Sierra "RS500"

Recommended Posts

First of all there's one thing I'd like to say, and that is that Dirt Rally is a great game, however there's one thing that's horribly wrong.

The Sierra Cosworth in the game is not an RS500. The RS500 is not homologated for rally as FIA had a ban on the use of evolution cars as it came out. It's a small thing, but it's annoying as hell and it shouldn't be a fault. The RS500 has never been used in rally, and it will never be so because it's not homologated. It's also very easy to tell the difference between a normal Cosworth and an RS500. The RS500 has an additional lower rear wing, a larger rear wing, different front bumper with a larger splitter and larger air ducts, and ALL RS500's are RHD. I mean seriously Codemasters, it shouldn't be possible to get this wrong..

Just please change the name to Sierra RS Cosworth and it will be right, a thing like that in such a good game is really annoying. It shouldn't be too hard to get it right...

Depends if Ford told Codemasters they have to call it an RS500.
A lot of these kinds of things are dictated by the manufacturers in the licensing agreement and can't be changed, even if they are 'wrong'.
For a frequently referenced example, the stats for the Audi Quattro.

Is this the S1 E2 model, or the 22B? I always get them confused.
Please, E2 and GC models... 22B is a road car that was prototyped from Subaru WRC cars I reckon!

Someone will start a whole thread for this religious debate.

I doubt it has anything to do with Ford since there have been Cosworth's in the CMR Rally series with the right name. Another thing that also annoys me about it is that it's not even a Group A version. The one in the game is a Group N car, while the group A version was used in the world rally championship.

It's Group A. It wears lattice weave wheels when on gravel, but that means nothing.

I advise you to read this before you claim it's a Group A Cosworth. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4737599/page2

A link to a Volkswagen site...  Good call!

The in-game car shares a livery with McRaes car as a tribute.  Nothing but paintwork and a numberplate.  Since when did a group n car have 17" split rims, adjustable everything and 300+ Bhp??

If you knew anything about the particular car they used as a model in the game you'd know that it is a group N car. The quote from the Volkswagen site is from the advertisement when the car got sold a few years back. The numberplate in the game is also wrong, but I'm sure you didn't know that. The group n Sierra mainly used the standard 15" wheels for gravel and 16" split speedline wheels for tarmac. And the car in the game does not have the adjustable magnesium suspension the group A cars had. And if you knew anything about Cosworth's you'd see that the rear bumper on the one in the game is the same ss the group n car reffered to, as it is the only cosworth who has the bottom half of a mk2 Sierra bumper.

How did you figure out that the in-game version of the car does not have the adjustable magnesium suspension?

Group n weren't allowed to run over-sized wheels & the first Cosworth to have 16" wheels was the Escort.

Your arguement is invalid

From having seen the underside of it? The magnesium suspension looks completely different than the standard

Do you really think Codemasters have given a shit about wheel sizes when the MkII Escort in the game has irs and oversized arches? My point is that the car they've used to model the cosworth is a group N car, and not a group A car.

So it doesn't seem to be an RS500, apparently named for the power output.  I didn't know this.

However, i would imagine that Cosworth's approval might need to be sought if that name is used in it's title.

Here is the car the Dirt model is based off. It was entered as a Group A car (A8) in the 1989 RAC Rally, and driven by Colin McRae. His father ran an identical car (tag D418 SVW) in the same rally in the A8 class.

That's not the car in Dirt Rally.. D936 UOO is the licence plate of the car used in the game. You can essily tell by the fact that the one in the game is LHD, has a rear windscreen wiper and a "wrong" rear bumper.

The RS500 were named for the amount of cars produced, power output was 224HP, but they had slower top speed and acceleration due to the larger amount of turbo lag and higher downforce. The reason why they made it was because FIA allowed them to make an evolution model of the Cosworth when they had sold 5000 cars, however it was never homologated for rally and has never been used for it

Ah, I think I was looking at a custom livery for the car. So I went to look for a screenshot, but then it dawned on me that I don't actually care, so I will leave you guys to the rivet counting.

Sorry for the bad info.
