DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Good morning, I'm still gobsmacked by the great preview video Codies and Neil Cole released...! I really hope we'll get to see more of such previews for the RX expansion update and for Rally updates. There were so much great and informative stuff in the video: - how instantly the car handling model is switching between surface types and that each surface type has subsets - for RX the team had to work on the AI - will it be an improvement over the AI in DiRT 3? - there were these cool single line streaks as we were showed the dev screen in race: are these the paths/lines done by the AI or player's previous laps? - the detail modelled underneath the car body shell: dampers, welds, chassis plate walls and pressed sections (even if it's just textures), uneven gaps between sections of bodywork the cars are so nicely crafted - spotter system with recorded lines: how accurate and useful will be the guidance from the spotter? - what about the launch? will launching in RX be any different than in rally? Lots of questions, but it is clear to me that the team wanted to represent the RX as authentically as they could. @tbtstt going mental is proof that they're on the right path :) I can't wait to try it out this weekend!

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Dear @KickUp , @justbiglee , @cmsoundfx , @soundfx and all at Codemasters. I would like to complain. Having managed to dissuade myself from a trip to PC World this evening, I happened to log on to my my computer and see this video posted in the thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsWYmLt9H2s So high was my level of want for what I was seeing that I immediately threw my wallet at the computer screen with such velocity that said monitor is now destroyed. I am holding you all personally responsible for the creation of such a desirable add on for DiRT Rally and the devastation it has caused to my existing computer setup. I must insist you provide me with a replacement monitor (and of course a matching high spec desktop) in order to prevent me from taking this matter any further. Yours faithfully Steve

It's a requirement of their license agreement that we put that on the legal screen. Would love to have that Astra in there though ;) Could you enlighten us as to the reason why it's not on the game? Partly cost and partly because we couldn't find one quick enough.

DiRTy Gossip about DIRT Rally Games

Since DiRT Rally is a work in progress, there are a couple of (small?) graphics things that I have noticed that could be improved.  I am posting them here first to see what you guys think, not weather they need to focus on other parts, just if you think its something that you agree with, and I know you guys wont beat me up too much :) 1) Although cars get pretty dirty on some stages, I find it odd that dirt and dust doesn't fall on horizontal surfaces.  It sees that these areas should get some sort of film and grime on them.  2) in Greece especially when the car passes, on a drone or a panning view, the screen fills up with dust (great effect!) but there is this odd grey area under the tires that just doesn't look right thru the dust, like the layers are mixed up.  I would think once the dust fills up the camera and you see the rear of the car for a bit that you should only see the dust in front of the camera not the grey behind the the dust (from camera angle).  Not sure if I am making sense, I'll post a pic of what I mean.   Yeah its small stuff, but in the past its been the  small stuff is what made DiRT so great.  Really we don't need swaying foliage or spectators clapping or varied spectators or really any, as some call 'fluf' but when all this 'fluf' is put together it realty adds and ambiance to the overall game that adds to the realism. As always I don't know what goes into programming this sort of stuff and its way easier to type than to implement, again beyond the technical side, if it was waving a magic wand, would you like to see these fixed or added?
  10. Okay, so i found a solution that will help you guys. Very easy.  I play GRID on steam on my Razer blade laptop with a high resolution 3200x1800. I have windows 8  What I did was, I went to my documents/my games/GRID autosport/ hardwaresettings then clicked on hardware_settings_config a XML file.  I opened it then looked for the width and height of the game. My fullscreen was on "true"   For my width, i typed in 3200 for my height i typedin 1800 because those are the resolution that makes it fullscreen. I saved it exited.  Then I started the game from steam, then it became full screen. No borderless window or border window. Just complete fullscreen.  Maybe you guys can try this.

Really good game! I would like to see:I would like to see the guys at Codemasters to reduce the "back on track timer" and let us finish the crash, without numbers popping up on the screen. Also Alt-tabbing to windows desktop takes the game out of fullscreen mode. It's kinda annoying, ¨ Would like to see more objects on the road, like people and animals and "inner road track" as you see in this picture: http://games.softpedia.com/screenshots/Richard-Burns-Rally-Demo_4.jpg is looks much better than track of the rally cars who is in the middle of the road in a turn. More cars. WRC WRC!! And please WRC Toyota Yaris 2018. It looks so awesome! A mode where you are able to create your own rally team a and design your own car etc.. Replay mode Mabye random crashed cars on stages. And that you can drive past cars like in the other Dirt games. Beacuse you feel so alone in Dirt Rally world right now.

