DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Mind if I ask why? You're entitled to your views of course, not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious  I just hope this game to be more realistic than DR or RBR I think that is the case for sure. The question will rather be whether the difference is enough or not? And that will depend on each person so at the end for some it will while for some it won't.

It's quite simple. You undress, you guard your clothers. You're guarding, therefore you're doing something. You're doing something therefore the time flows faster for you. My mum got her phrases from her mother, so... it's some old school Polish pre-war stuff basically. That one is actually not that bad, some of the other stuff she tends to say... I feel like my brain is sucked out xD

As my mum usually says in those situations: "undress and guard your clothes" :D

Oh Lord Bahamut, now I feel blind instead of just old :D Thanks for pointing that one out.

"wut" at least sounds somewhat similar to "what", which is why it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out. But the "FTFY" can mean everything, starting with "For the flying yodelling" :D

FTFY ;) Wait, wut? Translation please. PS. I feel so old while being 25... why does the internet have to come up with those new and more stupid ways of shortening stuff?

I wish the old homologation rules would come back, the ones that allowed manufacturers to build some limited number cars purely to compete. You know, like the original Quattro, Nissan R390, M3 GTR E46 and quite a few more. We would once more see some awesome race cars for the streets.

It's not my native language as well :p I'm simply a grammar nazi xD Not really. I mean in terms of optimization and getting the most out of what you have, sure, but the main reason is, as always, dem moneyz. Console exclusives get backing from Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo. Now from who the PC exclusive titles will get backing? Intel, nVidia (I don't count AMD since they have issues staying afloat as it is)? And that's exactly why the multiplatform titles from big publishers look better on the PCs but even then they still look worse than the console exclusives, at least on the Sony side. The publisher will push for the best possible visuals on the consoles that can be achieved without spending ages on optimising, and the PC side will get higher resolution textures, shadows, better form of Ambient Occlusion, more particles etc. Essentially things that can be thrown in without spending too much resources. From what I can tell, only nVidia and Epic tries to push for better visuals in PC games. The former does it with GameWorks, the latter with Unreal Engine 4. However even though both provide support to the developers that use their tech, it's not the same as Sony/Microsoft sending in their own engineers to help with the development.

Hmmm... I always wonder why do a lot of people here say lightning instead of lighting? You guys have been playing Final Fantasy XIII a lot lately? Or maybe DriveClub in a thunderstorm? xD :D As to getting graphics, PC is one massive paradox. We get the most processing power and yet the games are horribly optimised, full of bugs (often weird ones), crash a lot and what not. And there's of course the "grandma's laptop" battalion nowadays known as #PCMasterRace which doesn't help things. On a more "on-topic" note (that's heresy here, I know), I don't like the whole "Fearless" thing. That is for me one massive BS. There's no such thing as not feeling fear. It's how our brains work, it's a part of us humans that we can't remove. The important part is to not let that fear influence our decisions in a wrong way. You should in fact try and control your own fear so that you can take advantage of it and know better where the limits are.

Well... not as incredible when you stack them against Gran Turismo Sport screens, but definitely awesome nevertheless. Now that is pure awesomeness right there. Excuse me while I go to the bathroom :D

Last time I checked, you don't need roads wide enough to allow overtaking, nor tracks that have good enough flow to a point where they can be replayed thousands of times and more. You don't need to worry about choke points, or corners which could easily result in crashes due to two cars being close. When you start going into it... circuits have a lot more things to be checked. Rally stages on the other hand... moderately flowing (even then not really), narrow, representing the style of the roads in a given location and... that's about it. Let me put it this way. Rally stages are about being difficult to drive on, while circuits are about delivering the best possible racing environment.

Meh, generated circuits aren't the best idea. Circuits about all else require a lot of  design to make sure they have a good flow, allow overtaking opportunities, they are wide enough etc. On top of that they usually have a specific style to them, which makes them unique and I highly doubt an algorithm could do something like that.

Free copy of Witcher 3 with every game! Well... not really xD Although the names are similar, CDP RED is a dev studio, while CD Projekt is an old games distributor here in Poland. So unfortunately no free Witcher games, but at half of the price on Steam... heck, I ain't getting it from Steam for sure. Still not pre-ordering it anyway, not enough money and I don't support pre-ordering policy unless it allows to buy something at a price lower than that at launch.

I know that you can get them in Poland, CDProjekt is probably the official distributor here, probably why they have a good deal on the box version of DiRT 4 on gram.pl :D Almost half the price on Steam xD

