Walter Röhrl made me understand the 037

Recommended Posts

In the latest WRC preview for Sardinia Walter Röhrl explained how to drive the 037. In essence. he said treat it like an F1 car, very small and smooth movements. Tried it, and the 037 went from the worst car in the game to the most glorious wonder of a car ever. I could hardly make it go through a stage faster than snail pace, and now I suddenly got top 100 times in Sweden without even pushing it :-)

So for any of you that still finds this car a horror, some tips:
1. Easy on the throttle. And easy off. Hardly ever just stomp down or take the foot off.
2. Keep the revs low. It has insanesauce torque, so there's no real need to keep the revs near the limiter. If you keep the revs down, you can always give it a bit more push by just applying some extra throttle, which you can't if you're already close to max revs.
3. Small movements at all times. Never overdo any of the inputs. Small and smooth wheel movements, smooth changes with the throttle, ease on the brakes.
4. Control before speed. The 037 can always go a little bit faster. Don't let it ;-) If you're smooth with the throttle you can easily find that controlled speed before you go too fast and crasch.

Happy driving!

tighten the differential up and i would see which gearing works for you.

hairpins are basically what you need to practice apart from them its not too bad and a great fun car to drive.

Let me quote form Walter:

"The secret of this specialty lies in braking one second after common sense indicates and accelerate a second before the prevailing logic"

"I limit myself to think that they are trees" (talking about spectators at roadsides xD)

"For me driving starts driving starts when I steer the car with throttle pedal instead of the wheel"

And my favourite:

"In a group B you have to anticipate every move, every reaction that the car shall have; expect to feel what it does, it may be the last thing you feel."

Sorry if its not 100% well translated...

Umm...I think the stress is on "functional."

To be homologated, 200 road legal versions were built and sold. They definitely had handbrakes.

To comply with requirements of different countries' vehicle regulations the 037 would have had a handbrake installed, even if it were not functional, just cosmetic.

To clarify cosmetic, my ex-works Escort had a hydraulic handbrake working on the rear discs. Hydraulic brakes were still considered suspect in England so the Road Traffic Act required handbrakes to be actuated by a cable. So, to comply, my handbrake also had a cable THAT WAS CONNECTED TO NOTHING!

Just put your wheel degree to 270 or 360 or so and your 037 will be easy as peeing standing. That's what the "pro's" use. but imho 900 + softlock for the real deal, of course.
I always do soft lock, and I seriously wouldn't even want lower than 900 for the 037 since that makes it much harder to do the delicate steering movements required.

270 and 360 actually make the 037 harder to drive for me, with other cars it works but the 037 starts to feel very twitchy at low degrees to me.

The 037 is the only remaining car I can't or my life drive in DR (DS4 user here). In time, I'll make it my bitch and obey my every input.
