Rallycameraman turns RallyING cameraman

Recommended Posts

So as some of you may know, last month I purchased a 106 GTi to do some competing in this year. I thought I'd @Benniz idea and start a thread to show case my progress throughout the year. Currently the car is here at my house, but it will soon be going to it's new home where it will be stored in a nice garage and get well looked after. Tomorrow I plan to do a small auto test in the car to get a feel for it, and I'll try and have the Go Pro in the car to record a couple of runs. Hope you enjoy my updates as I start this expensive journey!

I won't be competing on any BTRDA events, but will be out filming most of them. My first gravel event will be the Wyedean in November.

@Rallycameraman I love stuff like this, watching cars get done up is heaps of fun for me, I guess that's why I like Wheeler Dealers so much.

I'm not familiar with this type of car but I will look it up. Do you have any other pics including interior shots?
Also any chance you could post some info on it? Like tech specs and the like?

I noticed it already has a roll cage inside, does that mean you will not have to do much to it to get it rallying or is there still plenty to do?

Lastly has anyone seen the awesome episode of Wheeler Dealers where they do up a RWD (Ford Escort RS2000) to fully licensed rally car and take it for a spin?

We are not planning on doing a full BTRDA season, might do the Somerset, but we are looking at doing something different. Our first event is the brands hatch stages next sunday!

The car is all ready and raring to go. It just needs an intercom fitting! I however am not ready to go as I need to book and pass my BARS test, and I still need to purchase a race suit. Have everything else sorted.

With regards to tech specs, it's nothing special, stage 106 GTi engine and with close ratio gearbox, fitted with a Quaife ATB diff, Bilstein front and rear suspension, plumbed in fire extinguisher system, bolt in Safety Devices rollcage, and the all important hydaulic handbrake. Anything else you want to know just ask

Here's a couple of extra pics for you.

So I had a good blast in the car today at my motor clubs monthly auto test. It was a good chance to give the car the beans and get a bit of practice in with the hydraulic handbrake, which by the way is incredible fun. Learnt a lot already driving the tight course, rear end is too soft and needs raising up which will be done in due course. Managed to improve my times throughout the day, and my last run was 13 seconds quicker than my first run and I won my class, and I wasn't the only car in it either before anyone says ;) the car has now gone to it's permanent home where it will be kept in the dry and be well looked after, and it's in good company too (ever wondered what happened to the Alpine that appeared briefly in DiRT Rally ;) ) I was hoping to get some Go Pro footage, but unfortunately I couldn't get the clamps and everything set up to my liking. I will try again for the next one in February though.

I couldn't mount my go pro properly at firsthand, I ended up dangling it upside down from the bar across the roof behind the seats, then reversing the image. It came out quite well in the end, although I didn't have it on the right setting so it's a bit bright

Quick update. Have finally had a proper good look all around the car and a good check of everything, found a couple of small issues that need sorting out, the main one being both the rear shock absorbers need replacing.

Also recieved my Go Rallying starter pack from the MSA so I can finally book my BARS test to obtain my licence. Once those jobs and a licence are sorted, I just need an intercom fitting and then I can find a first event to compete on