    F1 2015 No Career mode??

Thanks @LiteralZero, although to be fair, certain threads including this one has become mainly a Pcars discussion group..., and how can people compare it to F1 2015 when clearly they are not the same game...? However, you're the manager so its in your hands; any mention or post is happen to view in relation to 'that' title I will just pass by... - Handling - Graphics - Weather systems - Force Feedback - On screen display/HUD - Online modes - AI and difficulties - Cockpit cameras, and other camera positions - Replays - Race engineers - Quick race modes That's only a few things you can compare. There's so many other things that you can compare Project CARS and F1 2015 to as well. I know we don't know everything about F1 2015 yet, but that doesn't mean people can't make comparisons. Project CARS and F1 2015 are two of the biggest racing titles to be released this year, both on the new-gen consoles, people are bound to compare them.

    Project CARS

Project CARS isn't for the "average casual racer." It's for motorsport enthusiasts. Just like the F1 games & DiRT Rally aren't for "75% of console owners," but for enthusiasts of those genres. Project CARS has extensive customization options.  The game definitely leans more strongly towards the "sim" side than the "arcade/casual" side, but it has the ability to accommodate various play styles through a variety of in-game configuration settings. There's no way to know "one" setup that suits everyone, so the defaults may not feel the greatest to each & every person the first time they pick it up. It's better that the game has the ability to be configured & adapted for individual preferences instead of only having one immutable configuration. Take a look at these threads for more info on customizing Project CARS controller settings: http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?23153-Xbox-One-Controller-Configuration-Guide http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?21992-Setting-up-a-gamepad With regards to the lap times & sector times you mentioned, you can map a controller button to "Cycle Lap Info" (I have it mapped to the up D-Pad direction), which will cycle through various on-screen timing charts while you're driving. I wouldn't be so quick to judge the game if you haven't further explored how much you can tailor it to suit your preferences. Well I did say that here   "Had only about 10 hours worth of play so far, so too early to make too many statements." So they are my initial impressions. Probably more time than quite a few reviewers put into the game. I don't think my impressions are particularly negative so far, it's a good game, it's just that the game is not the eighth wonder of the world that some seem to claim it is. It has quite a few issues beyond what I've already stated. And if the game is aimed at the sim racing enthusiast, then I think there is a big questionmark over whether releasing it on console is that smart a move. Most sim racers are on PC's with wheels. Most console players are likely to be casuals with controllers. If you look on Amazon it's taken a heavy bashing on the review side because it seems like this wasn't anticipated (schoolboy error if you ask me).

    Project CARS

Formula A are pretty much F1 cars AFAIKT. When I played them straight off I found them very hard. There is also a lot of screen judder/camera shake. I can't figure out whether that's because the track is bumpy and it's really like that or it's frame stuttering. When I moved to formula C these were much more fun to race, but still needed careful attention. On of the differences in Pcars is that understeer is a lot more prevalent IMO.  I can't really remember ever getting heavy understeer in GA. I think this is probably because although understeer is a real possibility in the real world, in the game world people find it quite annoying, its like you jam the controller all the way over and still nothing happens. Oversteering is much easier to deal with by feathering the throttle. My guess is the more arcade type games don't implement understeer so much because of this. I've heard the settings on PCars affect the car perfomance more, and that the default settings are far from the best. So maybe there is some tinkering to be done. That said, your average casual racer doesn't want to spend hours arsing around with car settings and controller settings. To be honest I would prefer the cars to be a be more drivable in the default state, but I'm willing to put the effort in to coax out a bit more performance and fiddle with the setups. My guess is that 75% of console owners wouldn't be though.

