Advanced Wheel Settings for SRW-S1 Wheel.

Recommended Posts

Hello.
Some of you may have heared about or even own a Simraceway SRW-S1 wheel from SteelSeries. Link below.

I'm one of a "lucky" owners of this wheel but unfortunatly, I dont have a wheel clamp for it or base to attach it to. But I still love racing with it even without force feedback and holding it in my hands.

Overall I'm in love with Codemasters Dirt series, as well as F1 games. And I don't usualy have problems setting up my wheel for any game.
But with Dirt Rally I can't quite, make it work. It is either very twitchy or never responsive. I'm asking you people for help and guidence on how to setup a SRW-S1 Wheel.
And yes I have read this blog post http://blog.codemasters.com/dirt/06/dirt-rally-force-feedback-update/
Thank you for  any tips or assistance.

Wait, how does that work? Does it just track how you're moving, like a Wii controller? My advice would be to sell it and get a proper force-feedback wheel that mounts to your desk. If you enjoy using a wheel like you have, then you'll love a FFB wheel.

BadD0g, i was thinking about it, but unfortunatly my budget is pretty tight at the moment so I cant efford a proper steering wheel. That's why I have this very portable easy to set-up wheel. But yes I'm loking for at least a 360 rotation clamp or something. Thank you for your opinion.

In that case, I can't help you set up what you've got, but for the future you'd definitely love using a hard-mounted wheel. Sadly there's not too many options in the lower price range, if you want good build quality you're looking at at least $300 for a brand new wheel. I assume you're on PC, that at least opens up the options a bit. Keep an eye out for maybe a used Thrustmaster T300, that would probably be your best bang-for-buck option. Logitech wheels are really nicely built but have gear-driven force feedback which might be bothersome to you. I tested a G920 and found it to be too rough and gritty feeling for my taste.

If for whatever reason you really can't get your current wheel working, I can confirm from personal experience that the game plays very well with an Xbox 360 controller, so there's always that as a fallback option.  ;)

Okay. I spend quite some time testing. And there is a way to easy set-up SRW-S1 B) It only took me around 10 min to fully set-up wheel and play.
This is very close to default setup without  too much tweaking inside game. It's comfortable for me, and I hope will work for you. I prefer using my wheel on 180° lock.

  1. First thing I did was just setting the wheel on the flat surface, table or etc. will work just fine. (Just make sure it will be flat and it doesn't lean)
  2. After connecting my wheel to my computer, I went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers and right clicked SRW-S1 under Devices.
  3. After you opened submenu, click Game Controller Settings/Properties/Settings. And you should see two buttons "Reset to default" and "Calibrate...". I highly suggest you to use Reset to default button just to have a clean settings on the wheel driver side. But if you want, you still can calibrate the wheel to your preferences. (Bear in mind that Dirt Rally also has a calibration option, but I believe it doesn't interact with the wheel driver)
  4. After I calibrated my wheel to default settings and launched a game. In game go to "Options & Extras" then "Controls" and select "Choose Preset". In this menu scroll down to Direct Input Devise and using F3 and F4 keys on your keyboard change input to "Steering Wheel". Exit, confirm changes.
  5. After you have assigned Steer Left and Steer Right with your wheel, you should have Advanced Wheel Settings available at the top of  "Options & Extras" menu.
  6. IMPORTANT! Select "Advanced Wheel Settings". In this menu I didn't touch anything accept  "Steering Dead zone"(5-10% either one works for me), "Soft Lock"(OFF) and "Center Steering"(OFF).
  7. Everything else I left at default just to see, how will it work on its own without customizing it too much.
All this took me around 10 min, I play with assists off, accept clutch overdrive. I also suggest handbrake to program button 16, Red "Speed Limiter" button at the top right of the wheel. Allows me to brake, downshift and apply handbrake if needed(hairpins). I hope this will help you to enjoy Dirt Rally. Leave you suggestions and tips. Thank you.
