Rallycameraman turns RallyING cameraman

Recommended Posts

Yeah basically, it's just a map of the stage as its a single venue. I'll search through my emails and try and find an example of one.

Only stuff like junctions, hazards etc are marked out right?

Good luck with your beginning rally career. Wish I had the money and opportunity to do this in real life too. Maybe after I finish my degrees and get a decent job.

Here in Finland surprisingly many of the smaller rallies (those that are not part of national championship) are these so called "blind" rallies. Bet its a pretty interesting experience just for that, some of the onboards from these kind of rallies show the driver and copilot having quite a bit of fun navigating their way through the course. So good luck and remember to have fun!  :p

I'm thinking of taking a rally license and i'm 40+...never got around to it.
This inspired me.

Stage diagrams?

Here's me on stage diagrams earlier this year at a single venue event at brands hatch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPziFXv_Jpg

Basically you just have an overview of the stage (as you can see in my hands) which you follow, and you shout out upcoming junctions and chicanes. There's often cones as well, so it will be 'left of cone B' or '360 round cone C'. As you can see there will be merges at junctions, so you have to get them right otherwise you will either come off the stage too soon and get penalties, or stay on too long and cost you a lot of time!

Iv done a few Targa rallies and Stage diagrams are more way difficult for a crew than detailed pacenotes, as they are both open to wrong interpretation and as @RallyDriven has said, when cones are involved, its really easy for a Co-Driver to get disoriented or for the driver to have real difficulty in applying the instruction to what he see's laid out in cones, in a wide open area.  Tree's are easier to negotiate! lol

My advice, dont try to re-create Dirt levels of detail in the Notes, keep it really simple and just drive.  You'll get most of it right just by watching where you are going!

Yeah, simple tends to be best I think. That video was stage 3, by the end of the day we new the layout like the back of our hand, as it didn't alter too much in the day, and there wasn't really much for me to do other than getting the laps/merges correct. But some single venue events like to mix the course up a bit more throughout the day!

Yeah Down Ampney doesn't change too much throughout the day and there's no proper wide open spaces to get lost either. I've been watching plenty of incar already lol

So today was just meant to be a case of having a look at the gearbox in the car, and changing the driveshaft seal that bust on the test session. Turns out the gearbox was completely f**ked so had to be taken out. Fortunately I picked one up a couple of weeks ago just as an 'emergency gearbox'. Fitted the new gearbox, and took the car out for a quick road test, and snapped some of the gear linkage! New linkage on order already.

Will be having a proper competition gearbox fitted after the event me and Paul are doing in May. The current gearbox will be fine for the first event, but it's not completely ideal as the final drive is just too long.

When I got back to the workshop I was told the owner of this beauty below sadly died this morning. Completely gutted about this as he was a great guy.

This looks like an exciting event. Escorts, Minis, Triumphs, even an Autobianchi! Will you have time to take some pictures, too?

Maybe in the service area, but were not allowed out of the service area.
This is where you invite a friend with camera knawledge. It's what I do with my friend.

Will you record the run with a dashcam or inside-behind-the-seats-cam?
Yes we will.

Hahaha, yeah, make a little hole in the dash with a big red alt-f4 button. Do it cool status and get the clear cover flip lid too.
