I would assume it will deped on the difficoulty level you choose.

But I have a different question @KickUp many rallygames are very geared towards the player having to win every single rally to progress. Dirt Rally fixed that problem somewhat since you won money even if you didn't win. Is DiRT4 continuing in that same direction? I think not striving to get first can really help with the mentality of the players in the long run.

With regards to the AI difficulty you will be able to find a challenge more appropriate to your skill.

I really really agree with KingOfCoins here. One of the reasons I've invested so much into DR is that it was unforgiving - very very difficult to beat the top AI times, but i could still progress without winning. It trained me into getting over my need to win everything and taught me how to just enjoy the journey of improving - and when I saw improvement it was insanely satisfying.

Is the handling mode and the AI difficulty separate options?
And are AI times still spread out in the earlier events and tighter in the later events like in DR, or am I going to find it much easier to beat the top AI times early on in D4?

I have similar feelings on that subject. I don't mind "losing" in video games. It's penalties for losing that annoy me - specifically: the inability to progress & experience the game in its entirety.

Many games have much of their content & experience "locked" (for lack of a better word) behind requirements for winning, and I simply can't always win (or I don't have all the time needed to win as many levels/events as games require to progress). It bugs me when games show off & sell a bunch of content that many customers may never get to experience simply because they can't "git gud" enough (or devote endless amounts of time) for that content to become available to them in-game.

For example: some car/motorsport games advertise huge rosters of exotic cars to drive - but they don't tell you that those cars cost more in-game currency than you could ever hope to earn, and you may only get access to 20% (or less) of all those advertised cars (unless you grind away for the next 97 years of your life just to save up enough in-game currency to buy/unlock all those cars).

I'm assuming you're talking about Forza and GT, since PC "sims" max out around 30 cars. And I'm pretty sure both of those games let you "borrow" cars. And I know Forza doesn't require you getting first to progress, along with being able to select your difficulty. Forza is also fairly quick to earn some cash. In a night of turning hot laps I managed to get about 1.5 million fun bucks.

Actually it's under 2 seconds. But who's counting anyway, eh? xD
Under 2 is still technically under 3, so I'm not wrong. :p

I'm all for electric cars. It's the future, and it'd be damn cool to see one developed that could rival petrol in performance.
I don't thin electric cars are the future... at least not with the inconvenience of batteries and the enviromental damage during battery-production (Li-Ion-Bats).
Fuel Cells, maybe, but it would require a new hydrogen supply network for everybody...

No. Honestly I believe the long term solution would be to keep hydrocarbonides (fuel) as our energy storage but change production from fossil-extraction to growing, preferable in the form of algae instead of crops to save valuable fertile land for food.

So, I think, at least until/if we can create compact nuclear-fusion cells for cars, the internal combustion engine will stay with us even if/when the fossil fuels run out. I have no fear of endurance-motorsport like rallies ever going all electric.
I haven't done a whole lot of research into fuel cells, but it seems like that may actually be the best option, but then people would complain about the harmful H20 greenhouse gases being exhausted. Apparently putting children in poisonous lithium mines in Africa makes them feel warm and snuggly though.

I'm not sure hybrids really work into rally to be honest. A lot of people think Rally is about the individual drivers skill. The only benefits from hybrids are faster starts, which are already pretty quick, and shift changes. I suppose I'm not opposed, but I don't see it necessarily being a big improvement on what's there.

  3. What might be interesting though is a combination of a petrol and electric motor, like the Mclaren P1 has.
That way they can use the electric motor inbetween stages and use both motors on the stages itself which will increase the amount of horse power.
That might be where the future is heading once the technology is a bit further along (extended range on the electric motor) and cheaper.
I wouldn't mind that. I'm actually looking forward to something like that. Wouldn't you?
I have no problem with the hybrids, but I'm not sure how well they'd work for RX. The performance hybrids use the electric motors for instant acceleration and speed through shifting, both of which are VERY minimal on RX cars. I bet it would work, but I don't know how much improvement it would have when they're already doing 0-60 in under 3 seconds.
The other thing is (Not really a problem for RX) batteries are SUPER heavy. For RX, being a sprint race they could get away with just a few batteries, but moving forward/into other motorsports the majority of weight would start to transfer over to batteries. There's also the problem of running them at 100% 90% of the time, which would drain them pretty quick. Active braking would help keep them charged for a bit, but I'm not sure how well something like an enduro race would hold up. Going into full electric... it'd have to have supercells to charge quickly enough in the pits... although I suppose a 13 hour pitstop in the middle of the race could be fun too. Supercells also tend to drain quicker than standard batteries, and I think they're shelf life is shorter. Not sure how much that means to a racing division though.

