  1. So one of my friends thinks DiRT should've used updated RBR physics. Apparently you can't slide the car in DiRT  :|
Do they mean *they* can't slide the car in dirt?
That's what I said, but they said you have to drive twice as fast as you would in real life.
I have no problems sliding at all, even at low speed. They seem to need some practice! ;)

Yeah, but your magical skills of controlling virtual multiperson transportation systems is not a force to be challenged.

We wanted R4 cars but couldn't license the look of the models due to a lot of complexities in the licensing process. We had to take the version we had from DiRT3 and then set up the handling with the characteristics of the R4.

It is not ideal but the other alternative was to simply remove the car altogether from the game.
thx for the honest feedback Paul,
I somehow hate licensing , but it's part of the business nowadays..

Though I hope one day , we get an R-GT class with a Tut"heel" Porsheee 811 and then we finally all laugh about licensing  :p
I do think EA's licensing contract with Porsche is supposed to be ending soon, hopefully Porsche decides to not renew it and more games can finally stop using RUF's.

Don't think it's right for Rally, but I do think there is a place for properly done open world driving games.
Well, driving games aren't racing games ;) Or rather, they shouldn't be made into ones. First Driver games are a perfect examples of driving games, not racing games. TDU started mixing things, which is why I found those games utterly boring while I love first and second Driver. And I would say fictional makes it more interesting, as with non-fictional there's nothing... new. Or Unseen. Generally there's lack of things you don't expect to see. In other words, well executed fictional world will be more interesting than a non-fictional one. Thing is, non-fictional are easier to make, especially nowadays.

They put open world into Need For Speed games and turned them into "Need For Sales" games. Burnout Paradise being a great game, was a mediocre Burnout at best. Forza Horizon... well, haven't played that one from obvious reasons, but from what I can tell, only enjoyable physics saved the game basically. And then on the "Open World-less" side there's DriveClub and DiRT Rally, first being PS4 exclusive gets hate from xbone owners and #PCMasterRace for reasons rather obvious, while the game itself gets a hugely positive reactions from every trustworthy source basically. Second has become the holy grail of rally games, partly because there's no competition out there on any platform, but mainly because it's damn good ;)
I think you can see the pattern here easily ;)
I absolutely loved the first Forza Horizon. They scouted the world and came up with Colorado as having the best driving roads. I guess you could say it's not really a "racing" game, but the roads in that game felt like they were sculpted by masters of motorsport. Horizon 2 broadened the area and made it more open, but they seemed to lose that sensation of great driving roads. As far as fictitious places go, every game has an amount. You cant fully recreate an entire city or location, but you can do what Horizon did and (rather magnificently) capture the essence and sights, sounds, and feeling of the location. Not sure why you think Paradise was a mediocre entry, I wish they made another one.
I was really talking about (granted) the ps2 era days when all the free roam off road games were popular. Every location looked like either boring desert or boring forest, and there really wasn't anything interesting to do.

  4. Some of those ideas they have in there could be really cool. I kind of like the Forza Horizon idea, but all those open world off road games I've played get really boring and generic. It would have to be done excruciatingly well, but it could be awesome. I think they should go for an off road sim that has everything dirt 2 and 3 had. I think they need a sim game and an simcade game, kind of like Forza. Some of those options came way out of left though, rockcrawling? Really? There's like 150 southern hicks that do that, and they've never even heard of video games.

I could SWEAR they had a hillclimb update on the timeline that seems to have since been removed. I remember doing Pikes Peak, then checking if there would be any additions to it, and there was a planned addition of at least cars. Let's be honest, one track and three cars makes it kind of, well, boring. And I like PP.
Would love to see the PP stages (and reverse options) available for custom rally, but I believe either that or allowing rally cars in hillclimb mode will come at one point. Hopefully both.

However, I'm pretty certain there was never a 'hillclimb update' scheduled on the timeline. Personally, I'm glad for that as I prefer the rally content.
Well the funny thing is, to me it seems like they could do that fairly easily, but they've kind of said it's not happening. I feel like they released PP and everyone hates hillclimb so much for some reason that they basically pulled the plug on it.

On a side note, there's extra Hillclimb cars in the Noble Gases that they seem to have dropped entirely, or at least is no longer shown on the timeline, so I'm not sure how accurate this would be.
We won't see all of those cars on the list in the game obviously. It's a list of cars that the CM team wants into the game, and so a really good guideline for us to speculate about. Especially since all the cars that did end up in the game are also on that list. Say for example they couldn't bring 2/3 of the R1-R3 cars into it because of licensing issues, they wouldn't really bother with making a new class for just one car probably. I think it is pretty safe to say that they'll stay with all the classes that are currently in the game + the new R4 class and we'll mostly see additions to the existing classes from here on out.

Ford Focus RS should replace the Fiesta in the 2010s, and for the R4 should be the Lancer Evo X & IX, and also Impreza STi N14. Then the current 2010s Fiesta would be in the 2015s class, or just removed from the game, or perhaps they'll just leave it in the 2010s.
