Other racing sims out there?

Recommended Posts

As I got myself a new T300 last summer I've been playing pretty much only Dirt Rally on it, but I'm curious as to what other good racing sims there are out there?

I got Project Cars, but the handling in it just doesn't feel right. Tried grid autosport but that just show how much love Codies poured into Dirt Rally. Not a bad game, but doesn't give me the same feeling of driving a car as DR.

Any recommendations? Doesn't matter much what discipline, as long as it has that feel of driving that DR has.

I'm a big fan of Raceroom/R3E; the content is a bit pricey (although all free to try), but it's the only one of the modern bunch (PCARS, rF2, AC) that truly immerses me in a racing environment in the same way as DR does, with sound (best sound in simming), feeling, atmosphere and AI all really strong points of it.

I've not tried it yet, but Automobilists (sp?) from the makers of GSCE is supposed to be very good too.

I wouldnt take pCars out of the equation yet, problem is that the FFB out of the box is rubbish, and destroys the feeling. Setting up good FFB is a bit of a PITA, but totally worth it, there is a couple of good explanations on the pCars forum on how to do it.

What really speaks for pCars in my wiev is a good career mode, and a healthy online community, I've joined up with a group called RWB Racing ( http://rwb-racing.enjin.com/home ) we have a dedicated server which is populated almost every night and arrange league races on a weekly basis, good fun without too much serious competition, but very clean racing.

Good luck in your search...

I actually have that on my Steam from years ago @RodgerDavies .  I tried it briefly on a laptop, but never installed in on my newer PC's.  I suppose its worth a whirl?  Any online racing and are the other drivers kamikaze's?

I am really tempted to renew my iRacing account, but i'll wait for a deal to come up!

I personally spend a lot of time with iRacing, Automobilista and Assetto Corsa.

Out of those I'd say Assetto is a good sim to start with. Lots of good content, mod support so there are also many 3rd party cars and tracks too.

Edit: Oh yeah I got myself new T500 wheel aswell, and the cars in those racing sims feel like totally new cars now for me! (they imo are good example of FFB done right  :# )

I've been messing around with iRacing. It can be done on the cheap if you find a promo code to try it out. I think I paid $15 for 3 months. It really seems like some of the best online racing anywhere. But one needs to keep ones spending in check while playing.

The issue with i racing is that as soon as you get out of rookie, to race a full season or two you have to buy tonnes of tracks, that are all really expensive. That can get to around £100 just to get going with a handful of tracks

Its a pity too, the most enjoyable racing is in the lower tiers.  Im not really a fan of oval racing or open-wheel, but found the MX5 and Saloon car racing very tight and enjoyable.  Those TDi Jetta's were a laugh!

R3E is really good and a lot of fun, but I uninstalled it because the "free to Play" essentially demo only has 3 tracks and 4 or 5 cars, and they don't have a way to just buy all the content, so it's kind of a convoluted mess. You can buy car packs and the DTM career packs or whatever, that has a fair amount of repeat content. There's apparently threads on how to get all the content for the cheapest price. It's also exclusively DTM cars, but the hill-climb was really fun, that's where I spent most of my time.

Assetto Corsa seemed to be like black magic in the way everyone described how perfect it was, and it's not. It's still a good sim, and when I got my triples set up right it really felt like I was driving a car. There's a decent amount of car and track selection, but I personally am not that interested in open wheels or GT, so mods keep it alive for me. There's really good car and track mods, but I haven't found anything yet for the awful UI main menu.

Project Cars: Here's a tip if you don't already know. The dev's asked this guy JackSpades to release his FFB tweaker settings on their forum, and to tell people how it works. Now, maybe it's just me, but that sounds like even they don't really understand how their system works. Anywho, he gives a pretty detailed description on all the settings and what they do, and gives a link to wheel checker to find your linearity so you can correct for it, but theres also plenty of other people with your wheel that gave settings, so can probably skip that. He then gives out his FFB settings for every car in the game, and all the DLC, and it's actually really good. It really makes me wonder why SMS doesn't just release his files with the game, as well as the wheel settings....
It does bring attention to the point that PCars might not have the most detailed roads, which is really evident on the first hairpin of Cali Highway as you clunk down and around the geometry of the corner.

KartKraft would be good when launched, it is supposed to be released in Q1 and the teasers were absolutly incredible
Q1 when? This year? Because if so they already missed that.

Q1 is not finished, and yes this year

+1. Take some cars for a test drive, then if you like it, get one of the Experience packs. They go on sale on Steam too.

Regarding GAS, I agree that the car feeling isn't really present—they feel like they're made of paper. But it's still an excellent simcade racer, and I really like its career mode and dedication to motorsports.

They got 1 more month, and if they don't have a release down yet I'd expect probably sometime around June. But getting off topic.
