Head cam is... glorious!

Recommended Posts

Sometime about the end of last year I started trying different cameras to see what difference it made, and I ended up using the bonnet cam for how it made it easier to see where the front of the car is. Been playing like that for a while without thinking about it, but a few days ago I moved my screen close to the wheel and went into headcam again. Lowered the FOV to make it closer to real life... and daaaaaaaamn, headcam really is where it's at for immersion. I'd completely forgotten how the in-car sounds, the camera shake and the more limited view makes it feel so much more real. For any of you that has gotten stuck in the bonnet cam, get back to the head cam for a while and once again get that "holy shit" feel! :-)

Never been a headcam user, not a fan of limited visibility. I can see so much more if I'm behind the wheel of a car in real life, so why restrict myself? Nah. Bonnet all the way for me. At least it lets me see.

Dashcam is my choice. It fits well with my setup. Bonnet surely gives me more vision, headcam restricts too much so dashcam is a nice fit in between.

I play in bonnet and i'd use head cam if i had a bigger screen ( i play in a Laptop with 17.3" ), to not limit my visibility, or a 3 screens Setup.

I'd even use dash cam, with the screen i've, instead of bonnet, if we could change FOV in dash cam. Too high for my taste. They seriously need to give players the option to change FOV in dash.

Bonnet cam is hands down the best if you want to set good times, no substitute. I'll go back to bonnet cam in a few weeks myself when I want to go fast again. But until then I'm going to enjoy the feel of being shaked about like a ragdoll when I hear that ominous sound of the dampers bottoming out. And the lovely touch of being pressed down into the seat when the suspension gets to work in Finland.

When you guys say "bonnet cam" do you mean the view that puts you centered on the hood?
So left and right hand drive cars are the same and you don't see the wipers when it rains?
Are you allowed to use that view in online events?

Headcam or dash for me on 3 screen setup, Headcam in VR. :)

You can modify camera.xml to allow this or get a mod from RaceDepartment.

I thought you couldn't afford a driving licence and that your missus drives you around the town ;)

As soon as I got the game I disabled exterior cameras and stuck with head cam. I always use in-car views anyways, so free credit bonus! The audio alone is worth it for me. Being able to see the interior details is really nice, too; some cars have really neat details like hand-written labels and that sort of thing that makes it feel more like a real, used rally car.  The dash view is good to have if you want that option, but the FOV is adjustment doesn't seem to work in that view for some reason.

I moved to headcam too. It is a bit harder to get the same times but it is much more immersive! I'm loving it!

It depends on your screen location. And maybe monitors. I'm stuck with single monitor so I use hood or dash. With them triples tho.... It's fantastic.

All this, plus I have the HUD turned off and I want to see the gear and shift indicator. I like the dashcam too, but can't use it without the HUD.

I drive in dashcam all the time. It's the best compromise between the two.
Once I get a VR I will switch to headcam, but that is still some time off

good for you, dytut. Since beginning ive been using dashcam and it really got even with the mod that makes the fov slider also adjust the fov for dashcam. That way im able to absolutely judge correct distances in front of me and also see plenty enough of the road infront of me.

bonnet with its huge fov increases mistakes, and you feel like you are driving way faster than you really are. realistic fov is just all around better option.

I've really been trying to use the correct FOV but with a single monitor it a no go for me. The sense of speed is non existant and I'm just allover the place as it feels like slightest turn on the wheel is exagerated.

We're on the same page @bogani
I've also recently switched to headcam even though I'm driving on a single 21" desktop.
The dashcam requires me to drive with the HUD enabled - I simply don't like it since some time ago. I decided to switch to headcam and always modify the driver's seat so the gear-indicator is also inside my wheel before the monitor. It works really well. Second reason for this is that I no longer go hotlapping and I'm searching for more immersion and nice-fun giving drive instead of sweet on forehead and 250 HeartRate.

I tend to switch it around. Some days I'll use head cam, some dash cam and if I'm feeling lazy and just want to have a blast, bonnet cam. It really depends on my mood and how much effort I feel like putting in.

Did a league tonight in the RS200, and I remember the reason I went for bonnet cam. I had a real hard time getting to grips with the right side drivers position. Kept bumping into things with the left side :-)

on my PC, with triple screens, head cam is great.

however, on a single monitor, using head cam is way too unrealistic so i use bonnet cam.
