude, etc.
Plane sims are pretty close though, there's a lot less to actually simulate.

Interesting comments from Andrew Coley during the World Rallycross Qualifying 2 livestream. He mentioned Dirt 4 and looking forward to seeing more (or words to that effect).

Maybe idle chat, or perhaps a hint at what's to come?
Clearly he just wants another slice of the Pizza and burgers.
And maybe some of the Queztalcoatl urgaffel was talking about

I know DiRT will go on, it's just a game after all.  But man games like these are only made so often, where as a fan and a player the team makes us all count for something and feel included.

Everyone has different personalities and ways of going about their job.  I think Paul took a lot of the community home with him and took to heart how we felt about the games.  He loved rally since he was a kid, grew up gaming and eventually landed his dream job of Desinging rally games, probably some of the best.

He he will be sorely missed, I hope he continues persuing his dreams and passion.
Agreed, I know he's been silent lately, but what about the forums?
    Who's left now?

I don't know what this is about, but it sure is impressive what a 1080ti or Titan can render in real time in an exceptionally small static environment.

Sebastien Loeb plays Dirt... AHA! Codies has actually bought Milestone and are now developing Loeb Rally 2! ;-)

Might even be a duel title between the two masters... "2 Dirty Sebastians".
    "2 Sebastians, 1 Cup"?
And here I actively avoided saying that.

  15.  i know it probably wont happen , but really its such a no brainer from a consumer standpoint.Release the sim in its infancy, slowly build it with customer feedback and everyone is happy as "we ' all created it .Tack on DLc on top of the "base" game and keep add ons coming to guarantee longevity.
Meh, then you run into the pricing schemes of things like Raceroom and iRacing.

As a fan of his, I appreciate the inclusion of Craic, but am disappointed at the lack of Jeff Bridges and Kebab.
*edit, Craic and the Kebab have been adressed, but I still miss ol' Porky.

    Hmm, hello Meeke's WRC C3 in The Crew 2 (at 16:35): https://youtu.be/9Dea_09hKhI
The Crew 2 also has the Red Bull RB13 from 2017 in it too! In a series that amusingly is called Alpha Grand Prix lol
All I can say about The Crew 2 is... I wouldn't look that forward to it.
I picked up the first one as the free game of the month on Xbox live, and after playing it for half an hour I realised why it was free and never played it again
Eh, I don't know when it went free, but they have overhauled the entire graphics and physics systems since launch, so at least they're dedicated to it, which is cool. It's fun enough to "explore" the map, and could be fun with friends, but otherwise it's fairly lackluster and soulless.
What's wrong with The Crew 2? The first one felt like a lightweight Test Drive Unlimited with a poor storyline shoehorned over it, but this one is all racing, and looks phenomenal lighting-wise.
I will say the graphics are a bit enhanced, the load times are quicker, and a couple other neat features like switching vehicle types on the fly are present (Though I still think it would be cool to at least switch from road to dirt spec like the original Crew trailer showed) but the boats and planes don't add much. I've only played the 2 betas... or maybe one was an alpha, with a third coming up at the end of the month, but the weird physics are definitely still present, and at the time of the last beta wheel support was terrible.
TLDR: If you like the first one, go for it. Otherwise it's very much the same, just perhaps a bit more stable.

Whatever happens next, I hope that if they keep the WRX license we get all the tracks this time. COTA probably wouldn't even be that hard to implement, they already have it modeled for Grid Autorsport.
That would depend on if they want to update it. Not sure how good it is in Autosport. If they decide to update it, it would require a fair amount of work.