Download 3DMark and run the API overhead test. See how the FPS goes down to 1. That limit is partly due to hardware and partly due to software (aka DirectX11). Now they could add streaming into the game engine but that would mean the game would not have Your Stage because I'm pretty darn sure that the accountants still wanted the game to release as soon as possible to ride on the rally hype that exists now to ensure high enough sales. And then they wouldn't have any stages to go with because the licensing kicks in so... they're left with no product to release. That would definitely make the higher ups "very happy". As to your second issue, remember the infamous Assassins Creed Unity? Want to know why it had a performance that was all over the place and looking at the same spot resulted in completely different FPS results? Draw calls limit. Even if you have occlusion culling you still need to draw things. Even if you add LODs, you still have to draw things. All that adds up when you're aiming for highest quality AND don't have streaming. Lastly, if you would put it somewhere near the original, you would need to add the draw calls again. Map size doesn't matter here, it's how much draw calls you have to make. There's this location in DiRT Rally called Monte Carlo, which is one long stage so they could add it together. But they did state that they can't do it due to technical limitations. And that only points to draw calls limit. And I don't think anyone wants any more performance drops in Monte Carlo, when that is as difficult and taxing on the system as it is. But it is still taxing. And add many small things and... you end up with one big thing. In a situation where they don't have streaming, that becomes an issue. They need to be constantly aware of how much room they have left. Until they move to a new engine that has either streaming or is running Vulkan/DirectX12, draw calls will be the bottleneck here.

You do realise that the feature that allows streaming of the objects has to be implemented in the game engine? Just so you know, not a single game released by Codemasters today has had that. All of them had to first load the map before you could play. Adding such a thing to an existing already limited engine is probably not only time consuming but also completely pointless. Also, just because the objects are repeated doesn't mean they don't have any impact on resources. DirectX11 has a very steep perfomance curve drop in terms of the drew calls at the same time. Once you pass a certain point it just tanks down. If you have to draw the same object thousand times... you still have to draw it a thousand times. The fact remains and with it the performance drop. That's one of the reasons why I would prefer if DiRT 4 was released in 2018 or even 2019. Actual new engine, without all this limitation and a lot more stuff implemented that they couldn't do for DiRT 4. Guys from Evolution studios are definitely bringing some incredible knowledge, which means that in few years time there will be some amazing stuff out there. Till then though... just more of pretty much the same even if a lot of work has been put into that change.

There's one issue people seem to forget about the DLC locations. Paid or free? If they go with paid, then MP experience will suffer because people that don't have those locations, won't be able to join the lobbies with those locations and those that have those bought won't be able to use those freely if they don't want half of the lobby to suddenly disappear. On top of that paid locations usually become completely dead shortly after release. Battlefield is a perfect example of that, pretty much every DLC released from BF3 has become impossible to play 3 months after its release. There are few exceptions to that like the Ziba Tower in BF3 and... that's all I can really think of. Locations are probably the biggest time sink even with the Your Stage tech so naturally the accountants want to monetise on that but at the same time it would be best for the MP experience if the locations would be released for free and the paid DLCs would basically be liveries, cars etc. In other words things that don't restrict people in terms of what they can play.

Maybe add an option such as "Road condition" in the freeplay in a form of patch later on? If you can do that in the career mode, should be possible in freeplay as well.

Botting in racing games is pretty much non-existent, otherwise we would have a lot of times on the leaderboards that are exactly the same. On top of that you need to record a run first for the "bot" to do it, so you can only score times that are achievable. And then we have the whole issue of different setups. You can't drive a car exactly the same way with a different setup. Even the smallest of changes will completely annihilate a run. This doesn't solve the issue at all. If the steering input would go instantly like that when not using the dampening effect found on keyboard, your run would probably be screwed hard, since I can't imagine physics would behave kindly when front wheels suddenly instantly changed their position (which naturally defies laws of physics). Most of the trainers are things as simple as improve the performance (acceleration, downforce, cornering speed etc.) or teleport to a certain spot on the map and so on and so forth. They aren't sophisticated "drive for you" mechanisms -_-

It's more like the manufacturers think they would have to fix all the broken ones and since they know they themselves crash those a lot in those games, they don't want their cars in games so they don't have to work xD

I'll be honest, I like the "DiRTy Dozen" the most. But I am kind of biased towards that movie so yeah xD In any case, a bucket full of cookies for the one that came up with it :D

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

I never said it's not that hard. It definitely is a difficult thing that consumes a lot of resources, especially so for racing games. What I don't like is when there are being given avoiding answers while nothing is being done. If there is a noticeable difference, that's already great. At least I know something is being done. And that is an answer I truly appreciate. No BS, just straight into the business :D I'm cool with that. Not a fan of leaderboards anyway. Takes people away from racing and puts them into "hot lapping". I'm all in for ladders and competition based on actual racing, rather than who can get the closest to the perfect run. But even for that you need anti-cheat, so that people can't cheat in the actual race. Doesn't CREST already work in a similar fashion? From what I can tell it's a recreation of the run from the telemetry data, which is essentially what the replays in other games are and why they take little to no space. I'm not saying it won't be costly and what not, just that you theoretically already have some of the groundwork done.

And that's specifically what dg meant. There's no cheating of the sorts on consoles, it's the PC side that is full of old cheats and the game itself still doesn't block the trainers themselves. So @KickUp the question is as simple as this. Will there be something done this time that will make an actual difference in the cheat fighting department or is it the same old avoiding answers that at the end of the day result in there being effectively nothing done (aka no noticeable difference)?

Wait, you were using Sony/Microsoft leaderboards on the PC version? o.O AFAIK the console versions are cheat free due to... well, being consoles. It's the PC side that has cheating issues.
