Wow. So, turns out there's some older guys on here. And we're completely off topic. Love it.
I thought my 31 years was old, but apparently it's nothing. ;)
Damn. I always pictured you like 54 or something. We're the same age! I'm still 20 in my mind though ;)

This is the topic reminiscing and telling old war stories, i truly love this game its easy for me because i am basically retired i have put hours and hours in to get to a point where i am truly competitive,I have a mountain of stories i can tell about events i have done the greats i have met. and its one of the few places i can share some of this stuff.

As a side note for those thinking this has no real value its just a game, i would aggressively disagree.I use every trick in the book i have learnt over 2 decades plus to be competitive.I watched every youtube vid the Pork ever made to see how he was so desperately fast. Each day 2000 plus enter the daily events to be fast its a skill set that in so many ways replicates the real thing. Those that master the skills and set the top times do so in comparison with tens of thousands of others. Its impressive, when i do well on dailys or weeklys, i feel a similar achievement as i did doing the real thing.

When i started you could spend 10k on a group 4 escort and compete with the very best at the highest level, now watching the current British championship the top 20 cars are at least a quarter mill apiece. and most who are there are clueless. In my opinion virtual racing will explode in the near future, because it gives what is the club man a genuine chance to compete at the highest level. Pocket boot racing and rallying has demolished Motorsport, the public know it thats why the viewing both live and on tv has plumeted
i think racing sims rally games could explode soon if the games cater for what is missing currently. many steering wheel manufacturers for eg are pushing at the moment for more e-sport racing games and exposure. which is great. it is a great area and there are some great games.

for them to become e-sport titles and that is basically what needs to happen for them to " explode " they need to cater for the element to take them there.

competitions , leagues , ladders , events, prizes and backing. great anti-cheats which is a massive deal if you want to take it to e-sports and be legit.

i do hope that Dirt Rally looks into this area. it could work very well as long as they work out how to do mp right , sort a anti-cheat that works (currently its a joke) and cater to what would make it exciting to watch and play competitively.

most of the factors are already here in the game. just the few missing points need to be addressed.

Virtual racing will need some kind of hirearchy to give people achievable levels though. From my experience of amateur rallying it was relatively easy to pick up trophies albeit at very lowly class level . I came home with a second in class on my very first event because I was running against other guys who had no experience either!

Sim racing/rallying isn't like that, basically we are all pitched together to compare with the best in the world who (without wishing to inflate their egos!) are the equivalent of the top WRC drivers.

The general answer is to get good but that kind of misses the point IMHO.

You've got me beat. Mentally I'm like a 7 year old. And I still want cookies. To be fair, my Grandpa is like 72... hmm... should probably check that... anyways he says "Thank you" every time he farts, and blames you and says " That's disgusting!" when he burps.

I'd really like to the Porkster behind the wheel of an actual car and see how he does.

Probably not very well considering I can't even afford a drivers license!

I always thought video games were strictly for kids, Dirt seems to buck the trend, I'll be 37 this year!

Oh, so we have established my rallying exploits were before Porkhammer was born and he thought he was old!

For motorsports fans of all ages I think sim racing is a great way of participating rather than watching. For us older members perhaps the convenience and accessibility is even more relevant.

Though my daughter, fresh out of college, got a job in advertising and moved to Lomdon.

Maybe I'll visit her in November.   :)

Can't afford a license? Well, I guess you European types. Here it depends on state, but for me it was like a 10~ish minute multiple choice test, then a parallel park, then a drive around the block. And I think it was $20 to get 3 attempts.
Hahaha, it is.
In Arizona the fee is determined by age, those from 16-39 will pay $25, 40-44 will pay $20, 45-49 pay $15 and residents age 50 and above pay a $10 fee. Out of state licensed drivers can simply trade their license for an Arizona license by paying the fee and taking a vision test.
That's fantastic. I love my state, we basically have zero fcks given, you can do pretty much anything, and anything you can't do is usually cheap to do.

This thread got me thinking, back in the eighties we didn't have the Internet to find stuff out. Here is the Kadett I owned in 1984 in its original glory just before the RAC Rally it competed in back in 1976:

https://www.chevettes.com/forum/download/file.php?id=3&sid=7e3455174717d65b49ffa9627b26c70b

I sold it in 1986 and it was later restored and converted to RHD:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/GT2200/Kadett%20and%20Chevette/Kadett4.jpg

I have never seen either of these images until today!
The worst thing was we where rallying in a period pre digital photos for the most part so memories in picture form tend to be much more limited, i also picked up a couple of photos i hadn't seen before in the last couple of weeks.
I am glad the thread has continued i was on the pop while getting nostalgic the other night so was suffering yesterday.
Heres the recently found pics i only got recently Haspengow rally and Algarve rally both European championship events,The supra was ex-per Eklund and a Gr A Sapphire Cozi i loved that car.
p.s if its you with the tash its a beast :)

The money in the F.P.S GAMES IS ASTRANOMICAL, I believe that sim racing will eventually go the same way as the target audience is older with more disposable income, there definitely  needs to be a league and progression structure with rewards revolving around sim gear, so in the top league we can have a structure where everyone is basically on the same hardware running the same settings so its possible to make it all about the driving.
I think getting sponsors on board would be relatively easy once a decent structure was in place

Have you got any pics of your old gr4, i owned 2 full spec escorts in my time but the ex wife destroyed shit loads of photos and Cups as she was convinced rallying meant more to me than her, guess what she  was not wrong.

When one of my sisters got her license a few years ago it was 30,000 swedish crowns - 3540 USD.
Christ. Did it also take like 6 months?

It's def a process. You have to sign up, book driving lessons with the license school, do a skid pan, pass the theoretic test, do this and that yadayadyada and finally you will probably fail inte the last test coz you didn't fckn signal early enough at some point.

Mine went fairly easy though, maybe spent like 1200USD but that was 17 years ago. It's way more expensive now.

The way i would do it is this, book a holiday, in one of the greek islands or cyprus, some where you have a contact, book a test, get them to book a test and have the paperwork ready for you to get a provisional licence when you land, couple of lessons and a 100 bucks job done plus you get a holiday,
I know money is always a bit tight with you but when you get some this i think is he cheapest way and i am pretty sure they have to recognize intentional foreign licences under eu rules.

It would be a long holiday as you have to live in the country for 6 months before you can take a test there! The European Court clamped down on "licence tourism" some while ago.

My comment was regarding this, sorry if I baffled you a bit Porky.

My point was that one don't need a driving license to be quick behind the wheel of a real car.

I'm quite content with driving a virtual rally/race car though, wouldn't want to do that stuff in real life with all the risks and money involved. I have a woman for that.

;)
