After a day with the game (PC)

Recommended Posts

I can honestly say, this is the best rally game I've ever played. Sure it can be frustrating at time (Esp Sweden, I hate that course o.o ) But this has the best physics I've felt in a rally game in ages. Graphics are good on Ultra, FPS stayed solid enough I never noticed anything out of it (Though it's a bit wired the windshield wipers apparently show in 30 FPS?). Its a shame my friend that got the game before me didn't have more patience for it. Because I don't see another Rally gaming topping this any time soon.

I love that the stages are nice and long (Dirt 3's were annoyingly short imo) and even though I hate Sweden, I'm pleased that I don't go flying off into the air like team rocket when I touch the edge of the track. FFB could be better on the CSR, but it only seems 'not that great' on asphalt for some reason? Just finished the opening rounds of my career mode and had a dead tie in points for 2nd lol. A shame I had technical issues during round 2 that forced me to retire. (Something simply wasn't right with the car, don't know if it was a glitch or what, but no amount of restarts fixed it. And no there was no damage car was fresh. But it's been perfectly fine since).

Did need some windshield washers in the final round though lol.

At the end of the day, I do wish there was some more of the older rally cars (Evo 4/5/6/7, matching Subaru's lol) More hill climbs and rally cross tracks. But this is a great start and I hope things continue on this route.

Also, maybe next time you can throw in some rewinds so my friends don't all rage quit lol. Just disallow them at the higher ranks, that should please everyone.

P.S. Thank you for making Fanatec wheels including the CSR work on PS4, that's one of the key reasons I went ahead and bought it now instead of waiting for a steam sale - and I know that might not make sense because I bought it on PC, but it still means quite a bit to me that playing with my friends was an option (had the main one not rage quit lol).

Sweden making me have a bad day :P (By far my best run there lol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIo6vhBtzWk I switched to the RWD car after this, and won Finland. Much better car, wish I'd used it from the start lol.

Yeah, I was hoping for more hillclimb, but much like the rewind, a lot of guys get touchy with it. They like their rally.

I bought it for the ps4 (dont own pc) the physics are incredible you can feel the raw power of the car when pressing full throttle ,the drifting into a corner or 3 ,the tire locking on a corner, the car flipping/crashing from messing up. Great rally game but lacks rally modes in my opinon no 1v1 headon like dirt 3 and not enough rally x tracks even truck rally racing would be cool. Overall though great job on the most realistic rally game in terms of driving and terrain effects. Hope they add alot of tracks and cars

I do wish I could change some of the pace notes lol. I swear some right/left '5' turns are tighter than some 3's lol. I have gone off cliffs because of that. I've learned that 9/10 if he says "caution" before he means "I'm about to tell you the wrong ****" lol.

Ran a fairly decent run at a new (for me) paved course earlier, and it was satisfying lol.

https://youtu.be/taRUnirYWak

I love using the H-pattern but I'll probably have to switch to paddle shifters once I move up to faster cars lol. We'll see though.

But I'm loving the rally focus. I'm so glad no one bought Showdown, so that they realized us rally lovers weren't the vocal minority lol :P And I'm hearing F1 2016 has a really good career mode after 2015 not having one... Codemasters is coming back strong. Just when I'd started losing faith in them lol.

Hopefully they can expand on this, and add more Rally cross, and perhaps get the trucks back in. Without sacrificing the Rally content. The lack of multiplayer options kind of sucks, but I suppose it worked out, since all my friends  except one now, have rage quit lol. He seems to be liking it a lot. At the very least I hope for expanded rally cross in future games, and multiplayer Rally (even if it's only like dirt 1).

Not a perfect game, but definitely the best one yet. I do get pretty irritated at the bad corner calls and want to break things lol :P  but that happens with most games. Luckily I stopped breaking things almost 10 years ago lol.

Ran the benchmark the game has with it, it did 20,263 frames, 98.66 average, 78.20 min, 122.09 max at 1080p ultra settings. With the video recording application I've been using running. I've only noticed one hickup while playing and it was extremely minor.

If this series continues down this path, I plan on purchasing every one lol.

I'd stick with H pattern. Paddle shifters suck in rally. Make your H-pattern a SQ, you'll be way happier. I sometimes give up quit, and I therefore haven't played the game that much, and I switch between a few others. I think some corners might be mislabeled, there's a few corners in greece where he calls a 1 and it's more like a hairpin. Some of the turns also depend on if they're uphill or downhill, as that can make a 3 feel like a 5 or a 5 like a 3.

Breaking things hahah sounds like me at 16 playing games get mad punch objects break hand or materials. Unless your winning money who cares if you lose its just a dumb game and walk away.Glad i smoke weed now and matured a little on the calming down side use to do dumbshit over games.

I actually have a sequential shifter I could use. That isn't a bad idea actually. Will only take a few minutes to shift out. And since I just pulled out of all the leagues I was in on P-cars I only really need my H pattern for Iracing, the little bit that I play it.

Haha, Well, I had extreme anger problems because I was misdiagnosed as a kid and incorrectly medicated. So it took me a little while longer to get my anger under control. Last time I broke a controller was CoD MW2. Which was also my last CoD lol. I still get pissed sometimes and shout at my screen lol. But generally it takes me far more that my older brother to flip out. He cracks me up with how bad he snaps, makes me realize how hilarious I used to look/sound lmao.

It had a positive side to it though. I grew up pretty poor so whatever I broke I had to do without, so I got really good at fixing electronics. I could essentially build a PS2 if you gave me one completely dissembled lol. I never had a 360 or Ps3 open. But I did crack my Ps4 open to clear it of dust while I was trying to sort out my frame loss in Pcars (turned out to be a failing USB device lol).

