DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games
RodgerDavies replied to MastaVonBlasta's topic in DiRT Rally 2.0
Watched the whole Gamekings footage and can't wait to see some actual sim channels get ahold of the game to try it out in this way. The game looks visually superb and the Your Stage tech looks seamless (though I'm curious as to how frequently that El Molar hairpin will crop up in Spain!), but so far this video adds to the illusion that the handling model is awful. I realise it's "Gamer" settings and I'm not the intended audience, but setting fastest sectors after rolling the car several times and driving Sweden like it's asphalt is just doing the opposite of making me hyped so far. Again, I read above and I know this is the publisher's decision, but all I can see they're doing so far (for people who don't follow this forum) is serving to alienate people like myself brought back to the fold by DR. I like every screen I see of the game and, even if I don't 100% agree with them all, all the comments from the dev folk on here about the game's direction and am hoping to be excited by the footage soon, but I really hope you can wrangle some codes from the publishers for some PC sim channels (Jimmy Broadbent, ISR, Empty Box etc). I really want to make this my second ever pre-order (the first was TOCA World Touring Cars, so also CM!), am just waiting to see something, anything, that says "similar physics to DR but better aero" to me. Hey, I bet DR was easier without idiots like me moaning before trying it out, right!? Last time I mention this for a few weeks, I promise, just wanted to put into words. -
List of racing wheels I'd say. Also, a little curiosity, am I the only one who noticed that the car selection screen isn't a static background? There's a Subaru driving around in the background!

It would be moving from a closed circuit racer (render the track during the load screen) to an open world game (loading the track during gameplay). That would probably require the fps to be cut to 30 for consoles.

I'd bet the next things to achieve are: Road deformationFew cars simulatenously on track (rally staggered starts)Tyres - softs/hards and the simulation of worning them off (is it how you call it?)If they achieve this, they will be the kings of motorsport games forever. you know what i played a rally mod yesterday on assetto corsa and im surprised its not already in todays games.what the guy done in the mod is amazing.the car i was using was a wrc fiesta and the way it moved on tarmac/asphalt almost had me breathless.was nigh on perfect.also a car width track no mistakes go unpunished.really brings home the speed like that though. I've tried that and it does actually work really well on tarmac, even on some of the mod gravel tracks its ok and kinda fun The car models are impressive but to me it still feels like a GT3 car with a rally skin. Mods are neat but most of the time I just want to drive quality content. For every good mod there are 100 bad ones. well the mod we are talking about is actually a great one couple it with semtin which is a really tight car width road on asphalt the way the car moves over bumps and uneven ground is close to reality.one thing dirt misses is when you jump or go over uneven ground it feels flat . on the mod you can feel both sides of the car reacting through the steering. this is the track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYARYzYiT6E while the graphics are bad the feel is great. im hoping Dirt 4 has that feel on the asphalt . also the width of the track really adds to rally.this really needs to be addressed as it gives a better perspective to speed and danger when its tight. What needs to be adressed? Making tape measured roads more narrow than what they are? Spain IRL is quite wide running on two lane roads most of the time so if you are awaiting Sementin type of roads there you're going to be disapointed. A Tape measure is irrelevant. You do realise that the Rally car on your to screen and the stage that it's on, don't actually exist? I dont think the the scales are right on DiRT Rally to be honest. The point dgeesio is making, is that the perception of speed and danger aren't accurate in DR. Flat out is too easy & risks aren't punishing enough. Thankfully, D4 Scale seems better in that respect, I just hope the driver workload has been increased too. Sections of stage should demand restraint So what are you using as a reference? It's all onboard footage I guess. Onboard footage with a wide fov looks way faster/dangerous than you would perceive it in the actual drivers seat. I feel bad for the devs doing all these road measurments while visiting the locations. So much unnecesary work for something irrelevant. Right? ;)

I have to say, those mountains in Sweden really surprised me, and I like them. It fit's awesomely well with my league plans for a Rally Norway and a Rally Sweden separately. That brings up a question @KickUp , can you recognize those, let's call them Fjord-Mountains, on the preview-screen when generating a Stage? So you can see, if that stage goes through/contains this particular area or not?
-
Partly it's about getting as close to the real thing as possible on the screen, and that includes seeing the damage (which can make it easier for some players to assess or intuit the handling effects of damaged or missing parts), on their own car and on their opponents' cars. Damaged parts on the track surface are a factor in real-life racing, so having parts able to break off are yet another element of real-life racing that the player can experience. Also partly because it's rad.
-
Do not confuse actual damage, ie. simulated, Vs graphically displayed/represented damage. Normally a being broken through the actions of the player seem to be ok, however, they can be funny about how much visual damage can be represented on screen.
-
i agree with that, i use nividia surround to go triple screen, but sometimes i like to play couch games on the tv, with the current driver i can ctrl alt s and it goes to my tv but thew new driver they removed the hotkeys for some reason

@KickUp May i ask. at 0:40 we see same livery without sponsors, but in the gameplay we se Texaco and other sponsor on the truck, are we abel to modify custom livery created from your starting list (from livery screen, there where few without sponsors)? or just ad sponsors on your liveries or it goes automatic? (or it was Team Branding between the gamplay footage and was cut the part from video?) The build was Alpha. The intention is to have sponsors shown on the images although this hasn't been achieved yet. Many of the liveries, that Texaco one for example, are built using the branding suite by one of my designers. We then allocate them to a team in game that you can race for or compete against. If you see a livery in game and it is not a famous one from real motorsport then there is a ~95% chance you'll be able to recreate it in the branding suite for your team. (We have still hand crafted ones that make up the other ~5% of the fictional team liveries)

