Alpine Renault. Lovely car, but...

Recommended Posts

it's really planted. It understeers everywhere (normally) and WILL NOT TURN!

Now I know why, when I watched them IRL in the '60s they always appeared with the back out at seemingly impossible angles before the corner and disappeared up the track with gobs of opposite lock.

Somebody more skilled than I will develop a setup that lets them turn easier. Please!

I think it oversteers nicely into every corner, as long as you turn in properly.

The R5 on the other hand... won't even go around hairpins without using the handbrake. Very strange.

OK, so an opposite lock flick before to set it up for the corner?

It pretty much slides by turning in normally for me, it goes wherever I point it at all times. Maybe you need to be a little smoother and more deliberate in your corner approach? Releasing throttle + turn in + push throttle and accelerate through is the best way I can describe my cornering with it - all while following a racing line, sort of.

That's clear. Thank you.

And I'll add, it's on tarmac that I find it hard to turn. On the loose it's not an issue.

On tarmac it want's to understeer.

Had my first go in the Alpine in Monte and noticed that the steering is very light. And it does understeer quite a bit, but if you slow down enough for the corners, it's fine. Did a 3 stage custom championship and beat masters AI by about 50 seconds total. And that was without upgrades. Also didn't have to worry about feathering the throttle or anything like that, because it was slow enough you could give it a boot full even at a hairpin and it still wouldn't spin out and if the back does step out, you have a lot of time to catch it :)

These cars are both rear engined cars so there is lot's of weight over the rear axle. I assume they will share some driving charactheristics with a VW Beetle I competed with once  :)

it does understeer on tarmac quite bad. make sure if you handbrake with it you not on the accelerator same time as it just locks up understeers.

the renault 5 can be a right **** :D

Yeah the R5's handling makes no sense to me. It won't go around hairpins without the use of handbrake.

So it's not just me... Any setup ideas to correct this? Braking bias maybe? Making the car's back loose under braking?

Yes... slower speed entering corners and clear lines to get on throttel as soon as posible
I feel those car a lot fun to drive, I love the tricky ones :#

The R5 Turbo is mid engine, isn't it?

No, the engine sits atop of the rear axle. Just looked it up.

Meaning that it is a mid engine not a rear engine. The rear engine sits before the diff axle.

Well, they share the engine layout with a beetle. The only thing you can expect for sure is rubbishnes. At least Alpine still has some nice handling characteristics, but that Renault is just... blegh.
Will have to come up with some nice MC setup for Alpine, but for 80s I'll be sticking to Cossie and won't touch that Renault at all. Not a fan of Renault anyway and I hate the beetle, so will definitely stay away from that one. Good luck to everyone trying to solve the issue with that car through setup though.

Well I think that the car is not that bad.....but as with most turbo car of the time, you had less handling....but more power for it's weight....basically that car in a straight line is a beast

Yes that's probably true. But still, lot's of weight in the back of the car making it prone to understeer.

Stratos and 037 are also mid engined and nothing like R5T. R5T is like driving 4WD and in some occasions is even more understeer than some 4WDs.

Try doing a 3 point turn in a Clio V6 IRL and you'll understand that the Renault 5 understeer on tight turns, is pretty bang on!

The A110, yes, such a fun little car.  Its the 1st time in a year, that I have enjoyed 60's runs.

Still a shame that it,s the Group A version and not the Group B one though
Sort of, but given that we only had 2 cars in the 80's RWD class vs 5 in Group B, it's pretty clear which class needed the variety boost.

I really like driving the A110, but it has for all practical purposes removed the two other 60s cars from the game. There's no point using the Cooper or Fulvia anymore, except in daily events, as there's no way they can even remotely keep up.

One step forward, two steps back.
