This is unlikely to happen for a while, if at all.
The way the game was built doesn't easily allow for it, and would cause too much complication (I believe).

I was hoping for this as well. Racing with my friends at the same time could be quite intense with headset mics talking. Great times and so many finishes just tenths of seconds apart. You can always chose to opt out so if possible I hope dearly that it comes to this title. Perhaps the finest gem Codemasters has pumped out in long while.

You can still do it through leagues, I know it's not quite the same, but you and your friends could still set up a league and all start at the same time?

An online Rally game with no online rally is a joke the original dirt had just a leaderboard and that was useless. Please give us online rally and online Pikes Peak

Online rally mode point to point with lobby should have been a no brainer. We had it in all Dirt games.  I figured it wud be just like Dirt 1. Simple, we all start at same time and over on left on the race progress bar each driver is represented with a color and their psn name. You can peep over to see where u stand. When done it shows who placed where. And we shud hv championships. Its there with rallycross, why the heck did CM leave it out? This is a MUCH lessor game without it. Just 2nite me and my 5 friends were searching for it and we are mad as heck its not there. Spent $60 for a not finished game.  I knew it was to good to be true. Way to go CM. Muck it up again!

As I said, you can get a pretty similar experience through leagues, which you can either do asynchronous - so you can complete it when you like even when your friends are offline, or you could just set it up and all start at the same time. I know it's not exactly the same, and it's a bit of a hassle, but you are still getting the same result, competing against your friends in a rally.. And you can do the same things with the weekly and monthly challenges

No offence but doing it through the league is not even close to being the same the point of head to head with your friends is you got a chance of catching a friend over taking the friend or being caught Andover  taken by the friend

No offence but knowing your friend is on the same track in the car right behind you is what it's all about this is a game not a real rally

It's made to be as authentic as possible. This is not Dirt 4, this is Dirt Rally. Get used to it, because it will not change. :)

The single player yes it's fantastic I'm not saying it's not but the  multiplayer we should be able to be on the same track at the same time with a friend if you catch them or don't catch them it doesn't matter but you should still be on the same track

But it's not going to happen. This has been explained many times before. I suggest you take a look in the suggestion box section of the forum and do some reading. From what I remember, the current EGO engine just can't do it.

Rally, is point to point against the clock.  Rally doesn't have 'tracks' either

Everything.

In real life, it's a two-minute interval, as I recall it.

The part about starting a few seconds apart, and the fact you keep calling it a 'track'. It's a stage, and rally cars start a stage anything from 30 seconds to 3/4 minutes apart.

Thats right. Starting a few seconds apart is not authentic. In real life the cars are usually minutes apart

You start 3 minutes apart in a WRC event. You will never overtake anyone, except if someone crashes out. The longer stages and improvements in all visual areas are bigger then the improvements in the optimization code. So to have multiple cars on a rally stage is just not possible with this version of the engine. They were however interested in implementing a mode where you could enter a lobby, drive at the same time but not see each other (like DiRT 1) but they chose to improve more important aspects of the game (like the v2 physics we got).
