Proposal for Dirt Rally 2 Development Plan

Recommended Posts

Oh no, I don't want another project cars. Over at SMS they said Pcars would be the racing platform which evolves over time and adds more cars, tracks and features. After a few DLCs, they anounced Pcars2. Where are the new features of Pcars 1? Where is the development of the game?

I hope the guys at CM don't do the same mistake. They should release some DLCs (rallies, cars whatever) and I will gladly pay for it. Dirt Rally is a very solid platform which will get even better with more content.

Isn't the engine already built? According to wikipedia DR runs on EGO 3, while F1 2015 runs on EGO 4.
EGO4 has better graphics and such yes, but I dont know if it suits the needs (Long stage support, more cars on stage, etc.) because the only thing we've seen is a F1 game with small circuit-tracks

For me all that matters is momentum is maintained. If that is through DLC or a sequel I don't really care. If a sequel costs me a bit more than patching the existing and adding extra content then so be it - whatever creates the better end product.

My experience of games that have a long life and evolve is that the developers get pulled off to do other things whereas a new version has a big launch and a more focussed deadline.

In the case of Project CARS the development of the game is the sequel with another round of crowdfunding to pay for its development.

The driver is funding and how if fits in with other projects. As long as it isn't another RBR or Grand Prix Legends which get abandoned due to lack of publisher funding then it shouldn't really matter how they achieve developing the product.

EGO4 would be great if they took out that disgusting chromatic aberration which makes the game look like a bucket of wank. It can't even be turned off. It's like watching a 3D film without 3D glasses on.

Paul explained on the DiRT Show that they updated the engines without really making huge announcements about it. So while F1 2015 runs on Ego 4, it's still the same engine that powered DiRT 2 basically, just with some changes here and there to accompany some new things. But the limitations stand. For example, look at DiRT 3 and DiRT Rally. DR has longer stages and higher quality cars, but you literally can't have other cars on them at the same time, even if you don't see them. Polygon count for the loaded are is the limiting factor in this case most likely and they are bottlenecked by it hard it seems.

In short, Ego 4 is more like Ego 1.4, Ego 3 more like 1.3 etc. I personally wouldn't be surprised if Codies would get a license for the Unreal Engine 4 but at the same point it may be a lot harder to transfer the assets from DiRT Rally or simple fact of learning the new engine. Who knows, but one thing is sure. They need to seriously upgrade their engine if they want to truly push things forward. Otherwise DR2/D4 will be nothing more than a bunch of DLCs put together to form a single game.