Your economic model could be interesting, but lacking identity. Bad thing for a united community and for time...as time is money... STOP COMPARING FLIGHT SIMULATORS or other non sense... You right about one thing, RBR is not as easy as Gran turismo, or Dirt. It took me an hour on RBR and 10 min on other,  to understand cars,  RWD, AWD, braking. This time scale can change up or down from a people to another...anyway But don't compare it to land a boeing 747. We all drive in real life,  most have done karting once, a bit less went  fast on road, and a few had done real life races. So yes, SIM RACING like RBR must be approach with the brain. What's difficult ? We all have done it with a car no ? And the pleasure is naturally there, driving is something pleasant, so why twist it and make it bizarre, non intuitive, false ?! People racing on RBR are not rally drivers but they could do it. I must say, it gonna be much more easy to approach with triple screen thing and better graphics, because seeing your environment clearly help very much to feel thing. The representation of a long road down a valley at sundown is bad with old graphics, and other things. For standart gamer RBR immersiveness is average, i recognize. But with graphicsl like that, gameplay facility, 'grand public' setting ... you must admit it gonna be immersive and much more easy to take on, (even with 747 physics in  quattro...) So get back to simple life driving pleasure DEVS PLEASE, and put tons of aids we can turn on and off. Make us feel, just not see. That's what im talking about : FEELING ! The only game we can approach like real life is fps or flying with an DK2 stuff & co or simrace driving. Because the wheel is provides to give you sensation, the game to immerge you and then comes the sensations, anf a fabulous game. Driving is not fast driving, driving fast is getting more and more difficult the more we are approaching the limit of the car. Anyone could set a limousine handling on cars with all AIDS on, auto-clutch, auto-countersteering, traction control, ESP. This is simple, take less time than making two identity of a same game, and everybody is happy even those fo paid for game named sim and still expecting arcade like.

