  1. The thing I find most interesting about the dirt show is when Paul said they spent more time with the Solbergs and Cooper on WRC, which would be super cool if there was... more content. Obviously the main focus in D4 currently is in rally, so it would've been better if they spent more time with the Meeke. Rallycross and Landrush are fun and all, but with the severely limited content I sort of feel like too much time was dedicated to a minority...
And I'm still butthurt about the rather paltry Landrush...
So what's happening with DiRT 5?

Water is probably the water shader, not the splashes since they are actually particles.
Hmm.. the water didn't look much different to me either. Oh well, I'll just leave it on low I guess.

WRC 5 and WRC 6 also have this method of separating input devices. You can have separate settings and assignments for controller and wheel. While it does seem counter-intuitive at first, I am glad that Codies has also implemented this and would like to see something similar in Project CARS 2 and other racing games. Here is why I think it is important to have everything separated:

In DiRT Rally, if I ever booted up the game on my PS4 without the wheel plugged in, I lost all of my wheel settings and button assignments. My wheel is stowed in the TV cabinet so I only set it up if it's gonna be a one hour + gaming session. What I could never do with DR was whip out my controller real quick to knock off a daily event for credits, for example. Loading DR with the wheel unplugged meant configuring the wheel from scratch later on. Really annoying.

I think Codies is on to something here, and I like it.
    Hmm, well 2 things;
    1. We don't talk about those abominations here
    2. I never had that problem with DR. It always saved my wheel setup switching back and forth from controller. Pretty sure it also had controller settings you could save, which would also fix that problem. I agree it could be useful, but it's funky, and I don't like that I have a separate menu for my pedals, wheel, and keyboard. If I ever get the shifters USB cable so I can use 7th gear it would add a 4th menu I'd need to use. Just being able to save presets and have everything in one menu would work fine.

Adds it to the list for future reference

    • Koalas
    • Fireflies
I don't understand how you did Australia without Koalas. Please tell me you got Kangaroos at least... or some crocs in some water hazards?

On a separate topic, I'm now grateful that when I switch into a sequential gearbox I don't need to change the controls. This is mitigated however by now needing to go into the menu to switch from h-patter+clutch to sequential. I guess I'm just glad I don't have to do both?
Can we get that feature of realistic shifters added back in @KickUp ?

Yeah, I'm not sure. I was sitting around 45-50 FPS and it was running pretty smooth for me. Sorry.
    I'm jealous!

My framerate is just peachy at ~100, yet the frametimes spike from 10ms to 100ms+.

    Sad times.

I also ran through all the graphics settings, so you might want to try that too. The blending could cause some issues, as well as the shader settings being too high. There's also the video options menu or something that allows you to change the AA which can sometimes cause issues depending on the type used. Why the AA isn't with all the other graphics options I'll never know.
Continuing to think about it, if you haven't tried vsync, I'd suggest doing so, may or may not help. I also had some SERIOUS issues with stuttering in AC, I have a 144hz monitor, and even at 144fps taking a turn would look like screen tearing Lego block stop motion. It was like half a second per frame at 144 fps. Turned out it was somehow because my Nvidia control center was set to override the 3D application.. so maybe that's it? But it never had an issue with Dirt.

  4. Glad to hear it's all working for you now! :)
I agree on the menus, some of it I believe is in part to do with consoles, but nevermind, you kind of get used to it.

And yes I believe the controls now allow the simultaneous use as you say :)
I forgot to test it. :p That'd be super nice since the biggest benefit of the Fanatec SQ over the Thrustmaster one (besides it being better in every way) is the fact that you flick one switch and its in SQ, where the TM takes like a 3 minute disassembly. I think the TM has the SQ as it's own buttons though, so you don't have to rebind it... trade offs.
Loving the game, but yeah, navigating the menus feels like I'm experiencing someone else's hangover.
That and not being able to reassign all of my wheel's buttons (especially the menu buttons. w t f is that?)