Haven't you had one of those? Sometimes small clouds can bring rain showers. Sometimes there even apears to be rain from clear skies, as the wind has pushed raindrops away from the cloud that they came from With cloud yes, but not full sunny day and rain. Haven't seen that combination irl. Pouring rain and sunny weather. I like it though that it is available in D4. Let me see if I can find the screenshot. edit: sorry my error! It says time of day and with that you choose the weather. Sorry for the confusion! From 13:00 https://youtu.be/cREEx-6zX_s?t=13m My confusion came from this screen:

That is a gorgeous screen, I never tried Sweden much in DR but thoroughly looking forward to it in D4. -
Spoken like a true Apple fanboy ;) What amazes me is that my S3 has a bigger screen, nearly the same res, nearly the same pixel density, and it came out in 2012. And my S3 also has an 8MP camera which is capable of taking some great pictures. £10 difference at launch is reasonable when you're getting superior hardware. What I find interesting though, the Z3 has dropped by £70 since release in September, and the iPhone 6 has dropped by £10 since September... The craziest thing I saw was the iPhone 6 Plus going for £1200 from Amazon's warehouse around release, which is utterly and completely messed up. So you could spend around £700 extra for a bigger screen and a bigger battery. That's it! Everything else is identical between the 2 phones. And the bloody thing still sold out. I seriously hope any of the idiots who bought it at that price had it bend in their pocket.

Just bought a Kindle Paperwhite. It's hard to explain just how good it is compared to reading from a tablet without showing it to someone. It's amazing, it's like reading a paper book, but with perfect lighting all the time. Tablets let off light which strains your eyes because they are back lit. The kindle Paperwhite lights are from the front pointing at the screen, so there's no glare and can be read in all conditions.

1) hm ok. Is there a reason behind this? In Dirt Rally I would've preferred half or quarter of the current motion blur strength. Best is completely deactivated for me I guess, but thats then problemativ with youtube compression 2) At least that. Thats a great step forward then if at least the weather effects work. Splash Water? What you can do about it? Make water splashing on the whole screen (like every other game would do and DOES do)(obviously you cant use the wiper here, so just let it fade away like it currently does on the windshield without using wiper too. But at least try to do anything to it. Let it at least splash SOME water rather than nothing at all. Its so ridiculous that I called my lets play video "Splash Water without water" xD And in this case the title fitted sadly perfect and my audience had to laugh about it too xD I've added water splashes on the camera in bumper and bonnet cam when you go through water troughs. It's never going to be the same as the windscreen splash for various technical reasons but at least there's something there now... Sweet! But since it breaks my immersion, I can turn it off though right? >:)

what about mud tho????????? I demand to have mud flicked up onto the screen in bonnet cam. B)

They don't perform better though :p Performance-wise there isn't much between the 2 devices, and if anything the Z3 will perform better than the iP6, either way you are still getting less but paying more. As for cars, why would you want to control your phone from the cars screen? You still have to look away from the road to do so, so it's still just as dangerous lol. It infuriates me because a lot of the people who come to the classes I run are like "I want an iPhone because they are the best" or "My family told me to get an iPad because they are the best", but they aren't!!! You can buy an Android tablet for £120 less that will do the exact same thing lol. And some apps that cost on the Apple devices, are free on Android. I'm doing what I can to save people money they don't need to spend on a device that seems to be aimed at simpletons (and I'm not calling you one, just saying that the software layout is extremely basic). As for the GPU comparison, the 980 is a fair bit better than a 290X, uses less power for better results, gets driver updates pretty much monthly, has ShadowPlay and had DSR to itself to begin with. And yea, an i5 quad core is faster than an AMD 6 core, but say the i5 is running something that's a system hog, and the 6 core is running something extremely basic and light, gonna be hardly any difference, except in this case you're paying more for the 6 core than you are for the i5. So, cancelling out battery and higher spec internals, what about the screen size, resolution, and video recording resolutions? Plus the storage expandibility too. Xbox One is cheaper than a PS4 now ;) And we will go around in circles, but it's a fun debate right? ;) For me I hated Apple from the very beginning, then I tried an iPad and my brothers old iPhone, and it made me dislike them even more. Once I actually got to see what they gave you for the price being charged I was outraged. Because looking at the same icons and the same layout day in and day out gets boring and the device just stagnates. The only reason I've been able to put up with my S3 for nearly 2 years and still actually kinda have a soft-spot for it really is because I've been able to change the entire layout whenever I've wanted to. For a while it makes it feel like an entirely different thing altogether :)

No variable strength on the motion blur, sorry. I just tested bumper cam in the rain and you get the same rain effect no matter which exterior camera you use (in Dirt 4). I'll see what I can do about the water splashes... 1) hm ok. Is there a reason behind this? In Dirt Rally I would've preferred half or quarter of the current motion blur strength. That is in no way the final build which is why it said 'Alpha Build - Work in Progress' at the top of the screen. In fact that build is nearly a month old now and we probably have another few weeks of polish and balancing to do.

I can share that we won't be shipping with a Photomode. It is one of those things that we'd want to do properly and there simply isnt enough time to get a polished photomode in game without losing something more important. We haven't made any plans about DLC yet as we want to see what the reaction to the game is like once we release in June. We do intend to keep supporting it but what form that support takes is yetr to be decided. I get that it must be about taking screen shots, but what exactly is a Photomode? It gives you an ingame photocamera with all options included like a real camera does.

Not seen the set up screen yet but in the real life motorsport world we refer to the toe setting as in or out. Its the camber angle that is negative or positive. A typical set up for most cars would be about 1 degree toe in to compensate for the force on the leading side of the wheels pushing the toe to zero as the car powers forward. The settings differ slightly for FWD and RWD. This also applies to your normal road car. Also known as tracking. The camber setting on most racing or rally cars is about 1 or 2 degrees negative but it does vary a bit on different systems.
