Some advice on assists for a PS4 player please....

Recommended Posts

I'm one of those guys who feels like if I don't turn off all the traction control, abs, stability systems etc.... then I'm not "doing it properly". It was only really since Project Cars came along that I realised this was totally wrong as the game has an awesome feature which lets you choose 'realistic assists'. This option will automatically activate the actual assists present in the real life cars for you. It taught me that most cars are driven with some assists active. It's a cool feature and quickly became my preferred way of driving, so that I could get more of an idea of what these cars might actually feel like and make it that bit more satisfying to do well with them.

So now I'd like to do the same thing with DIRT Rally but I've no idea what I should be turning on and off. I don't want to end up doing loads of research for each vehicle but would like more of a general idea of what assists are usually used in rally cars. I appreciate this this must vary hugely from era to era so it's probably a tricky question to answer. I guess what I'm asking though is what assist settings would you guys use for a 'realistic' drive. I'm assuming for example that most rally cars probably do use ABS and a bit of TCS but that is just my assumption based on the fact that commentators talk about that stuff sometimes.

Any help getting a well rounded set of options for a fairly accurate experience would be much appreciated, thanks.

WRC cars did have ABS and traction control in the 2000s, and back into the '90s though I'm not sure how far back. Those aids were banned in 2011 I think. I couldn't say what cars had what though.

I also have problems with the PS4 gamepad controls... Even on the simplier tracks, i am behind almost 1 minute when i finish! I have a lot of assist settings ON... Should i try disabling them all? Isnt there something I should leave enabled? Please note that I am not a veteran player, but I am better than average.

Im a veteran when it comes to racing games..but every game turns me into a beginner.
I would suggest turning everything off and go from there...if something seems to hard..enable that assist and try again.

Rally should be hard..damn hard and i belive you will be a better driver with assists off.

I'm currently playing with ABS on 3 and everything else off. Using automatic gears with the clutch kick enabled (brilliant idea whoever thought of that by the way), but will switch to manual later on.

I saw that option (clutch kick) but i cant understand tha actual effect it has on gameplay...
If you're struggling mid corner, and you're venturing into understeer territory, you can punch the clutch to up the revs.

Automatic gearboxes in games frequently fail to change down when the car is bogging down. As the @thecraicbear says you can use the clutch kick to quickly get the revs up and get the power down. It's particularly relevant for the big power (i.e. big turbo) cars, as you can get the turbo back on boost again.

It's such a minor thing but, to me, it's something that should have been an option with automatic gearboxes in rally games a long time ago!

I use it often, when bogging down powering out of a tight corner but knowing I'm going to fast for a downshift!

If using a wheel, I'd say no assists. I tried ABS on several settings with the Mini and just couldn't get the driving right. Once I turned it off and just got the hang of the break pedal for a bit, I can't see the point of it. I get more control, feel the car and road better, and feel the differences in setup more accurately. Only 3 rally events so far with the Mini, finished 2nd or 3rd on all of them and am 1st in the championship.

If using a gamepad, I'd say use everything you need!

They had active diffs but I highly doubt they had ABS and TC. Unlike circuit racing, locking and spinning the wheels is integral to manipulating the car's behaviour, especially on a loose surface.
The fancy diffs were banned because of the costs and they made the car's too boring to watch.

I tried with ALL assists OFF and I finished 2nd in my first attempt! Previously I was struggling between places 4,5,6... Thanks for the tips!

I wish I could find more information, but here are a couple quotes from 2011:

Carlos Sainz, on developing the Polo R:
"The new regulations allow a new manufacturer to come and be closer than in the times of the front active diff, centre active diff and rear active diff; the traction control; ABS and all of these things. I remember the last time I drove the Citroen, it was full of electronics and now this has changed."
Christian Loriaux, technical director of Ford WRC:
"Strictly speaking there is not much tech in our 2011 Ford Fiesta compared to the 2004 car. In that season the car had ABS, clutch control, paddle shift, traction control, active differentials, ride height control with GPS, electronic dampers and active suspension."

@Attreyu - firstly, "The Neverending Story" is an awesome book...but I digress.

I'm also a big fan of PCARS. I also have minimal ABS engaged in that game so I can be super-aggressive with my braking. That said, and as several people have commented above, you'll do much better without any of the assists. Once you get the pendulum feeling and how to use your accelerator to steer, you'll start ripping the stages apart. Stick with it...