I'm also getting this awful frametime spike every 3 seconds that only exists in Dirt 4.  :/  Wish I knew how to remedy it.
Yeah, I'm not sure. I was sitting around 45-50 FPS and it was running pretty smooth for me. Sorry.

I'd assume @urgaffel would know, what does the water setting actually do? I ran through the puddle on Dirtfish a few times on ultra and low and nothing seemed to change. The spray and drops on "camera" looked visually identical and the FPS was as well.
I also appreciate how the trees goes straight from medium to ultra low. Which is great, because I didn't want to use low anyways.

I'd like to be the first to give an official "I'm butthurt as all hell." Seriously, I had so many issues in the first 5 minutes I'm genuinely really irritated. I elaborated more in Bears Happy place, but since the devs don't read there for fear of getting lost in good feelings, the summary is "My wheel which worked perfectly in DR is rendered fairly useless now, and I really don't appreciate it."
Damn, there's no angry face emoji to show my true feelings.
I'd like to be the first to give an official apology. Apparently I am dumb, but to be fair your menu system is convoluted beyond all reason, None of the other games I've ever played had separate control settings/binding menus for every single piece of equipment. This could be useful, but holy crap is it counter intuitive. All the other games I've ever tried just put everything in one menu, not three, all with their own settings. And it still doesn't change the fact that I was thrust into the game from the get go with completely borked controls, which I'm never a fan of.
As to something I'm curious about, I have the Fanatec SQ shifter and I noticed that it shares the SQ up/downshift with the paddles. The SQ up/downshift is also the same as 3rd and 4th gear, so does that mean I can now finally seamlessly transition from h-pattern to SQ without having to rebind the shifter? Because if so I'll love you long time.
I apologize @KickUp I will promptly clean the poo off your office building doorstep.

    Ok you devs are insane.

Halfway through a night stage and the headlights start flickering on and off. Then Nicky says something about fixing them next stage or whatever.
    Then they just go out!!
Oh! They're back on! Nope. Out again! ****!!

You're going to give someone a freakin' heart attack. >:)
    Be Fearless ;)
Don't cut comes to mind too.

Awesome. I spotted a flock of bright green parrots fly across me in Australia at sunset today.
    Love these details.
    Ahem! That would be budgies.
I'm so glad we call them by the proper name of "Bird" in America. I'd also assume they are parrots and not birds like parakeets...

Well I just fell victim to @urgaffel 's Revenge.
An extremely low-flying drone took my concentration away long enough for me to roll the R2 Fiesta.

    7 times.
    Nice roll :D

I look forward to people finding the real easter eggs :)

    Here's the roll.
The PS4's record function is a great feature.
What I find interesting is how far down the road you go before rolling. How confused did it make you?

water drops on windshield are... improper. With repellents widely used, waterdrops would travel easly upwards, cleaning the windshield, improving visibility. Yeah, I know it would require additional codding and taking speed vector into account.
Have you ever been inside a car during heavy rainfall?
I disagree Pork. If you look at the top in front of the tinted sticker the water does sort of just sit there. I personally don't really care, but it does sort of look like globs of hot glue that don't really move much.

  11. Personally realistic damage has never much bothered me. I like to think that I don't ever have to see a wrecked car if I drive well.
I've said it before, but racing down a tight windy section in BeamNG is way more intense because if you step out of line even a little you're done for. There is no bouncing off the curb, it tears the wheel off your axle, there is no deflecting off a tree, you're wrapped around it. D2 had that kind of feeling to some extent. And watching glorious crashes from multiple angles over and over and over again...

The game is out this week so y'all will be able to see how good/bad it is and how close/far we got to your expectations and how realistic/unrealistic the damage/handling/environment/lighting/rendering/surfaces is.

So let's just... you know... relax (for now) :D

I don't believe you. The weather there is way too crap for pools. Besides I have a pool and, well...