Again, doing a lot with electric motors, we'll have to wait and see how batteries improve. It'll eventually get to the point where it supercharges in a few seconds and lasts near forever, but where it's at now it's hard to get more than 40 minutes of flight time with a decent sized drone.

electric?????????????   Anything Rally should not contain a electric power plant.  Electric cars will completely lose my interest in the sport.
I'm with you on that one. Rally cars should make noise - the louder the better, not buzz around like insects in heat.
Exactly. The sound of a rally car is something special. As an example the Escort fanatics we have on this forum who share their memories about the sound of a BDA echoing in the forests back in 70's... I just can't imagine that in future people are telling stories about how someone's electric rally car was hissing in a forest  :|

I like variety. I grew up on stories of V16 BRMs and CanAm McLarens, but also of weird things like the Howmet and Rover turbine cars. The Audi diesels at Le Mans were fascinating to me, because they were competing with V12 Aston Martins.

Whilst I'm not a fan of the strict engine regs in modern rallying classes, I like how different the Ford and Peugeot R5 cars are today and it wouldn't offend me if one particular model was silent. However, a field of them would be immeasurably dull.

Also, silent rally cars would be incredibly dangerous. The only time I've felt scared at a rally was a near silent Land Rover course car flying round a corner near me. Electric cars could also be dangerous in the case of accidents, in the context of fans getting involved (although I'm happy to admit I'm no expert in this and if organisers told me otherwise I'd bow to their knowledge). Obviously, this doesn't necessarily affect rallycross, but that holds no interest to me!
That's actually a good point in the safety part. Along with that the danger of horrible fires would be quite high considering how many batteries are in them. Just try puncturing a phone battery and see the fire works. Same reason whenever you get anything shipped to you with batteries there are a crapload of warning labels on the side of the box saying beware if the box is damaged. Now imagine a car with the equivalent of thousands upon thousands of those batteries getting damaged. Won't go up quite as fast as the old group b cars with the fuel tank right next to the engine and turbo but still I would imagine the danger of fire would be quite a bit higher than what we have in modern rally and rallycross cars.
Hmmm... there are a few safety devices/bags and things you can put the battery in, but yeah, risk of 3000 degree fire is always there. Again, we do stuff with electric motors and we charge batteries in a ceramic plant pot just in case.
Stripping the sound out kind of reminds of a gun video, since I'm Americanese and can do that sort of thing. The guy was making fun of restrictions and how in the future instead of reviewing real guns he'd have to do airsoft, and how dumb it would be.

Working with electric motors a fair amount, they're not a great sound. The whole track would either be the sound of a cat fart or a high pitched whine.
Yeah, the absence of sound is what concerns me most @JZStudios. The technology seems very appropriate for rallycross but (to me anyway) ,a significant portion of the spectacle of rallycross comes from sound, especially in the case of the Supercars.

Electric Supercars would likely be as quick, but I don't think it will be as spectacular without the pops, bangs and turbo flutter.
It'd have to be like that electric BMW that pumps v8 sounds through the internal speakers.

I've been registering to new contest on CodinGame and seen this. What will they work on, hm?

    Open positions

Codemasters newest team in Cheshire is looking for talented and creative programmers to develop our next AAA game for console and PC. Combining Codemasters heritage in racing and Evolutions Studios success with Driveclub and Motorstorm you will become an essential member of an experienced development team. Open positions are:

    - Core Tech Programmer

    - Game Programmer

    - Rendering Tech Programmer

I'd almost be interested enough to pretend to be able to do any of that, except it's all programmer stuff, and I'm not that kind of crazy.

I'm really liking all the modern classes in D4. I'm excited about R2, and R5 also, but less so (I really like R2 cars for whatever reason). I think it'll make the atmosphere feel more like local rallies, instead of huge WRC events, which I like a lot. The FIA can go license a big flashy WRC game with all the official cars, but we all know how it'll turn out. I'd take a game with less cars that's made with care over a game with the newest cars that's been rushed any day.

This. Alot of people are making mistake with limiting their FPS at the same exact number of frames as their refresh rate is - it's a mistake. On some monitors it will be equal but most usually u need to aim into 2-4 frames more. In my case it's 64 FPS limit. No screen tearing, no input lag. Limited through Nvidia Control Panel (simple bat that imports profile on system autostart). It takes time but it's worth messing with to find the right combination for your rig.
I've tried a bunch of stuff with my rig, and the technique I posted works best for me so far. I assure you, there's no perceptible input lag. There may technically be *some,* but I can't feel it, even in shooters. I'll try what you guys suggested though. I think I remember trying it a while ago and it made things worse, but I'm not sure, I'll give it another go.

