How does the DiRT RALLY career work?

Recommended Posts

So I just got the game and first would like to say... ITS AWESOME!!! Second I was wondering how the career worked. I got my car and went to the events. There are about 6 Rally's, 2 Rallycross and a few Hillclimbs. As I go and complete Rally's do I unlock more events in those categories? Can I redo events that were in the past? And when do I unlock FIA World Rallycross? Thanks for your help. (and being smarter then me) :D

The rally championships are not a linear career like in other games. They play out like a competetive season. You start in an entry-level class, and you will run all 6 locations no matter what. If you place in the top three at the end of the season you will be promoted to a harder difficulty for next season, if you place in the bottom three you will be demoted, and if you place middle pack you will remain in the same difficulty for another season. The stages you will race in each location are chosen randomly, so you don't 'unlock' them per se, but the harder difficulties will have a higher number of stages, more long stages, and worse conditions, plus the harder AI of course. It is designed this way to be flexible, so you are not forced to win in order to progress. When you are first starting out, don't expect to win or even be in the top 5, focus on learning the cars and the road surface and try to keep it clean. Don't worry if you crash (you WILL crash a lot), try to learn from your mistakes and you'll improve. Just like real rally  ;)

The rallycross and hillclimb championships also work like seasons, and I believe the FIA WRX box in the menu tells you what difficulty you need to progress to in order to unlock it (I unlocked it a long time ago and don't play RX much so I don't remember exactly). In hillclimb, the easier difficulty events start on the all-tarmac version of Pikes Peak, and the course is split into short sectors. Eventually you will be able to run the full course in one go and race the mixed surface and all-gravel versions. These modes are like mini-games, there's not too much content there and they're good for a quick change of pace, but rally is by far the bulk of the game.

Custom Chamionships let you choose the number of locations, stages per location, and difficulty, but the stages are still chosen randomly. If you go back to the main menu and go to Custom Event, you can control everything and race whatever stage you want with any car for free. It's great for practice or tying out cars before buying them in the career.
