real life 2020 FIA World Rally Championship
RallyDriven replied to Fedemaisonnave's topic in DiRT Rally 2.0
He was pushing like hell on that stage! I'm not entirely sure how hard ogier was pushing, but that doesn't take it away from him in the slightest, as Paddon's time was still incredible! very pleased for him, and very well deserved! -
Or mirrored or with rally cars Upside down?
-
Yeah, but we kind of keep going round in circles, as it seems to keep coming down to what you like. I love RX and hillclimb, and so do a lot of others. I think they've translated the sport incredibly well into a game, as they have done with rallying as well.
-
A sense of speed and danger is something which is incredibly difficult to translate into a game. So last weekend on the somerset stages we lost the back end on a reasonably fast corner, and the front was heading towards the bank on the inside. If we had hit that, we would have definitely rolled. You can't really translate that feeling of adrenaline into a game. Don't get me wrong though, Dirt does an unbelievably good job, but as skiddy just said, those coming from other motorsport disciplines might have a difficult job of understanding where that feeling comes from. I know when I'm pushing hard on dirt rally, and I feel like I am on the edge. But understanding that feeling as an outsider is probably more difficult.

Rallycross tracks are too short for a standalone game, and rallycross is really cool in real life cause you feel all the bumps, crashes and more. In game its boring cause you dont feel anything. The close contact in rx gives the drivers adrenaline and more and thats why they like it. I don't find RX in game boring at all. I think it provides some of the best moments in game when you are scrapping for positions flatout and sideways! You could compare any motorsport in a game and say it doesn't give you adrenaline the same as it would in real life. That's just what happens. The game does a brilliant job of giving you an incredibly realistic feel of driving a rally car on a special stage, but I could say its boring because I've been in a real rally car and it's not the same.It has nothing to do with the nature of the sport, it just comes down to the very simple fact that rallycorss is not as popular as sports such as rallying, F1 and NASCAR which all have their own standalone games.
-
I don't see ralycross disappearing at all. It's very quickly growing in popularity. I can only see it becoming more prominent in racing games. But as I said, I don't ever see it becoming popular enough to support its own standalone game. But if you are looking to have a side element in a rally game which involves contact racing, rallycross will ALWAYS be the number one choice, as it's the most popular and recognizable. I enjoy all the other previous offroad sports in dirt games like the trucks and buggies, but they're just not as popular. It isn't something that's going to disappear, no way.

Trouble is, from a management point of view, Grid is done for. Grid 2 received pretty mixed reviews and poor reception from a lot of fans of the original, and Autosport didn't really sell because of that, despite being a better game. Where as Dirt 1, 2 and 3 did very well, showdown broke even despite its flaws, and Dirt Rally seems to have done very well, especially in reviews and its reception. It's likely that we will be seeing what Paul was talking about on absolute rally radio, and possibly something a bit different from the former evo studios guys.
-
There's not a huge amount of racing games that focus on one discipline, and they're definitely not the most successful games. It's basically putting all of your eggs in one basket, and as awesome as rallycross is, not the most popular basket.
-
I'm not sure if a standalone RX game would sell. I think it would be targeting too small a market. I seem to remember a conversation back when I visited codies about world RX wanting a standalone game, but the guys didn't think it would work. If you think about it, everyone who wanted to buy a RX game would have bought dirt rally already. So then take off all the people who only bought it for rally and hillclimb, you wouldn't be left with many people
-
It's been reported that the evo studios guys will be starting work in their next project at the end of the month
-
It wouldn't really have to be truly dynamic, as you would never see what the other cars have done. The only time true dynamic changes would be requires would be if it incorporated something like dirt 3's online staggered starts. As you say, all you would need is some kind of system that implements varying levels of ruts onto a stage depending on your starting position. And on tarmac stages you could have areas where mud (or snow in monte) has been brought onto the insides of corners where cars are taking cuts.
-
Another thing that was highly hinted at by Paul was something along the lines of dynamic stages. He mentioned how they wanted to come up with ways where the stages would always be slightly different to provide a new challenge. Could also mean more dynamic weather with puddles?
-
Yeah, I saw that thread earlier. Just back away slowly while avoiding eye contact. Also, don't worry too much about the future, it is looking good :D Worrying about the future? you do know this is the gossip thread, right? ;)
-
Great news, except this part: "it may be a sequel, it may be something a bit unique and different". Call me paranoid if you wish, but maybe we're not getting another rally game this next time around? I interpreted it as maybe going along the lines with what they did when they first moved from the CMR games to DiRT. So incorporating different elements of the rally and offroad racing worlds into one game, but using dirt rally's approach to handling and detail. Basically, what ever comes next will be some kind of evolution of dirt rally. Paul also mentions DLC for DR as one of the options for the future, but it sounded unlikely from what he said.
-
In short, the next game will take the basis left behind from dirt rally. it may be a sequel, it may be something a bit unique and different, but it will take forward the ideas from dirt rally. There was mention of early new handling being developed that already made dirt rally look 'old school'. Paul also mentioned increased production value of the game, so I'm guessing they will get the budget to produce something with the exterior qualities of previous dirt games, such as a more detailed career, soundtracks, menus and everything else. Which is one thing that I think Dirt rally misses slightly.

