See, where I live we do the Baja type stuff. For the most part not as technical (some of those dirt trails can be killer though) but it's a lot cheaper to get into I think. My dads friend owns a sandrail shop where he custom builds them and they're awesome. It's basically a few hundred pounds of steel tubing, and a turbocharged V8 in glorious RWD, and they'll get serious air. And people don't have a problem owning 2-4-5 seaters and taking you along. All in all, yeah, I'd still rather not sit on the sidelines. A ride along I'm all for, but standing on the side doesn't do much for me. It's like watching Nascar, yeah, it's loud, it's fast, it's dangerous, but until someone slams into the wall, it's not very interesting.

SO analogies are lost in the 4th dimension. Just saying if I want to sit somewhere and watch a car go around a corner I could sit in a stadium and bum cheap headache in a can from the 1600 rednecks next to me. I think Nascar's just an excuse to drink cheap beer. Then again, that is basically how it started...

Why in the name of god and all that is holy would anyone want to subject themselves to such extreme torture !? What is this Nascar nonsense that you speak of ?

I am in no doubt that the sound guys do know their stuff so I am confident that great things will happen with a bit of time. I am throwing down a challenge for the sound team to re-create the engine noise reverberation for all cars when in the forest as per the two video's I posted earlier. For those that have not experienced it for real, trust me, when you do, it will haunt you for the rest of your life. I will never forget the 1981 RAC, Keilder forest, 3am, pitch black, totally silent, freezing my cobblers off, just waiting, then it happens, first the cars lights way in the distance, then the noise getting closer and louder, reverberating off the trees and hillsides like a massive internal combustion orchestra,  Mikkola, Vatanen, Arikkala, Brookes, Clark, Waldegaard, Toivonen, McRae, Pond et al in their group 4 chargers blasting by us then howling off into the night. Hairs on the back of the neck stuff, just incredible and truly unforgettable. I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience it and I hope it can be re-created in DR. It will take the enjoyment level for real petrol heads to a whole new level.

First rally I saw  was Burmah 1974, hooked ever since.

Hmm, interesting, but poor sound quality means you don't get the true flavour of the engine noise.

I'm not sure. Combined with the fact that it's also usually really hot. Especially Phoenix international. It was 115F two days ago.

I rarely drive the Escort because it bothers me.

I used to rally Escorts in real life. My last one was an ex-works car I bought from Boreham. LVX 947 J

A Mk I RS1600 with a Terry Hoyle 1860 iron block BDA.

Hi,
I hope you don't mind me commenting, but I currently own & am Restoring LVX 947J, I don't suppose you have any pictures or more information on the specification such as: Rear suspension set-up etc ?
Pictures; of the Interior, In the Boot, Under the Bonnet, whilst you were Rallying etc?
Did it retain it's Yellow & Green colour scheme when you purchased it from Boreham?
Any information you have would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Yes, when I got it it was still painted in the BP yellow and green. Boreham used "funny" paint in those days sao Ron Douglas, of RallyX and bodywork painting fame, turned it blue and white. Like the Haynes of Maidstone car that somebody made a skin for.

No pictures at all. My idiot stepmother, with whom I'd left stuff when I moved to the US, threw it all away. "I didn't think you'd want that. It's just old pictures." I could have killed her.

The axle was the uprated Atlas with a long four-link suspension, mag strengthening plate across the back: the rally cars mostly used short links, but this car was used for ice racing and pace notes on the Monte.

The boot contained both the bag tank which held 20+ gallons, two electric pumps, and the dry-sump oil tank.

The shell was from Maurice Gomm...and had been through the acid tank. If you breathed on it the panels would flex.

I've got much more: flood of memories.

Vertical turret boxes to hold the Bilstein shock absorders. The tunnel was modified at the front to take the (then new) 5-speed ZF gearbox.

Proper firewall front and rear.

It's all coming back to me. Pictures please @Dintman