    DiRT Rally feedback list

Some of these points are repeated but I wrote this post out beforehand and had to cut and paste it here from another section.  I'm sure it's easier to ignore any repeats rather than have a go at me for actually repeating them and not having read the entire forum first. ;) Let me start by applauding Codemasters in their attempt to make a bone-fide rally sim for the purists.  I am really impressed with this title in terms of its physics, sounds and graphics. Defauly FFB is a letdown but it is early access.  I had to use a 3rd parry ffb file which has transformed the game for me so this is something CM should look into.  But if Codemasters really (no I mean really) want to make Dirt Rally look and feel like a sim as well as drive like one, I feel some changes are needed. Some bad habits have been carried over from titles such as Dirt 3 and for a sim, these need to go.  I have taken a lot of time to make notes and compile them here so I hope someone is out there listening and really wants to make Dirt Rally into something it has the potential of being, which is the best damn rally sim since RBR (and likely better than even that.). There are some arcade style features in Dirt Rally which are just not good.  The replays are the worst. I mean it's boring and dire and needs to be re-done. I will explain more later. The graphics from in-cockpit are amazing, especially water splashes (are their mud splashes?).  CM have done some seriously good work on this title (the sounds are amazing) and I hope they don't spoil it by leaving it essentially as it it. So lets start with the replays.  Ok so this is not a driving aspect of the game, so technically doesn't change how much a sim the game is to drive.  But after a sim-like drive, the last thing I want is an arcade-style replay.  This replay should either be consigned to the bin or kept as a sort of "Director cam" option when cycling through the replay cameras. The replay as it stands is so boring I cannot bear to watch.  Those great graphics and sounds are being wasted on long distance helicopter shots which last too long, Go-Pro style exterior cam shots which are dull and interior shots which still has the pace notes being read out for some bizarre reason.  Really don't need to be instructed by a co-pilot during a replay. At present 90% of the replay can be thrown away as unexciting and undramatic.  The other 10% is as it should be.   Proper believable ground based track-side cameras.  Not seemingly floating cams or ones that impossibly follow the car.  The entire replay should simply consist of track-side TV cameras from believable positions.  See Assetto Corsa for an example of this. RBR does it pretty well too. So I would say either consign the current replay method to a director mode and add another replay cam option to be just track-side TV cameras or ditch the current one altogether and replace it with track-side TV cameras.  Not only do I like to watch my replay but I want to be able to choose which camera I watch it from and not have the game chop and change from interior to exterior then long time helicopter/drone shots from too far away. Think of the amazing replays that will pop up on YouTube. !   Please CM, do something about this. Ok onto my other points, some of which are replay related. ..... 1) Replays:  Sometimes the amount of dirt kicked up from behind a car is a little overdone and I know you can get this in the real world where you can't see the car for the dust, it just seems there may be a little too much of it.   Not a big deal, but an observation nonetheless. 2) Replays: Going back to what I said above regarding the not so good 'Director style' current replay system we have...  Helicopter shots are too far away (not zoomed in enough) and last for a bit too long.   Also the Go-Pro type on-board exterior shots are too numerous and they do not excite. 3) If you choose Auto or Semi-auto gearbox then sometimes the reverse gear does not work when you double-depress the brake pedal.  Reverse gear should never be on the pedal anyway. Especially not in semi-auto mode where a further downshift from neutral on the wheel should engage it. 4) Replays: Do not need to hear pace notes in replays. They are only heard on occasion anyway and really aren't needed in a replay. 5) Replays: Assuming CM can and do change their replay system to track-side tv cams only, it would be great to have a feature to save your replays. 6) Replays: Steering wheel control in replays is a bad idea.  If my steering wheel is 1 cm off centre during a replay then it's going either in reverse or has sped up.  Would be much better with h keyboard control or provide that as option instead of wheel control in replays.   7) Asking for button 1,2,3,4,5 etc...  That needs to change as you have to work out and remember what button 3, 2, 5 etc are.  Please, for PC users with wheels, again let us have keys to control these things 8) As a continuation of point 7, can we please have mouse support in the GUI / menus ??  Cheers. 9) Facility to allow for seat positioning (fwd/back/up/down) in-car as cockpit position sometimes is not ideal and too car away. 10) In the GUI when we select which rally stage we want to do (stage information), we should be able to see the length of the stage (miles/km) and our current best time there. 11) Auto vehicle recovery.  This 'feature' should be removed altogether and it should be totally manual (like RBR).  We have a button to recover the vehicle and it should depend on that only. If a cheat (cut corner) is detected then just add 5s or whatever to the stage time. Adding 15s for a vehicle recovery is unrealistic and annoying when the game auto recovers the car and gives you the penalty when you could have recovered it yourself in less time and saved the penalty. By going off the road you are already incurring a time penalty anyway ! 12) Do not need a 10s countdown to recover vehicle. Unrealistic. Then you STILL incur a 15s penalty !  Sometimes you can and want to recover yourself and should not be counted down. Again this recovery procedure should be manual and at the users discretion.  The vehicle should only recover when the users presses the button to do so. 13) Like the brake pedal acting as a reverse being intermittent (point 3), this may also be a bug.  Recover vehicle button doesn’t always work. Have to go to pause menu and do it from there. 14) For us PC users who are used to this sort of thing it most of our other sims, the ability to press 'Esc' during a rally stage would be handy (same as button on wheel for pause menu). Fiddling for it on the wheel can, on the rare occasion, have undesirable consequences. 15) Windscreen wipers are currently totally automatic.  Hmmm.  Can we please have an option for automatic (as it is now) and manual on/off ?  I see them coming on a lot for no apparent reason atm. 16) In-car steering wheel should properly mimic users steering wheel both in movement and any shakes.  The fake shakes are off-putting and unrealistic.  The car steering wheel seems to have a very limited turning ability and does not match what the users wheel is doing.   An option to make the steering wheel invisible would be good to as this is a much requested feature. 17) In the Custom Setup screen, in the Details section, where it asks you location, stages, results type, ai difficulty, it should remember the last user settings and not keep going back to default every time. This is all I can remember for the moment.  I know a lot of it is replay-centric but I really feel this part of the game lets it down right now.  I can just see the potential this has and if CM are dedicated into making this a full blooded sim then they are going in the right direction and I can see it's potential and don't want it to be let down with stuff that nay-sayers can just pick it apart on.  Please give us some nice replays so I can watch/record them too.   I can only wish CM the best of luck and admire that they are out to set the record straight that CM can produce a proper sim.  I want Dirt Rally to come out with a bang !

I think I saw the fox in the dark last night in Wales. There were two eyes gleaming then the head turned and there was a streak across the screen as it ran off. It all happened pretty quick, but I'm convinced its real. I still haven't seen the giraffe in Dirt 3 though. Sim-cryptozoology is turning out to be one of my favorite subjects.

I thought that too, try the Custom Event which allows you to drive any car on any track. It's pretty well hidden: on the 1st menu screen, just above Options & Extras.  I'd been playing for almost a week before I found it.