It also saves me money on controllers because I have the confidence to take them apart. My DS$ joysticks started to wear out so I took the controller apart and rotated them around and switched sides lol. Meanwhile 3 of my friends and my brother bought new controllers because theirs wore out lol.

So, I don't regret my breaking things back then lol. I've really learned to simply turn a game off once I start to feel that rage coming lol. Simplest fix of all time. I keep telling my brother to do the same, but he listens like a rock.

If you have good paddle shifters they are generally quicker to operate then a stick. Technological advancement in motorsport (rally included) doesn't happen for no reason ;) Having said that, I use H-pattern for older cars and sequential stick for newer breed. I don't have time to adapt my racing rig to proper paddle shifters.

But in DiRT H+Clutch is generally faster even on paddle cars because of artificial delay on shifts. Delay is shorter in modern ones so difference isn't huge but in others it's noticeable difference.

DarkRedslayer those videos look good but it seems you are almost driving from the back seat, if you find the buttons for adjusting the seat forward it changes the view to a more realistic FOV and puts the A pillar of the car where you would expect to find it while driving a real car and makes the experience much more immersive?

Well, this is a pic from my real car I just ran outside and took lol probably why I am ok with where it is. http://i.imgur.com/JLLPPli.jpg
Took this while holding the phone right in front of my eyes lol. ----Side note--- From the first vid, I did adjust the seat slightly forward ---

I sit only couple feet from my monitor when I race. But either way. (Screen sits maybe 1 foot (30.48 cm) behind my wheel)

vs
(Slightly pixelated as I took a SS on my phone from one of the vids)

I could probably move it forward a hair, but I'm used too very close to this angle, so I am able to use my mirrors on a single monitor setup, as I've been doing for 20 years lol. I'll actually probably adjust it so the door mirror ends a little close to the edge of the screen. But it's what I'm used too, I've tried other setups and closer to the dash never feels right, unless I just flat switch to the dash or hood view. Which I generally avoid unless a car has a **** interior view lol.

I understand it's habit, but did you watch the video? You can't really compare picture you take with camera from your head position to monitor that sits behind your wheel

Yes and perhaps I'll take my monitor outside and see what it covers lol. But if I can't see my mirrors, it's going to make racing online far worse. And if I change it on Dirt, and get used to it, it's only going to screw me when I go back to Pcars, or whatever else I'm playing. I can understand why others may not like it. But until I start struggling badly against the people I race against, I am not going to screw with it.

I will however try bumping it forward just a bit to where the mirror is near the edge of the screen.

Either way, I do appreciate the tips. Whether I'll use them or not haha :P

All proper racing games have FoV sliders, it's going to be the same with just minor adjustments when you calculate proper FoV and get used to it.
I really recommend you to do that, there's really no downside to it as all of these games have virtual mirror too.

http://www.projectimmersion.com/fov/index.php
Add 0-10 degrees to calculated FoV if you have small monitor, there's no point trying to go too low with just one screen.
DiRT FoV slider is explained in sticky thread here http://forums.codemasters.com/discussion/40012/field-of-view-settings-in-dirt-rally-look-here

And in DiRT you should probably move seat bit forward too.

That first site is pretty neat.

I'll toy with it a bit when I play shortly. No guarantees though :P haha

Yeah of course, but I can guarantee more "proper fov" will help when you get used to it. As EB said, it helps to judge distances when it really matters.

I might actually do a race on Pcars here in a few mins, so maybe I'll play with it on there first, since that's where it'll matter most adjustment wise lol.

I don't like it lol. Dropped FOV down to where that one site suggested for Pcars and I couldn't drive worth a damn. It just threw me off so bad. I tried closer to what I do, but meh. I like what I'm used too, being able to see my mirrors.

I suppose if you feel you're going at your optimal pace for the hours you've put in then you should stick with that.

Personally, I don't faff too much about trying to get a realistic FOV because I only use the 1 monitor. If I wanted a realistic FOV I'd get another 2 monitors, or a bigger single monitor with VR or TrackIR so I could turn the headcam based on where I want to be watching.

Yeah, I'm not messing with it lol.

Also I've determined my most hated course overall. And that would be Wales. It reminds me of Dirt 3, in that the edge of the track makes me feel like I'm playing star fox 64 all over again. "What, you've stuck 1 inch of tire off the edge? Do a barrel roll!" I absolutely hate this place. So much so that I wish I'd bought the game on disc so I could throw it across the room o.o Doesn't help that 90% of the place is a slalom of "6" turns that always have one randomly sharper than the others (Though still apparently a 6), with of course a hill to send you flying into the sky.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd be willing to bet this is the place that made my friend trade the game lol. Tracks with launcher edges have always been my least favorite in any rally game I've ever played. Never could seem to come to terms with a tiny dirt pile being able to send my car 10-15 feet into the air because I touched it with one wheel.

That's pretty much describes the real Welsh stages :P most of them, anyway.
After making annual visits to both the WRC events and national Welsh stages, most sections around the dedicated spectator areas are all slalom style, cambered sections of road, either downhill or uphill, and will break the trend by going into a tighter corner of sorts.

However, the ridged edges of the road in DR have been an annoyance starting from early access, especially with how the cars tend to behave when launched into the air.
It doesn't bother me now, because I'm so used to the Welsh stages that I keep it on the road 90% of the time through muscle memory, but I can understand how frustrating it is for people with fewer hours played.