The ONLY grip (;)) I have with crashes is damage other than visual. I hope on hardest level, the one you have to unlock,  crashes will be less forgiving. I saw people hit trees with a front of the car pretty hard, they were able to finish the stage with no problems. Also body deformation is really hard to do, would rather have other aspect of D4 refined. For me they are more than good enough. Maybe RX guys would like more due to the nature of RX races.
Have you seen the erased citizens gameplay from a couple weeks ago? They made the mini cooper end up onto a tree at pretty low speed and had to retire, without even too much previous damage if I remember correctly, which videos have you watched with people ending up on a tree and getting away with it?
watch my video at the end with the escort mk2.i thought that crash was brilliant :D

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it8lrZLJ0I8
:/ All this really told me is the body panels pop off in really weird way. Maybe there is a bit of deformation, but it could also be scripted like GTA's. It's unfortunately not the D2 level I was hoping for.

I'm thinking a lot of the comments will be from people who are used to DR thinking there's too much grip by comparison.
    ...
Maybe opinions will change when everyone's had a while to get used to the game.
That's my feeling as well. It's going to feel different from Dirt Rally because it's different from Dirt Rally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it's better and most people who have played it think it's an improvement (like Porkhammer and dgeesi0). Doesn't mean everyone will love it because you can't please everyone :D

(also, preconceptions play a part, e.g. this isn't what I expected it to be, therefore it's not as good)

All I know is, in DR I basically actively avoid Germany, Pikes Peak, and Sweden. I mainly suck at Sweden, but I couldn't ever get the hang of Germany or PP, the physics just didn't match what the wheel was throwing out.
So if I don't avoid Tarmac like the plague then it's an improvement.

But the players car(s) must be saved anywhere else, I mean the ones that the player can edit himself in the branding suite...
Maybe it's easier to find/edit them...
Because the branding suite liveries are essentially a set of values, I believe they aren't really saved anywhere as a livery they are just a few bits of data. This means that when you load into a multiplayer race with 7 other players using their own branding suite liveries the system can display those opponents on your machine without a massive download.
So... could we potentially swap out the logos for different/higher res ones?

So @Porkhammer . I was looking through a number of your videos on YouTube and saw in one of the comment threads where you said the game almost had to much grip. How would you rate it compared to dirt rally in that aspect?
Grip levels are completely different, kind of hard to compare them. I just feel the butt of the cars in Dirt 4 should kick out more, especially during handbrake turns.
I see, other than that do the physics and handling model feel like an improvement over dirt rally? Or is it to early to really give a solid opinion?
    Massive improvement.

I just love the cars' weight and aerodynamics, and how they interact with the road. I love the new damage system too. I had an... interesting weekly, to say the least. Best virtual rally experience I've ever had. That could never happen in Dirt Rally.
Awesome, hearing that from the best just reinforces the hype. Next Friday can't come soon enough.

Just one more question. How has the co driver been now that you've played for awhile? Any noticeable sync issues?
My only issue thus far has been a couple of late calls. It's a pleasure listening to both the welsh wizard and the Horsey woman.
Hey! You be nice to her, she's a wonderful lady!

  16. Right, I can't stand it anymore! Anyone who lives in Colombia and has a sim rig to test it out once it's released?
Or maybe someone that lives in California? I'll be travelling around there the last two weeks of July.
It's going to be unbearable seeing everyone enjoying themselves for two months while I'm sitting here reading and watching clips!
    Basically cyber torture!

    I'm in Arizona....

    The 205 GTI in Sweden:
That looked like fun! As someone who could never get comfortable in Sweden in DR, I hope the handling improvements can help me out a little.  :D

Looks like that car doesn't have a gear indicator. What about people like me who use no HUD and sequential? Am I going to have to learn how to actually count my gears?  :o
No... You just shift up on straights when the engine makes a loud vroomy vroomy noise, and shift down on corners when it gets quiet and its fuzzydropums become fuzzyupums.
