DSR 4k to a screen of 1080p 60 fps with dirt rally. What frame rate drop should I see

Recommended Posts

I've been playing ultra setting at 1080p with a frame rate of 60hz, TV Max. What frame rate will I expect if I turn DSR on to 4k and msaa to x2 or x4. Would I see a big drop in frame rate? Using MSI gtx970, 16gb of ram with i7 CPU. What have people seen with their own setup?

Expect about 3-4 times less FPS. Also, GTX970 is a GPU suited to 1440p at best. It's optimised for 1080p and that's the best way to utilise it. At higher resolutions you're more likely to hit the VRAM limit and that can create stuttering.

For people that are interested.

2k I was seeing a solid 60fps
4k was a solid 35fps.

Both msaa on x4 and on ultra.

I'll be keeping at 2k.

I loose about 5-10 frames when using DSR at 1440p with no anti-aliasing, which honestly surprised me. Your setup is a bit beefier than mine so you shouldn't have any problems. The visual upgrade is definitely nice, but for me it's more important to keep things as smooth as possible so I stick with 1080p 2xMSAA. I get much worse stuttering when using 4K, as Ryu says this GPU really isn't at its best at 4K.

1080 is the best option with all on max for a 970
will run 1440 pretty nice also
4k is 35-30 fps.

I don't use DSR & I run on ultra preset at 1080P.

If I change the setting it make the room really hot & it's not an ideal for long session gameplay.

I don't have those issues. I use my PC as a heater so I can reduce the central heating bill :D

To be fair, you can turn down that MSAA at 4K. That's part of the point.
DSR is basically what we used to call SSAA (Super Sampled) which was always the better looking AA method, just more demanding.
The only time to really use both is when you are purposefully going for screenshots

My rig pull 900W from the wall when everything is on load. That heater is quite something.

If I limit myself to only use Ultra, my setup is very efficient, thus I prefer that way.

I chose the 980Ti, because it consume less than my old 7970 on the same graphic setting. I usually upgrade to 2X performance increase & I buy the very high end one to avoid silly bottleneck when it's near the time to upgrade.

I put a setting where I'm satisfied, but not really the kind of person to put everything all the way up just for small change.

When you buy a graphic card, you mostly for the parts & the 980Ti is build with high end one, thus I don't think it will get a major price cut even if the future product produce better performance due to the shrink & new types of memory.
