Best sounding cars in Dirt Rally?

Recommended Posts

DiRT Rally is by far the best sounding racing game ever made! That's a fact! I love the BMW E30 M3 sound - the onboard sounds in this sim is so realistic it hurts. :)

I would love to see (hear) more TV Broadcast angles in replay tho. With engine sounds at this level, it's a must imo.

Don't forget, even if the sound isn't a genuine recording, it *IS* a recording, so it always bests other games :)
Most games of the last 15 years have a recording of some kind, that alone isn't really note worthy.
Gran Turismo uses recordings for a lot of cars, believe it or not, but you'll not hear many people championing that for it's audio. :P

(one of it's huge problems is that the samples have to accommodate for all the modifications you can do to the car and it's engine, all of which affect the engine audio. So it's basically impossible).
We couldn't really say the Delta S4 recording is a real stand-out, since it lacks that very distinctive super and turbo charged combination which some other games have done better. I doubt Dave would say he's really all that satisfied with some of the placeholders.
You're always so technical ;)

Other studios do not seem to use the recordings the same way Dave works them, so for that i'm eminently impressed, there are some literally terrible sounding car games out there by comparison.  Yes the upgrades etc would make it very hard, but DR seems to have done that part in a good way and gotten away with it, mostly because it's not customisation, rather just regaining full power.

Not sure anyone called out the S4, it's a fine engine sound, but like all the Lancias, it's a placeholder :(

@cjl9A few people, including myself, called out both Quattros.

Are all Lacias place holders? Atleast the Fulvia/Stratos I would have thought were real.

Kinda surprised so few mention the 131. I'd take smaller NA engines over turbos all day long :)

Oh, and I think the gravel spray sound is worth a special mention. Remember when they removed it after a patch? The game lost it's soul :(

It's odd, usually I agree with others when it comes to engine sounds, but... I don't like the M3's sound. Not in the game, I mean in reality. I think it's not a good sounding car. Am I the only one?
No, I'm in agreement with you there! I think pretty much all the BMW M Series cars have a "tinny" noise in real life that I'm not a fan of. Full credit to Codemasters though, as the M3 in game has the same sound!

I'm rather partial to the noise of the DS3 and Fiesta rallycross cars as well, though the Group A Impreza is still king for me!

Didzis did, but more to the point

So don't back up by saying it's just a placeholder now. ;) You literally said even the placeholders were better than anything else.
They are perfectly acceptable, and certainly better than *some* games out there, but the inclusion of the cars sampled to much higher standards does make them stand out like a sore thumb by comparison.
It's caused an undeniable lack of consistency. The sounds of a selection of the cars are simply in a completely different league compared to others and that has to be remembered when thinking of the Total Package.

On a different note, the upgrades thing can't really be compared. Upgrades in DiRT Rally don't seem to affect the sounds, even if they maybe. technically, should. Such as power upgrades
But GT has modifications ranging not just from engine tuning and mapping to fitting multiple different exhausts, and things like that COMPLETELY changes the sound of an engine. With over a thousand cars, most of which can go through that full upgrade process, impossible is the most apt description.

Hmm...interesting...nobody has said the Quattro yet.
Because no one is reckless enough to actually make someone drive it just to listen to it xD That suspension is so bad... but the sound of that I5 engine is magnificent, that's for sure. Which is why the Pikes Peak version has been mentioned few times here, since it has something else that make that sound pop up even more :D

Generally the sound is fantastic, right up there with DriveClub in terms of accuracy and acoustic coverage.

I think someone did mention the PP Quattro, and I agree. Quattro and GpA Impreza are my favourite sounds in the game. IRL, imo the Quattro had the best sound in rally history. I'm not even a fan of it, but that noise... it's fucking evil, straight out of hell.

I'm a Lancia fan, but sadly in the game, 037 and the two Deltas aren't among my favourite sounds. Fulvia and Stratos are great though.

I've always said this, was always amazed how accurately even the more obscure cars in gt were captured. I had a Mitsubishi FTO gpvr many years ago and it was spot on in the game. Perfect V6 'howl' at certain revs and a more aggressive note with the switch in cam profile on the mivec. Damn i loved that car lol.
fully expected the 'headline' cars to have full recordings but placeholders for the lesser ones

Alright, Bry, you called me, i'm really generalising a lot here :)  But i do agree with many of your points.

And i'm completely wrong on my "all Lancia" comment, my apologies, you're right, i pretty much forget the Stratos and the Fulvia are Lancia
To Bry's point again, with the sounds that aren't "perfect" standing out against others, the Intergrale, whilst good, is used (albeit modified) for the R5T and the source is from neither car, the 037 is a good sound but not from that car and the S4, also good, i think is a modified version of the one used by the Intergrale.

They are i believe, both straight samples, the Stratos certainly is, i've seen the car it was sampled from blasting round a track :sunglasses:

The Delta S4 is definitely lacking. The real ones had an evil "pressure cooker hiss" at idle, as the turbo was always vented until the supercharger disengaged at higher rpm's.

It's lacking because the S4 and Integrale are using a placeholder sound.

I miss distinctive supercharger whine for both 037 and S4. It was a trademark of both Lancias, and If it could be added somehow, even to current placeholder sounds, that would already be a noticeable improvement.

We're highly unlikely to get any sound updates for the game now, let alone any other updates to the game bar bug fixes.  The team have moved on to the next project now.

I'm not that fond of how the 01 Focus sounds from inside the cockpit. It feels like you have both the engine and exhaust in the same space as you are. I know it's an old sample though.

In general most cars could have much more transmission whine.

Old sound means old recording quality *AND* technique, it's missing the nuance/split that the game design and other recordings possess.

Possibly me: I mentioned the S1 on the first page of the thread! I'm in full agreement with you with regards to the quattro being the contender for best sounding rally car of all time. The Group A Impreza is a very close second, which is why I'm so pleased to hear both of them so well represented in game!

That fluttering noise isn't a dump valve: it's compressor stall.

It's a rubbish quality video, but this is one of my fave S4 clips with the supercharger whine and "hiss" captured:

As for Gran Turismo: I've long been a fan of the series, but I still can't believe that despite all the effort they put into accurately modelling the cars, no one at Polyphony has realized how much crappy engine sounds completely ruin their hard work!

Yea, it's baffling that despite all their sound recording efforts the cars sound way worse than they do in any phone-recorded Youtube video.
