Best sounding cars in Dirt Rally?

Recommended Posts

Hi lads,

Whats your opinions on the best sounding cars in the game and what cars do you think really nail the real sound if you watch live rallies or drive in them?

If your not a live rally enthusiast what cars in the game do you enjoy the sound of the most? Do you ever chose to drive a particular car just because it sounds so good?

Where would you rate the engine sound and overall sound quality in Dirt Rally compared to the other rallies you've played? i personally think its right up there.

Cheers

There's a lot of variation, mostly down to what could and couldn't be recorded to current standards.

The Group A Impreza 555, for example, is a stand-out car that champions (hehe) @soundfx 's work.
The Ford Focus, well, that's based on much older recordings from the Colin McRae Rally days.
Then some cars like the Lancia Delta S4 are simply the best that could be done with whatever they had.

Today, it seems the Manta is finally getting some love, though who knows if we'll see the fruits of that as an update in DiRT Rally or as something stored away for the future.

EDIT: To be clear - before the hashtags are taken to heart, almost certainly something to be stored away for the future.

Gotta love the M3 and the Fiat 131. Also the Weber equipped Fulvia sounds lovely. The 2007 Focus is also worth a note. That's really spot on.

To me it's not just "right up there", it's by miles the best sounding rally game ever. The only motoring game that can compete is R3E.

The Group A Impreza is a standout car for me: so good to hear that Group A growl in game! The S1 quattro sounds fantastic as well (as does the E2 Pikes Peak car).

Agree, its the benchmark, 'right up there' was an understatement.

I will say that this game sounds amazing through good head phones, ive got a samsung relatively new tv, you cant hear how good this game sounds through it, you miss a lot of fizz and crackles etc, when you put a good set of headphones on, BOOM, its another world.

Honestly, when I started playing career with the Cooper S then winning stage after stage with it, I felt in love with it; I love the twin carbs air sipping noise in it. With those tiny wheels and little power, it handles amazingly as it is quite responsive. In 1960s, it was the best car ever made.

Here is the base engine. You can see those tiny twin carbs there! :)

I like the sounds of Lancia Stratos and Lancia Delta S4 (such a smooth and refined engine note for such a beast), also the chirps of the Fiesta and the howling of Polo and Hyundai

I think all the cars that have been recorded from their real-world counterparts sound noticeably more genuine. There's a few placeholders that are re-used across multiple cars and while the audio engine makes them all sound pretty good and different, you can really hear the detail in the more accurate recordings.

As others have mentioned, the Quattro, Stratos, and 95 Impreza sound fantastic, but don't forget the 306 Maxi. It absolutely screams at the redline, it would not be the same without the authentic recording.

Yes headphones makes it all sound great! Don't forget to put audio mode to Headphones in the audio settings :)

It's brilliant, best sound in any racing game I've played. At some point I dug up Richard Burns Rally again, and it sounds, er, not quite as good.

Don't forget, even if the sound isn't a genuine recording, it *IS* a recording, so it always bests other games :)

Most people have noted some very good ones, the 6R4 and the Stratos are perfect examples are genuine recordings, likewise the Quatro and Alpine.  The Metro really zings along there and the BMW has a cracking 'on-cam' sound to it whilst the 306 is an incredibly unique screamer.

The i20 is a really recent and genuine sample, it's just a shame it has such a crazy story behind it, but i don't know if i'm at liberty to give that background, that's more of a @soundfx thing ;)

Best sounding racing game ever. And not just the engine sounds, but environment sounds too. You can feel what your car is doing through sound, it's something that has never been done before. So many favorites... if I have to pick one it's E30.

It's odd, usually I agree with others when it comes to engine sounds, but... I don't like the M3's sound. Not in the game, I mean in reality. I think it's not a good sounding car. Am I the only one?

Ha, weird, i think it's quite the racy sounding engine IRL too.  I guess i'm just a sucker for cammy engines, like the MKII Escort.

Pikes Peak Quattro has quite simply a mad engine sound. Anyone should take a spin on Pikes Peak just to listen to that monster.

Gotta love that anti-lag! Sounds like a volley of gunfire in the Evo, as it should.  ;)

Most games of the last 15 years have a recording of some kind, that alone isn't really note worthy.
Gran Turismo uses recordings for a lot of cars, believe it or not, but you'll not hear many people championing that for it's audio. :P
http://pitstop.gran-turismo.com/en/article/37
(one of it's huge problems is that the samples have to accommodate for all the modifications you can do to the car and it's engine, all of which affect the engine audio. So it's basically impossible).
We couldn't really say the Delta S4 recording is a real stand-out, since it lacks that very distinctive super and turbo charged combination which some other games have done better. I doubt Dave would say he's really all that satisfied with some of the placeholders.