I don't think need for speed had anything to do with the reasons for the car not being in the game. I can't remember the full conversation we had with the team about it when we were there, but I remember a different issue was the main cause of the problem
-
Yeah I've heard a few others did it. The note was '1 right into 3 opens right long, and hairpin left'. Unfortunately the 1 right and the 3 right were basically the same corner, it should really have been 1 right opens and continues. So I hadn't realized that we had passed the 1 right and were already on the 3 right when I called the hairpin. That and It was fairly deceptive which caught dad out. This is why you should go over and make changes on the afternoon run!

Pretty much So, excuse the massive amount of swearing, here's what happens when both co diver and driver make the same mistake on the same stage twice, on SS1 and SS12! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSb188Jgowc&feature=youtu.be

The forum banned me, no one knows why yet. THE FORUM HAS SPOKEN. ALL HAIL THE FORUM. Well this got weird quickly! Whilst we're off topic, here's mine and my dad's run of Porlock on last Saturdays Somerset Stages. Managed to set the fastest time in our class! Also, apologies @Rallycameraman for forgetting to wave, as you might have noticed when we came past, we had a small incident on stage 1! There is a video on facebook, but it involves a fair amount of swearing! Nice going, i see your Dad uses the 'bunny rabbit' technique for driving :D It tends to be necessary when you don't have much power! Our car is a near enough standard 1.4 despite being in the 1400C class It also now has misshapen door from our ss1 incident, which in tempted to put into youtube

Rallying is expensive, full stop. You can do it on the cheap, but it will still cost you a fair amount. It's not just buying or building a car, it's spares and repairs, tyres, entry fees, transporting the car and hotels

I imagine a class of: - Ford Focus WRC - Toyota Corolla WRC - Mitsubishi Evo VI WRC - Peugeot 206 WRC - Subaru Impreza WRC 2000 - Skoda Octavia RS WRC - Hyundai Accent WRC Call it "90s" for example. Since we have 2010 car now in 2000s this shouldn't be a problem. And my pants suddenly got sticky xD I think we could go on for a while making sticky pants classes!
-
And some amazing R2, R3, R5's rally cars or more WRC rallycars ;-) That would be amazing! Just imagine a class of:Hyundai i20 R5Ford Fiesta R5Citroen DS3 R5Peugeot 208 T16 R5Skoda Fabia R5Mitsubishi Mirage R5Now that would be a hell of a lot of fun!

I've said it before, but I'd love to see a dirt 4 game with the handling and stage design of dirt rally throughout, so things like the buggies and trophy trucks as a sim. I'm also one of the few who liked gymkhana, and I think that would be pretty cool if done the same way
-
The problem is more if the engine is limited. I know what we have in Dirt Rally is absolutely amazing, but if the engine is limiting the next game - such as not being able to introduce longer stages, terrain deformation, more stages etc. - then the engine will need an overhaul to keep the next game fresh
