F1 Teams Choose Halo Device 2017 :(

Recommended Posts

So I've been quite against this change... and thought Red Bull's aeroscreen was much better from a viewers perspective. But unfortunately It seems in 2017 there will be an annoying halo style device around the drivers cockpit, that I'm sure will make the cockpit/Tcam cameras very different from a viewers perspective. Then I started thinking about the video games and how annoying it would be driving using the Tcam view or even cockpit with this halo device constantly in your view. Am I the only one who thinks this will make the game less enjoyable than they are with the full open cockpit, the way It's always been.

F1 2016 the game may be the last ever F1 game we see with a full open cockpit and that saddens me greatly. F1 cars are suppose to be sexy, and I think the halo device will look horrible. What does everyone else think, will it affect the visual immersion of cockpit/Tcam in the game or not?. Personally I think it definitely will for me I like seeing the drivers helmet and head bobbing and moving under g-force stress, this device may take most of that away. :(

I hope they give gamers the option to remove the halo device for 2017. They give us the option to remove hands/steering wheels in some games.

I think safety has to take priority over spectators'/gamers' viewing pleasure.

The thing is the sport of F1 is safer than it has ever been, I mean look at the Alonso crash in Australia earlier this year 15-20 years ago he wouldn't have walked away from that, and with a halo device he probably wouldn't have been able to get out of the car.

I guess I'm just a traditionalist, and the open wheel adrenaline and risk aspect kinda gets removed for me with this decision. I mean there are a lot more dangerous sports out there than F1 just look at MotoGP for one example, those bikes are every bit as fast as an F1 car in a straight line and all that protects them is a helmet, leathers and pure skill and balls of steal, that's why people watch, and why they get paid huge amounts of money.

I just think the FIA and some of the drivers these days try and over regulate the sport. I hear Hamilton doesn't want it on his car though. And playing any Licensed F1 game in Tcam view with that thing in your face will not be enjoyable. Hopefully we can mod it out on PC haha.

If the driver in reality (is more important) can drive with Halo, why the players no can?
The game copy reality or reality copy the game?

Given how strict they are with the representation of the cars id be surprised if the option to have or not have the halo would be allowed by ya boy bernie

Isnt all this in reaction to Joules. (RIP) i dont see how this would have saved him. I understand how they are trying to make the sport safer. I feel like they are just trying to make it seem like something is being done. Bare in mind i cant remember the crash and what happened so please feel free to corect me if im wrong

I too don't agree with Halo, is very ugly. But another concept that leave the car beautiful how ever has been. Without talk that F1 2017 will pass by several changes in many areas.

If neither ourselves videogame lovers accept something so ugly, imagine F1 of reality... That's what I mean. If F1 add this Halo and the world accept, then we players also would deserve adding such protection (Halo).

That depends first of all as to whether CM will continue making the F1 games after this year though given the license is up for renewal. But if CM do continue I'm sure they'll find ways around it. It's their job right?

I always thought Indycar would have done the halo thing before F1.  I really don't see the use for it in F1.

Safety is more important than aesthetics. Though I do agree that the halo doesn't look like it would do a lot, certainly compared to the Red Bull design. I'd have gone with the aeroscreen myself but the ones in control know more than I.

I actually thought that Red Bull's aero screen would be a better choice for multiple reasons.

1. It looks better, also reminiscent of the big windscreens F1 cars used to have in the 70s.

2. It seems safer to me. That spring which hit Massa in the head back in 2009 could fit through the gap of the halo, where the aero screen would have deflected it.

3. Better for the drivers vision, don't have a stupid support bar in the middle.

Not sure what they were thinking when they decided to go with the halo crap, there are a lot of flaws with it. Aero-screen just seems much more practical for me.

Though I'd prefer if they didn't go with either of them and left it as it was. Neither design would've saved Jules, and the halo wouldn't have prevented Massa from getting injured. Nobody else got hit in the head recently. It seems like F1 is taking responsibility for IndyCar, weirdly...

After all the proposed changes for next year to make the cars look agressive they went ahead with the halo device. The t cam view looks like a dune buggy and the cockpit view renders I've seen on the net look quite retarded.  The halo device "might" have potential to save a life in the future but it kill the f1 gaming industry..

Interesting how the Halo device stirs up all these discussions about aesthetics, 'cos you know, the cars in 2014 (keyword: dildo collection) looked so good.

I don't like it either, I think the aero screen is the better option, but at least this is to prevent possibly critical injuries to the driver. Therefore I can live with it.

I respect the look for safety regarding the driver. But this is an open cockpit sport since day one. Jules crash was a tragedy which I doubt had bee nprevented with a halo device. It either will not prevent you being hit by small object (Massa) so leave it the way it is. Concerning the ruined view; it is a computer game so removing it from your view would be simple (if the FIA aloows them, which I doubt also)

It is ugly indeed. But if you would of read the news article completelly, you would've noticed, that they chose the halo for 2017 because of they though they wouldn't of had enough time to develop the aero screen to be sturdy/hard enough to withstand hard impacts. They will propably change the halo to the aero screen in 2018. Also, both Vettel and Räikkönen has stated, that it isn't that much of  nuisance and doesn't actually hinder drivers vision at all. And yes. It's still ugly.

The Halo is ugly. From the Driver POV though the binocular effect mean it doesn't really impede their vision. Its no worse than some of the huge aerials they had on the noses of the cars, some of those were freaking huge and did get in the way. Maybe on 2013 there were 2 or 3 cars I would flat out refuse to drive in cockpit mode lol

He spun out and hit the back of a recovery vehicle which was high enough for his var to go under it and gis head got cruched by the back of the revory vehicle and his car.

This is literally the most retarded thing I have ever seen (mind you, I've lived with my sisters :D ) Jules Bianchi's head was crushed under a digger that weighs a sh*t ton and the way cars get annihilated when smashing into barriers at about 100+ k/ph, a pole with a ring around it made out of the exact same material with a huge gap in the middle isn't going to stop someone seriously injuring themselves. It's in the nature of the sport. You may say Jules family is also stupid for taking action against the FIA but they are right because yes there risk involved in the sport. But why in the name of God was there a full on digger on the same rain soaked track as cars going around 300k/ph on a bend where a car just aquaplaned moments before when there was a risk of it happening again ?? They sometimes penalise drivers for parking in unsafe locations. I am done with the FIA now, they are turning into FIFA !

The pictures of his car after the crash alone are enough, it's a miracle that he survived as long as he did.