@RyuMakkuro I won't be switching GPUs any time soon. I'm specifically looking at 27" 1080p IPS monitors, I'd like to keep it around $150-170 so Gsync is purely a luxury. IPS is the main thing I can't do without. I don't think there are any Gsync IPS monitors that fit my criteria unfortunately, but like I said, it's just a luxury.
I've got some 24" Acers that are IPS and thin bezel for $130. Pretty sure they have the same style in 27 or so. At your price range IPS will be 60hz max...
(BTW, if you plan on going triple screen, thin bezels are AWESOME. Two side by side has a thinner bezel than your typical monitor.)

OFF TOPIC: An original RS200 Evo - and arguably the best prepared street RS200 - is now up for sale:

    http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/ford/rs200/1986-ford-rs200-evo-in-united-kingdom/246144/ad

    This is absolute automotive perfection...

    Its so pretty *___*

I have to ask though and forgive my ignorance if this is correct but it lists it as Front Wheel Drive, was this true for the street versions?
That description is incorrect @SirPhilMcKraken: all variants were 4WD. The little red lever you can see in the last photo is what controls the power split (50/50, 37/63 or full rear wheel drive).

In a lot of the road cars the linkage for this was either locked or completely removed: apparently a fully RWD RS200 was a bit of a handful!
For the longest time I thought this car was called the RS two thousand. Confused a lot of people... then I'd just stop talking.

Some Argentines hate the British. I, for one, love the British! Also the Falklands are all yours xoxo
Yeah, but the few hateful Argentinians ruin it for everybody. We've all seen how well Top Gear's Peace Keeping soccer trip went, due to a random number on the license plate.
I still think Soccer would've been bad anyways, seems to me like riots after matches are pretty common... so the boys would've had to lose.
That embarrassed me beyond belief. It's one of the reasons I so strongly make it clear I'm not one of them.
It's the few idiots who ruin it for everybody.
As a completely off topic example, we've been flying RC planes and drones for years. Recently DJI and some other Chinese companies started making them so cheap and effective that any idiot with a few hundred dollars could buy one. In turn, a lot of stupid people with money to burn snooped with cameras, flew where they shouldn't have (Private property, government facilities, AIRPORTS, etc...) So now the FAA got all prissy and mandated that every drone/plane/flying whatever needs to be tagged, and imposed all sorts of restrictions where they weren't needed before.
The few idiots ruined it for everybody.
It'd be like if a bunch of idiots decided they wanted to start rallying with no experience and just crashed left, right, and center racing through the middle of town, airports, government facilities, etc... and as a result rallying became even more restrictive than it is now and even harder to start into.

I'll miss the heavy gravel of Greece in D4.
But in the future, if you devs do a heavy gravel location similar to Greece, please do Sardegna!!
The stages are narrow with tons of hazards off the track and quite technical.
If they do a heavy Gravel Location as DLC it has to be either Azores or Argentina before anything else!
I'd icksnay the Argentina. They are British after all.

  12. So, uhh... I'm actually kind of glad the trophy trucks won't be able to be unleashed on rally stages. I just spent 30 minutes in D2 trying to get past the first corner without an AI forcing me into an outside rock, an inside rock, another AI, a roadside bush, or just spinning me out. Finally got started, the truck started to drive like a boat and required way to much input to not turn, which doesn't seem to affect the AI, of which caught up to me and promptly planted me in a conveniently placed wall.
I hate to be cynical, but I don't think that type of AI has been addressed, so as much as I'd love to "hot lap" the trucks on rally stages, I'm glad it won't be a career thing.

  13. Actually the most interesting thing about the article is the mention that BAJA Edge of Control HD is being remastered for current consoles. Huh.

Not sure how well that game has aged. At all.
Nor did I know THQ was still around.
Same here. I thought THQ died near the release of the 360 and ps3.
    Edit*
Apparently they did die around 4 years ago. For some reason an Austrian company took/bought/acquired the name from the (Apparently) now dead American company. When THQ died they held an auction for their property and Nordic also bought some of their IPs. Interesting.

I used to frequent PRC until their articles became pure moaning about iRacing and AC and Project Cars. Their opinion articles on every other racing game are pretty enjoyable though.
Ehh, yeah that's kind of true. The comments section also sucks cause of butthurts. I've never cared about iRacing, AC never seems to actually work properly and the devs suck, and PCars isn't the most realistic, but is the most stable for me.
Still, it can be fun to what new info pops up from time to time.

How long can that smug little face hold up the act?
