Rallycameraman turns RallyING cameraman

Recommended Posts

Well what a day! My first rally as a driver done and dusted, started off with a bit of a panic as the brand new intercom wouldn't work, even with trying 3 different batteries. Fortunately we managed to scab another one to use just for the day. Set off into stage 1 cautiously to judge grip and how the car behaved on Tarmac tyres, spun it on a slippy left after giving it too much handbrake, but that was my only indiscretion all day. Kept it neat and tidy for the rest of the day and got the car home without a scratch in 31st Overall and 2nd in class. Admittedly I benefited from retirements, but I'm happy with the progress I made throughout the day. I never realised how difficult and how much hard work it is to try and drive a car quickly too, I'm knackered.

Paul was brilliant on his first single venue event, a big learning curve for him reading from a stage diagram and not pace notes, and he never sounded worried with my driving either, so I couldn't have been too bad
:D All the car needs now is a wash and spanner check, and it'll be ready for its next event.

Some incar from the last stage of the rally.

Are you using a go pro like? If so you should be able to get a wire that plugs into the intercom and the camera to give you the intercom sound as well.

Well done one on finishing your first event, and a good finish too!

Yes it was a Go Pro, but as we had a problem with my Stilo intercom, which otherwise would've been plugged in, I didn't have time to find a connection to the one I borrowed at the last minute.

First off, congrats!  Great start to hopefully a long long list of rally competitions.

Now I'll jump right into some questions, if you don't mind.

1). Will you ever go back to playing games?
2). Has anything you learned in DR transfered over to the real world?
3). Might not be able to answer this, but what would you add to a wish list for a new game, now that you've driven in a rally?
4). Where the roads too wide? :)
5).  It seems you are very comfortable driving at speed, how did you get to that point?

I hope this makes for some interesting conversation

Congratulations! The course looked really narrow and technical. A real workout with all those hairpins and tight corners, I presume. A lot of them blind, too, so it surely took some guts to approach them fast. Well done!

I feel the urge to take the family sedan out for a ride...

Congratulations for the fresh start to rallying. I like how you keep up with a cautious pace to keep the car on track.

+1
Another important question if you do not mind: how does the FWD car handle in real life compared to the ones we have in DR? A comparison, please. :)

Yeah, someone needs to dub it with Pauls voice from DR. Very sad, much disappointment no voice.

Why wouldn't he be able to add an idea to a wishlist? It could even be something they're working on.... but we wouldn't know that.... ;)

Well done m8, that looked amazing, hope you had a great time and one question: Did you finish high in your class?

Looking forward to more!

1. Yes of course I will. Not sure when I'll be back on dirt or any other racing games though as the TV on my rig is bust and I can't really afford another one as I'd rather go rallying for real!

2. Hard to say really as the type of car and event was completely different to anything available in DR. It certainly helped having Paul in the car, listening to him through the intercom felt very natural and clear.

3. Yeah it's kind of hard to answer this. No game will ever compare to the real thing, there's just so much more going on when in the car compared to being sat at home.

4. They weren't wide enough in places when trying to overtake cars! But as it was an old airfield some of roads were nice and wide and others were just over a cars width.

5. I've never had a problem with speed, I'm not scared of it and had no fear. I wanted to push myself and drive as fast as I felt I could, I'm more than happy with how things went at the weekend. It's something I've wanted to do for a long long time so I didn't want to just cruise around for a finish, I wanted to drive fast and have fun.

Awesome run in that video, and i know what you mean about being knackered, my first races were a lot more physical than i had imagined!  Good run, good result, car intact and huge smile installed :D

I would like to resurrect this thread, since @Rallycameraman has done a few and his reports have been scattered about the interwebs.

This came to mind as a testament to the hardships of rallying:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrEkFxXgYis

It's a little embarrassing to show for US Rallying, this particular event has struggled over the years finding locations.  It used to be our only fully tarmac rally in America, but then locals who didn't like it started sabotaging stages (literally) like parking lawn tractors in the road during an event.  So organizers have been sorting out locations and roads, this isn't pretty.. but in the end its the sport we love.

Hope to hear from more of you adventures @Rallycameraman
